शहर की एक छोटी-सी चाय की दुकान पर रोज़ की तरह ग्राहकों की भीड़ लगी हुई थी। दुकान के कोने में एक आठ-दस साल की दुबली-पतली बच्ची फुर्ती से काम कर रही थी। उसके एक हाथ में चाय के गिलास होते और दूसरे हाथ में अपने छोटे भाई की चिंता।
अचानक दुकान के मालिक ने आवाज़ लगाई, "अरे छुटकी! ज़रा देख तो, तेरा भाई फिर रो रहा है।"
छुटकी तुरंत सब काम छोड़कर भागी और अपने छोटे भाई को गोद में उठा लिया। थोड़ी देर बाद वह उसे चुप कराकर फिर काम में लग गई।
यह सब देखकर एक ग्राहक हैरान था। उसने सेठ से कहा, "भाई साहब, मैं कई दिनों से देख रहा हूँ। यह बच्ची कभी गिलास तोड़ देती है, कभी चाय गिरा देती है, लेकिन आप इसे डाँटते तक नहीं। आखिर बात क्या है?"
सेठ मुस्कुराया और बोला, "इस बच्ची की कहानी सुनोगे तो तुम्हारी आँखें भी नम हो जाएँगी।"
फिर उसने बताना शुरू किया।
"कुछ महीने पहले यह बच्ची अपने छोटे भाई को गोद में लिए मेरी दुकान पर आई थी। उसके कपड़े फटे हुए थे, लेकिन आँखों में आत्मसम्मान और हिम्मत चमक रही थी। उसने मुझसे कहा—'सेठ जी, मुझे काम चाहिए। मैं भीख नहीं माँगना चाहती। मेरे छोटे भाई को भीख माँगना नहीं सिखाना चाहती। मैं मेहनत करूँगी, बस मुझे और मेरे भाई को दो वक्त का खाना मिल जाए। जब मेरा भाई रोएगा, तब मुझे पहले उसे संभालने देना।'"
मैंने पूछा, "और पैसे?"
वह बोली, "अगर काम सीख गई तो जो उचित लगे दे देना। मेरा सपना है कि मेरा भाई पढ़-लिखकर बड़ा आदमी बने।"
उसकी बातें सुनकर मैं कुछ पल के लिए चुप रह गया। इतनी छोटी उम्र, लेकिन सोच कितनी बड़ी!
सेठ आगे बोला, "उस दिन मैंने समझ लिया कि यह बच्ची गरीब जरूर है, लेकिन इसकी सोच बहुत अमीर है। यह गलती से गिलास तोड़ सकती है, लेकिन कभी किसी का विश्वास नहीं तोड़ेगी।"
इतने में छुटकी फिर दौड़ती हुई आई और बोली, "सेठ जी, भाई फिर रो रहा है।"
सेठ हँसते हुए बोला, "जा बेटा, पहले अपने भाई को संभाल।"
उस दिन ग्राहक ने महसूस किया कि महानता उम्र से नहीं, विचारों और कर्मों से होती है। जिस उम्र में बच्चे खिलौनों से खेलते हैं, उस उम्र में छुटकी अपने भाई के भविष्य के सपने बुन रही थी।

A small tea shop in the city was bustling with customers, just as it was every day. In a corner of the shop, a slender girl of about eight or ten was working briskly. In one hand, she held tea glasses, while the other was occupied with the care of her little brother.
Suddenly, the shop owner called out, "Hey, Chhutki! Just look—your brother is crying again."
Chhutki immediately dropped everything and ran to pick up her little brother. After a short while, having soothed him, she returned to her work.
Watching this, a customer was amazed. He said to the owner, "Brother, I’ve been observing this for days. Sometimes this girl breaks a glass, sometimes she spills the tea, yet you never even scold her. What is the story behind this?"

Hearing her words, I was left speechless for a moment. Such a young age, yet such a grand vision!
The owner continued, "That day, I realized that while this girl is poor, her mindset is incredibly rich. She might break a glass by mistake, but she will never break anyone's trust."
Just then, Chhutki came running back and said, "Sir, my brother is crying again." The merchant smiled and said, "Go, child; take care of your brother first."
The customer was watching all this; respect shone in his eyes. He remarked, "Truly, this girl may be young in age, but she possesses a great sense of responsibility."
That day, the customer realized that greatness is defined not by age, but by one's thoughts and actions. At an age when children play with toys, the little girl was weaving dreams for her brother's future.
**Lesson**
No matter how difficult life's circumstances may be, one should never abandon the path of self-respect, hard work, and responsibility.
