एक भिखारी एक दिन सुबह अपने घर के बाहर निकला। त्यौहार का दिन है। आज गाँव में बहुत भिक्षा मिलने की संभावना है। वो अपनी झोली में थोड़े से चावल दाने डाल कर, बाहर आया।
चावल के दाने उसने डाल लिये हैं अपनी झोली में, क्योंकि झोली अगर भरी दिखाई पड़े तो देने वाले को आसानी होती है, उसे लगता है कि किसी और ने भी दिया है। सूरज निकलने के करीब है। रास्ता सोया है। अभी लोग जाग ही रहे हैं।
मार्ग पर आते ही सामने से राजा का रथ आता हुआ नजर आता है। भिखारी सोचता है–‘आज राजा से अच्छी भीख मिल जायेगी।’ राजा का रथ उसके पास ही आकर रूक जाता है।
उसने सोचा–‘धन्य हैं मेरा भाग्य ! आज तक कभी राजा से भिक्षा नहीं माँग पाया, क्योंकि द्वारपाल बाहर से ही लौटा देते हैं। आज राजा स्वयं ही मेरे सामने आकर रूक गया है।’
भिखारी ये सोच ही रहा होता है अचानक राजा उसके सामने एक याचक की भाँति खड़ा होकर उससे भिक्षा देने की मांग करने लगता है।
राजा कहता है–‘आज देश पर बहुत बड़ा संकट आया हुआ है, ज्योतिषियों ने कहा है इस संकट से उबरने के लिए यदि मैं अपना सब कुछ त्याग कर एक याचक की भाँति भिक्षा ग्रहण करके लाऊँगा तभी इसका उपाय सम्भव है।
तुम आज मुझे पहले आदमी मिले हो इसलिए मैं तुमसे भिक्षा मांग रहा हूँ। यदि तुमने मना कर दिया तो देश का संकट टल नहीं पायेगा इसलिए तुम मुझे भिक्षा में कुछ भी दे दो।’ भिखारी तो सारा जीवन माँगता ही आया था कभी देने के लिए उसका हाथ उठा ही नहीं था।
भिखारी सोच में पड़ गया–‘ये आज कैसा समय आ गया है, एक भिखारी से भिक्षा माँगी जा रही है, और मना भी नहीं कर सकता।’
बड़ी मुशकिल से एक चावल का दाना निकाल कर उसने राजा को दिया। राजा वही एक चावल का दाना ले खुश होकर आगे भिक्षा लेने चला गया।
सबने उस राजा को बढ़-बढ़कर भिक्षा दी। परन्तु भिखारी को चावल के दाने के जाने का भी गम सताने लगा।
जैसे-तैसे शाम को वह घर आया। भिखारी की पत्नी ने भिखारी की झोली पलटी तो उसमें उसे भीख के अन्दर एक सोने का चावल का दाना भी नजर आया।
भिखारी की पत्नी ने उसे जब उस सोने के दाने के बारे में बताया तो वो भिखारी छाती पीट के रोने लगा। जब उसकी पत्नी ने रोने का कारण पूछा तो उसने सारी बात उसे बताई।
उसकी पत्नी ने कहा–‘तुम्हें पता नहीं, कि जो दान हम देते हैं, वही हमारे लिए स्वर्ण है। जो हम इकट्ठा कर लेते हैं, वो सदा के लिए मिट्टी का हो जाता है।’
उस दिन से उस भिखारी ने भिक्षा माँगनी छोड़ दी, और मेहनत करके अपना तथा परिवार का भरण-पोषण करने लगा। जिसने सदा दूसरों के आगे हाथ फैलाकर भीख माँगी थी अब खुले हाथ से दान-पुण्य करने लगा।
इस कथा का सार यही है–जिस इन्सान की प्रवृति देने की होती है उसे कभी किसी चीज की कमी नहीं होती और जो हमेशा लेने की नियत रखता है उसका कभी पूरा नहीं पड़ता।

The Beggar and the Golden Grain of Rice
One morning, a beggar stepped out of his house. It was a festival day, and he expected to receive plenty of alms in the village. Before leaving, he placed a few grains of rice into his begging bag. He did this because a bag that already looked partially filled made it easier for people to donate—they assumed that others had already given something.
As soon as the beggar reached the road, he saw the king's chariot approaching. He thought to himself, "Today I will surely receive generous alms from the king." To his surprise, the king's chariot stopped right in front of him.
The beggar felt overjoyed. "How fortunate I am! I have never been able to ask the king for alms because the palace guards always turned me away. Today, the king himself has come before me."
But just as he was thinking this, something unexpected happened.
The king stepped down from his chariot and stood before the beggar like a humble petitioner. Folding his hands, he asked the beggar for alms.
The king said, "A great calamity has befallen our kingdom. The royal astrologers have advised that the only way to overcome this crisis is if I renounce everything and collect alms like a common beggar. You are the first person I have met today, so I ask you to give me something. If you refuse, the kingdom's misfortune cannot be averted."
The beggar had spent his entire life asking from others. Never before had he been in a position to give anything.
He was confused. "What strange fate is this? A beggar is being asked to give alms! And I cannot even refuse."
After much hesitation, he reluctantly took out a single grain of rice from his bag and gave it to the king.
The king happily accepted that one grain of rice and continued on his way to seek alms from others.
Throughout the day, people generously donated to the king. But the beggar couldn't stop thinking about the grain of rice he had given away. Even that single grain felt like a great loss to him.
By evening, he returned home. His wife emptied his begging bag, and to their astonishment, she found a single grain of golden rice among the day's alms.
She excitedly showed it to her husband.
The beggar immediately began beating his chest and crying.
Alarmed, his wife asked, "Why are you crying instead of celebrating?"
He told her everything that had happened with the king.
His wife gently replied,
"Don't you understand? Whatever we give in charity returns to us as gold. Whatever we selfishly keep for ourselves eventually turns into mere dust."
Those words transformed the beggar's life.
From that day onward, he stopped begging. Instead, he began working hard to support himself and his family. The man who had always stretched out his hands to receive from others now opened his hands to give in charity.
Slowly, his fortunes changed. The people who once avoided him now respected and welcomed him. Instead of being known as a beggar, he became known as a generous and kind-hearted man.
Moral of the Story
A person who develops the habit of giving never truly lacks anything in life. But one who is always focused on taking can never find lasting satisfaction or abundance.
