कुबेर ने क्यों बरसाया सोना? जानिए महाराज रघु की कथा | Why Kubera Showered Gold on Maharaja Raghu

“महाराज रघु का दान”

महाराज रघु अयोध्या के सम्राट् थे। वे भगवान् श्रीराम के प्रपितामह (परदादा) थे। उनके नाम से ही उनके वंश के क्षत्रिय रघुवंशी कहे जाते हैं।

 एक बार महाराज रघु ने एक बड़ा भारी यज्ञ किया। जब यज्ञ पूरा हो गया तब महाराज ने ब्राह्मणों तथा दीन-दुःखियों को अपना सब धन दान कर दिया। महाराज इतने बड़े दानी थे कि उन्होंने अपने आभूषण, सुन्दर वस्त्र और सब बर्तन तक दान कर दिये। महाराज के पास साधारण वस्त्र रह गया। वे मिट्टी के बर्तनों से काम चलाने लगे।

यज्ञ में जब महाराज रघु सर्वस्व दान कर चुके, तब उनके पास वरतन्तु ऋषि के शिष्य कौत्स नाम के एक ब्राह्मण कुमार आये। महाराज ने उनको प्रणाम किया, आसन पर बैठाया और मिट्टी के गडुवे से उनके पैर धोये। स्वागत-सत्कार हो जाने पर महाराज ने पूछा–‘आप मेरे पास कैसे पधारे हैं ? मैं क्या सेवा करूँ ?’

कौत्स ने बताया कि उनका अध्ययन पूरा हो गया है। अपने गुरुदेव के आश्रम से घर जाने से पहले गुरुदेव से उन्होंने गुरुदक्षिणा माँगने की प्रार्थना की। गुरुदेव ने बड़े स्नेह से कहा–‘बेटा! तूने यहाँ रहकर जो मेरी सेवा की है, उससे मैं बहुत प्रसन्न हूँ। मेरी गुरुदक्षिणा तो हो गयी। तू संकोच मत कर प्रसन्नता से घर जा।’ लेकिन कौत्स ने जब गुरुदक्षिणा देने का हठ कर लिया तब गुरुदेव को कुछ क्रोध आ गया। वे बोले–‘तूने मुझसे चौदह विद्याएँ पढ़ी हैं, अतः प्रत्येक विद्या के लिये एक करोड़ सोने की मोहरें लाकर दे।’ गुरुदक्षिणा के लिये चौदह करोड़ सोने की मोहरें लेने कौत्स अयोध्या आये थे।’

 महाराज ने कौत्स की बात सुनकर कहा–‘जैसे आपने यहाँ तक आने की कृपा की है, वैसे ही मुझ पर थोड़ी-सी कृपा और करें। तीन दिन तक आप मेरी अग्निशाला में ठहरें। रघु के यहाँ से एक ब्राह्मण कुमार निराश लौट जाय, यह तो बड़े दुःख एवं कलंक की बात होगी। मैं तीन दिन में आपकी गुरुदक्षिणा का कोई-न-कोई प्रबन्ध अवश्य कर दूँगा।’

कौत्स ने अयोध्या में रुकना स्वीकार कर लिया। महाराज ने अपने मन्त्री को बुलाकर कहा–‘यज्ञ में सभी सामन्त नरेश कर दे चुके हैं। उनसे दुबारा कर लेना न्याय नहीं है। लेकिन कुबेरजी ने मुझे कभी कर नहीं दिया। वे देवता हैं तो क्या हुआ, कैलास पर रहते हैं। इसलिये पृथ्वी के चक्रवर्ती सम्राट् को उन्हें कर देना चाहिये। मेरे सब अस्त्र-शस्त्र मेरे रथ में रखवा दो। मैं कल सबेरे कुबेर पर चढ़ाई करूँगा। आज रात को मैं उसी रथ में सोऊँगा। जब तक ब्राह्मण कुमार को गुरुदक्षिणा न मिले, मैं राजमहल में पैर नहीं रख सकता।’

 कौत्स ने कहा–‘मुझे तो गुरुदक्षिणा के लिये चौदह करोड़ मोहरें चाहिये। उससे अधिक एक मोहर भी मैं नहीं लूँगा।’

 महाराज ने कहा–‘लेकिन यह धन आपके लिये आया है। ब्राह्मण का धन हम अपने यहाँ नहीं रख सकते। आपको ही यह सब लेना पड़ेगा।’

कौत्स ने बड़ी दृढ़ता से कहा–‘महाराज ! मैं ब्राह्मण हूँ। धन का मुझे करना क्या है। आप इसका चाहे जो करें, मैं तो एक मोहर अधिक नहीं लूँगा।’ कौत्स चौदह करोड़ मोहरें लेकर चले गये। शेष मोहरें महाराज रघु ने दूसरे ब्राह्मणों को दान कर दीं।

“The Great Charity of King Raghu”

King Raghu was the Emperor of Ayodhya. He was the great-grandfather of Lord Shri Ram. It is from his name that the Kshatriyas of his lineage are known as *Raghuvanshis*.

Once, King Raghu performed a grand *Yajna* (sacrificial ritual). Upon its completion, the King donated all his wealth to Brahmins and the destitute. He was so immensely charitable that he gave away even his ornaments, fine garments, and all his vessels. He was left with only simple clothing and began using earthen vessels for his daily needs.

After King Raghu had given away everything in charity, a young Brahmin named Kautsa—a disciple of the sage Varatantu—arrived to see him. The King bowed to him, offered him a seat, and washed his feet using an earthen pitcher. After the formalities of welcome and hospitality were concluded, the King asked, "What brings you here? How may I serve you?"

Kautsa replied, "O King! I had come for a specific purpose, but since you have already donated everything you possessed, I do not wish to place a man of such immense generosity and noble spirit in an awkward position." King Raghu humbly pleaded, "Please, at least tell me the purpose of your visit."

Kautsa explained that his studies had concluded. Before returning home from his Guru's ashram, he had asked his teacher to accept *Guru-dakshina* (a traditional offering of gratitude to the teacher). His Guru had said with great affection, "My son! I am deeply pleased with the service you rendered while staying here. That service itself constitutes my *Guru-dakshina*. Do not hesitate; go home happily." However, when Kautsa insisted on offering *Guru-dakshina*, his Guru became somewhat angry. He said, "You have studied fourteen branches of knowledge under me; therefore, bring and give me ten million gold coins for each branch of learning." Kautsa had come to Ayodhya to obtain these one hundred and forty million gold coins as *Guru-dakshina* (teacher's fee).

Upon hearing Kautsa's request, the King said, "Just as you have graciously traveled all this way, please extend a little more kindness to me. Stay in my sacrificial fire chamber for three days. It would be a matter of great sorrow and disgrace if a young Brahmin were to return disappointed from Raghu's abode. I will certainly make arrangements for your *Guru-dakshina* within these three days."

Kautsa agreed to stay in Ayodhya. The King summoned his minister and said, "All the vassal kings have already paid their tribute for the *Yajna* (sacrifice); it would be unjust to demand tribute from them again. However, Kubera has never paid tribute to me. What if he is a deity? He resides on Mount Kailash; therefore, he ought to pay tribute to the *Chakravarti Samrat* (Universal Emperor) of the earth. Have all my weapons placed in my chariot. Tomorrow morning, I shall march against Kubera. Tonight, I will sleep in that very chariot. Until the young Brahmin receives his *Guru-dakshina*, I cannot set foot inside the royal palace."

That night, King Raghu slept in the chariot. However, early the next morning, his treasurer came running to him and said, "Your Majesty! The treasury is filled to the brim with gold coins. He had the coins piled up and said to Kautsa, "Please take this wealth!"

Kautsa replied, "I require one hundred and forty million coins for the *Guru-dakshina*." "I will not accept even a single gold coin more than that."

The King said, "But this wealth is meant for you. We cannot keep a Brahmin's wealth for ourselves; you must accept it all."

Kautsa stated firmly, "Your Majesty! I am a Brahmin; what use do I have for wealth? Do whatever you wish with it, but I will not take a single coin more." Kautsa departed with fourteen crore gold coins. King Raghu donated the remaining coins to other Brahmins.
