रावण के बारे में कौन नहीं जनता,
उसकी वीरता सर्व-विख्यात थी। उसे सप्तसिंघुपति कहा जाता था क्यूंकि उसने सातों महाद्वीपों पर विजय पायी यही। उसे परमपिता ब्रम्हा का वरदान प्राप्त था और उसपर महारुद्र की विशेष कृपा थी। यही कारण था कि उससे युद्ध करने का कोई साहस नहीं करता था। यही नहीं, उसने समस्त देवताओं पर विजय पायी थी और नवग्रह उसके वश में थे। सभी ग्रह उसकी इच्छा से चलते थे इसीलिए वो अपनी मृत्यु का योग बदल सकता था। शनि को उसने अपने दरबार में अपने पैरों के नीचे रखता था।
इतने प्रतापी और वीर असुर की मृत्यु अवश्य ही अत्यंत कठिन थी इसी कारण प्रकृति ने उसके लिए कोई और उपाय सोचा। रावण को अपने जीवन में कई ऐसे श्राप मिले जो आगे चलकर उसकी मृत्यु का कारण बनें, किन्तु ६ श्रापों का विशेष रूप से वर्णन है:
1. इक्षवाकु कुल में एक श्रीराम के एक पूर्वज अनरण्य हुए। उस समय रावण युवा था और विश्व विजय के अभियान पर निकला था। उसी दौरान उसका सामना अनरण्य से हुआ। उन्होंने रावण को रोकने की बड़ी कोशिश की किन्तु अंततः रावण से पराजित हुए। रावण ने उनका वध कर दिया किन्तु मरते-मरते उन्होंने रावण को श्राप दिया कि उनके ही वंश में जन्मा एक व्यक्ति उसका वध करेगा। उनका श्राप सत्य हुआ और आगे चल कर श्रीराम ने रावण का वध किया।
2. एक बार रावण महादेव से मिलने कैलाश गया। उस समय महादेव समाधि में लीन थे इसीलिए नंदी ने रावण को आगे जाने से रोक दिया। इसपर उसने नंदी को देखकर उनके स्वरूप की हंसी उड़ाई और उन्हें वानर के समान मुख वाला कहा। तब नंदी ने रावण को श्राप दिया कि वानरों के कारण ही तेरा सर्वनाश होगा। आगे चलकर सुग्रीव की वानर सेना ने श्रीराम की सहायता की जिससे रावण का सर्वनाश हुआ।
3. वैजयंतपुर के सम्राट दैत्यराज शंभर माया के पति थे। माया मय दानव की पुत्री और रावण की पत्नी मंदोदरी की बड़ी बहन थी। एक बार रावण वैजयंतपुर दैत्यराज शंभर के यहां गया। वहाँ वो माया के रूप पर मोहित हो गया और माया भी रावण के रूप पर मोहित हो गयी और दोनों के बीच सम्बन्ध बन गए। जब शंभर को इसकी सूचना मिली तो उसने रावण को को बंदी बना लिया। उसी समय शंभर पर राजा दशरथ ने आक्रमण कर दिया और उस युद्ध में शंभर की मृत्यु हो गई। जब माया सती होने लगी तो रावण ने उसे रोकना चाहा पर माया ने उसे श्राप दिया कि तुमने वासनायुक्त मेरा सतित्व भंग करने का प्रयास किया इसलिए मेरे पति की मृत्यु हो गई। अत: तुम भी स्त्री की वासना के कारण मारे जाओगे।
4..एक बार भ्रमण करते हुए रावण की दृष्टि वेदवती नाम की एक स्त्री पर पड़ी जो भगवान विष्णु को पति के रूप में पाने के लिए तप कर रही थी। रावण ने उससे प्रणय याचना की किन्तु वेदवती ने खुले तौर पर मना कर दिया। इसपर रावण ने उसके केश पकडे और घसीटे हुए बलपूर्वक अपने साथ ले जाने लगा। इसपर उस तपस्विनी ने उसी क्षण अपनी देह त्याग दी और रावण को श्राप दिया कि एक स्त्री के कारण ही तेरी मृत्यु होगी। कहा जाता है वेदवती ही अगले जन्म में सीता के रूप में जन्मी थी जिस कारण रावण का सर्वनाश हुआ।
5.रावण ने इंद्र पर आक्रमण किया और स्वर्गलोक पहुँचा। वहाँ उसे रम्भा नमक अप्सरा दिखाई दी। अपनी वासना पूरी करने के लिए रावण ने उसे पकड़ लिया। तब उस अप्सरा ने कहा कि आप मुझे इस तरह से स्पर्श न करें क्यूँकि मैं आपके बड़े भाई कुबेर के बेटे नलकुबेर के लिए आरक्षित हूं अतः मैं आपकी पुत्रवधू के समान हूं किन्तु रावण नहीं माना और उसने रंभा से दुराचार किया। यह बात जब नलकुबेर को पता चली तो उसने रावण को श्राप दिया कि आज के बाद रावण बिना किसी स्त्री की इच्छा के उसको स्पर्श करेगा तो रावण का मस्तक सौ टुकड़ों में बंट जाएंगे। यही कारण था कि सीता का अपहरण करने के बाद भी रावण ने उसे स्पर्श नहीं किया।
6. रावण की बहन सूर्पनखा ने रावण की इच्छा के विरूद्ध एक दैत्य विद्युत्जिह्व से विवाह कर लिया। वो कालकेय दैत्यों का सम्राट था। रावण जब विश्वयुद्ध पर निकला तो कालकेय से उसका युद्ध हुआ और उस युद्ध में रावण ने विद्युत्जिह्व का वध कर दिया। जब सूर्पनखा उसके साथ सती होने तो रावण ने उसे रोक दिया और बलपूर्वक लंका ले आया। बाद में उसे समझा-बुझा कर खर-दूषण के साथ दंडकारण्य का राज्य दे दिया। तब शूर्पणखा ने मन ही मन रावण को श्राप दिया कि मेरे ही कारण तेरा सर्वनाश होगा। कहा जाता है कि सूर्पनखा दंडकारण्य में जान-बूझ कर राम-लक्षमण से उलझी ताकि रावण का सर्वनाश हो सके।

Who doesn't know about Ravana?
His bravery was legendary. He was known as the Lord of the Seven Continents because he had conquered all seven continents. He was blessed by Lord Brahma and enjoyed the special grace of Lord Shiva (Maharudra). Because of his immense power, no one dared challenge him in battle.
Not only had he defeated all the gods, but even the Navagrahas (Nine Planets) were under his control. The planets moved according to his will, allowing him to alter the destiny of his own death. It is even said that he kept Lord Shani (Saturn) beneath his feet in his royal court.
Such a mighty and invincible demon could not be defeated easily. Therefore, destiny had another plan for him. Throughout his life, Ravana received several curses that eventually led to his downfall. Among them, six curses are especially significant.
1. The Curse of King Anaranya
King Anaranya, an ancestor of Lord Rama from the Ikshvaku dynasty, once confronted the young Ravana during his campaign to conquer the world. Although Anaranya fought bravely, he was ultimately defeated and killed.
As he lay dying, King Anaranya cursed Ravana:
"A descendant of my lineage will one day kill you."
This curse came true when Lord Rama, a descendant of Anaranya, slew Ravana in the Ramayana.
2. Nandi's Curse
Once, Ravana visited Mount Kailash to meet Lord Shiva. Shiva was deep in meditation, so Nandi, Shiva's divine attendant, stopped Ravana from entering.
Ravana mocked Nandi's appearance, laughing at his monkey-like face.
"Your destruction will come at the hands of monkeys."
This curse was fulfilled when Sugriva's Vanara (monkey) army joined Lord Rama and played a crucial role in Ravana's defeat.
3. The Curse of Maya
During a visit to Vaijayantapura, Ravana became infatuated with Maya, the wife of demon king Shambara. Maya was the elder sister of Mandodari, Ravana's wife.
Maya also became attracted to Ravana, and the two entered into an illicit relationship.
When Shambara discovered this, he imprisoned Ravana. Soon afterward, King Dasharatha attacked Shambara, who was killed in battle.
As Maya prepared to commit Sati, Ravana tried to stop her. She cursed him:
"Because of your lust, my husband died. Likewise, you too shall perish because of your desire for a woman."
This prophecy came true when Ravana's obsession with Sita led to his destruction.
4. Vedavati's Curse
During his travels, Ravana encountered Vedavati, a devoted ascetic performing severe penance to obtain Lord Vishnu as her husband.
Ravana proposed marriage, but she firmly refused.
Enraged, Ravana grabbed her by the hair and tried to abduct her by force.
Vedavati immediately gave up her life and cursed him:
"A woman shall be the cause of your death."
According to tradition, Vedavati was later reborn as Sita, whose abduction ultimately brought about Ravana's downfall.
5. Nalakubera's Curse
After conquering Indra, Ravana reached heaven, where he saw the celestial nymph Rambha.
Driven by lust, he seized her.
Rambha pleaded:
"Please do not touch me. I am promised to Nalakubera, the son of your elder brother Kubera. I am like your daughter-in-law."
Ravana ignored her plea and violated her.
When Nalakubera learned of the incident, he cursed Ravana:
"From this day onward, if you touch any woman against her will, your head will shatter into a hundred pieces."
This curse explains why, even after abducting Sita, Ravana never physically violated or touched her without her consent.
6. Surpanakha's Curse
Ravana's sister Surpanakha married the demon king Vidyutjihva against Ravana's wishes.
Later, during Ravana's campaign of conquest, he fought Vidyutjihva in battle and killed him.
When Surpanakha tried to commit Sati, Ravana forcibly stopped her and brought her back to Lanka.
Later, he gave her the kingdom of Dandakaranya, ruled alongside Khara and Dushana.
Deeply hurt, Surpanakha silently cursed Ravana:
"Because of me, your destruction will come."
It is believed that Surpanakha deliberately provoked Rama and Lakshmana in Dandakaranya, setting in motion the chain of events that ultimately led to Ravana's death.
Conclusion
Despite possessing immense power, divine blessings, and control over the gods and planets, Ravana could not escape the consequences of his actions. His arrogance, pride, and lust invited a series of curses that eventually fulfilled destiny.
The story reminds us that no amount of power can protect a person from the consequences of adharma (unrighteous actions), and that arrogance ultimately leads to downfall
