बहुत समय पहले पहाड़ों से घिरे एक छोटे से गाँव में महतो नाम का एक युवक रहता था। उसका घर पहाड़ की ऊँची चोटी पर था। वह बहुत गरीब था और जंगल से फल, कंद-मूल तथा अन्य खाने-पीने की चीजें इकट्ठी करके अपना जीवन बिताता था। महतो मेहनती तो था, लेकिन उसमें एक बहुत बड़ी कमी थी—वह हर काम जल्दबाजी में करता था। बिना सोचे-समझे काम करना उसकी आदत थी। कई बार उसे अपनी गलतियों का नुकसान भी उठाना पड़ता, फिर भी वह अपनी आदत नहीं बदलता था।
एक दिन रात के समय महतो जंगल में एक झरने के पास बैठा बाँसुरी बजा रहा था। चारों ओर चाँदनी फैली हुई थी और वातावरण बड़ा मनोहर लग रहा था। तभी उसकी नजर एक अद्भुत हाथी पर पड़ी। वह हाथी साधारण नहीं था। उसके शरीर पर सोने और रत्नों से जड़े बहुमूल्य आभूषण चमक रहे थे। महतो आश्चर्य से उसे देखने लगा। थोड़ी ही देर में वह हाथी आकाश में उड़ने लगा।
महतो ने अपने बुजुर्गों से स्वर्ग के राजा इंद्र और उनके दिव्य हाथी ऐरावत के बारे में सुन रखा था। उसने तुरंत पहचान लिया कि यह अवश्य इंद्र का हाथी ऐरावत होगा। उस दिन तो वह केवल उसे उड़ते हुए देखता रह गया, लेकिन उसके मन में स्वर्ग देखने की इच्छा जाग उठी।
अगली रात महतो फिर उसी स्थान पर पहुँच गया। वह ऐरावत के आने की प्रतीक्षा करने लगा। कुछ देर बाद हाथी फिर दिखाई दिया। इस बार महतो ने निश्चय कर लिया कि वह स्वर्ग जाकर ही रहेगा। जैसे ही ऐरावत उड़ने लगा, महतो दौड़कर उसकी पूँछ पकड़कर लटक गया। दिव्य हाथी उसे लेकर स्वर्गलोक पहुँच गया।
स्वर्ग की शोभा देखकर महतो की आँखें खुली की खुली रह गईं। वहाँ चारों ओर हरियाली थी। वृक्ष मीठे फलों से लदे हुए थे। दूध की नदियाँ बह रही थीं और हवा में फूलों की सुगंध फैली हुई थी। सुंदर महल चमक रहे थे और स्वादिष्ट पकवानों से भरे थाल रखे थे। महतो ने जी भरकर घूम-फिरकर स्वर्ग का आनंद लिया। उसने स्वादिष्ट भोजन किया और कुछ देर पेड़ की छाया में विश्राम भी किया।
लेकिन उसे डर था कि कहीं कोई उसे देख न ले। इसलिए रात होते ही वह फिर ऐरावत की पूँछ पकड़कर पृथ्वी पर लौट आया। घर पहुँचकर उसने अपनी माँ को सारी बात बताई। पहले तो माँ ने उसकी बात पर विश्वास नहीं किया, लेकिन जब महतो ने कसम खाई, तब उसे विश्वास हो गया। माँ ने समझाते हुए कहा, “बेटा, यह बात किसी को मत बताना। लोग तुम्हें पागल समझेंगे।”
लेकिन महतो से बात छिपाए न छिपी। अगले ही दिन वह गाँव के मुखिया के पास पहुँचा और गर्व से बोला, “मैं स्वर्ग देखकर आया हूँ।” मुखिया को उसकी बात पर विश्वास नहीं हुआ। जब महतो ने उसे भी स्वर्ग ले चलने का वचन दिया, तो मुखिया तैयार हो गया। यह बात घर में फैली तो मुखिया की पत्नी, माता-पिता, बच्चे और रिश्तेदार भी साथ चलने की जिद करने लगे।
महतो की माँ ने उसे बहुत समझाया कि किसी को साथ मत ले जाना, लेकिन उसने एक न सुनी। अगली रात सभी लोग ऐरावत के आने की प्रतीक्षा करने लगे। जैसे ही हाथी उड़ने लगा, महतो ने उसकी पूँछ पकड़ ली। मुखिया ने महतो को पकड़ लिया और पीछे-पीछे बाकी लोगों ने एक-दूसरे को पकड़ लिया। वे सब आकाश में लटकते हुए ऊपर जाने लगे।
रास्ते में घबराकर मुखिया ने पूछा, “क्या स्वर्ग हमारी पृथ्वी से बड़ा है?” महतो बोला, “हाँ, बहुत बड़ा है।” मुखिया ने फिर पूछा, “कितना बड़ा?” महतो ने समझाने के लिए दोनों हाथ फैलाकर कहा, “इतना बड़ा!”
जैसे ही उसने हाथ छोड़े, वह नीचे गिरने लगा। उसके साथ बाकी सभी लोग भी पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़े और उनकी मृत्यु हो गई। ऐरावत तो स्वर्ग पहुँच गया, लेकिन उनकी मूर्खता ने उनका अंत कर दिया।

Long ago, in a small village surrounded by mountains, there lived a young man named Mahto.
His house was located on the highest peak of the mountain. He was very poor and earned his living by gathering fruits, roots, tubers, and other edible items from the forest. Although Mahto was hardworking, he had one major flaw—he did everything in a hurry. Acting without thinking had become his habit. Many times, he suffered because of his mistakes, yet he never changed his ways.
One night, Mahto was sitting near a waterfall in the forest, playing his flute. The moonlight bathed the surroundings, creating a beautiful and peaceful atmosphere. Suddenly, his eyes fell upon a magnificent elephant. It was no ordinary elephant. Its body was adorned with priceless ornaments made of gold and precious gems. Mahto watched it in amazement. A few moments later, the elephant rose into the sky and began to fly.
Mahto had often heard stories from his elders about Lord Indra, the king of heaven, and his divine elephant Airavata. He immediately realized that this must be Indra's celestial elephant. That night, he could only watch it fly away, but from that moment, a strong desire to see heaven was born in his heart.
The following night, Mahto returned to the same place and waited eagerly for Airavata. After some time, the elephant appeared again. This time, Mahto had made up his mind that he would visit heaven. As soon as Airavata took flight, he ran forward, grabbed its tail, and hung on tightly. The divine elephant carried him all the way to heaven.
The beauty of heaven left Mahto speechless. Everywhere he looked, there was lush greenery. Trees were laden with delicious fruits, rivers of milk flowed through the land, and the air was filled with the fragrance of flowers. Magnificent palaces sparkled in every direction, and platters overflowing with delicious food were placed everywhere. Mahto wandered around joyfully, savoring the heavenly sights. He enjoyed the delicious meals and later rested peacefully under the shade of a tree.
However, he feared that someone might discover him. So, when night fell, he once again held onto Airavata's tail and returned safely to Earth.
When he reached home, he excitedly told his mother everything that had happened. At first, she refused to believe him. But after Mahto swore that he was telling the truth, she finally accepted his story. She advised him, "Son, don't tell anyone about this. People will think you've lost your mind."
But Mahto could not keep the secret. The very next day, he went to the village chief and proudly declared, "I have been to heaven!" The chief did not believe him. When Mahto promised to take him there, the chief agreed. Soon, the news spread throughout the chief's family. His wife, parents, children, and relatives all insisted on going along.
Mahto's mother repeatedly warned him not to take anyone with him, but he ignored her advice.
The next night, everyone gathered and waited for Airavata to appear. As soon as the divine elephant began to fly, Mahto grabbed its tail. The village chief held onto Mahto, while the others formed a chain by holding onto one another. Soon, they were all hanging in the sky as Airavata carried them upward.
During the journey, the frightened chief asked, "Is heaven bigger than our Earth?"
Mahto replied, "Yes, much bigger."
The chief then asked, "How big is it?"
Trying to explain, Mahto stretched out both of his hands and said, "This big!"
The moment he let go of Airavata's tail, he began to fall. Everyone holding onto him also lost their grip and plummeted toward the Earth. They all died in the fall. Airavata safely returned to heaven, but their foolishness and carelessness brought about their tragic end.
Moral of the Story:
Never associate with a foolish or reckless person, because one careless mistake can put everyone around them in danger.
