केदारनाथ धाम की महिमा निराली है, जहाँ महादेव 'शिव' से 'शरणदाता' बन जाते हैं। यह कथा एक ऐसे भोले भक्त की है, जिसने अपनी अटूट निष्ठा से महादेव को समय की धारा बदलने पर मजबूर कर दिया था।
केदारनाथ का वह अनन्य भक्त: एक वृद्ध की अंतिम इच्छा
उस समय आज जैसी सुविधाएँ नहीं थीं। बूढ़ा भक्त लाठी टेकते हुए, कांपते पैरों से ऊँचे पर्वतों की चढ़ाई चढ़ने लगा। महीनों की पैदल यात्रा के बाद, जब वह मंदिर के करीब पहुँचा, तो कपाट बंद होने का समय आ गया था।
शाम का समय था, बर्फबारी शुरू हो चुकी थी। मंदिर के मुख्य पुजारी ने अंतिम आरती के बाद कपाट पर ताला लगा दिया।
पुजारी का आदेश: "वृद्ध! अब सर्दियाँ शुरू हो गई हैं। आज से छह महीने के लिए मंदिर के कपाट बंद रहेंगे। अब यहाँ कोई नहीं रुक सकता, तुम वापस नीचे चले जाओ।"
भक्त की पुकार: "महाराज, मैं बहुत दूर से आया हूँ। मेरी आँखों ने बस बाबा को देखने का स्वप्न बुना है। कृपया एक बार द्वार खोल दें!"
पुजारी ने नियमों का हवाला देकर मना कर दिया और सभी लोग नीचे चले गए। वृद्ध वहीं बर्फ के बीच, मंदिर की सीढ़ियों पर बैठ गया।
वह 'अघोरी' और जादुई रात
भक्त रोते-रोते शिव को पुकारने लगा, "प्रभु! क्या मैं इतना पापी हूँ कि आपके द्वार तक आकर भी दर्शन न पा सका?"
तभी वहां एक अघोरी साधु आया। उसने वृद्ध को जल दिया, आग जलाई और कहा, "घबराओ मत बाबा, अभी तो सुबह होने ही वाली है। थोड़ी देर सो जाओ, फिर मंदिर खुल जाएगा।"
वृद्ध की आँख लग गई। कुछ ही पलों बाद जब उसकी नींद खुली, तो उसने देखा कि सूरज की पहली किरणें मंदिर पर पड़ रही हैं। नीचे से वही पुजारी अपनी टोली के साथ शंख बजाते हुए आ रहे थे।
छः महीने या एक रात?
वृद्ध दौड़कर पुजारी के चरणों में गिर गया और बोला, "महाराज! आपका धन्यवाद कि आपने सुबह होते ही दर्शन के लिए द्वार खोल दिए।"
पुजारी स्तब्ध रह गए। उन्होंने पूछा, "कैसी सुबह? हम तो पूरे छह महीने बाद आज मंदिर के कपाट खोलने आए हैं! तुम इन छह महीनों की कड़ाके की ठंड और बर्फ में जीवित कैसे रहे?"
चमत्कार: जब पुजारी ने मंदिर का ताला खोला, तो अंदर का दृश्य देख सबकी आँखें फटी रह गई। छह महीने पहले जो दीया (अखंड ज्योति) पुजारी जलाकर गए थे, वह आज भी वैसे ही प्रज्वलित था और शिवलिंग पर चढ़ाए गए फूल वैसे ही ताजे थे।
कथा का सार
महादेव ने अपने भक्त की तड़प देखी और उसके लिए छह महीने के समय को मात्र एक रात में समेट दिया। वह अघोरी स्वयं बाबा केदार थे, जो अपने भक्त को ठंड से बचाने के लिए पहरा दे रहे थे।

The Devoted Pilgrim of Kedarnath: An Old Man's Final Wish
Centuries ago, there lived an elderly man who was a devoted worshipper of Lord Shiva. He had only one dream—to have the darshan (divine sight) of Baba Kedarnath before his life came to an end.
In those days, there were no roads, helicopters, or modern facilities. Leaning on a walking stick and with trembling legs, the old devotee began his difficult journey through the towering Himalayan mountains. After months of walking, he finally reached the temple—but just as he arrived, it was time for the temple doors to close for the winter.
Snow had already begun to fall. After the final evening prayer, the chief priest locked the temple doors.
The priest said,
"Old man, winter has begun. From today, the temple will remain closed for the next six months. No one can stay here. You must return to the valley."
With folded hands, the devotee pleaded,
"Maharaj, I have traveled from far away. My only wish is to see Baba Kedarnath just once. Please open the doors one last time."
Bound by the temple traditions, the priest refused. Everyone left, and the old man remained alone, sitting on the temple steps in the freezing snow.
The Aghori and the Mysterious Night
The devotee wept and prayed,
"Lord, am I such a sinner that I reached Your doorstep yet could not have Your darshan?"
Just then, an Aghori ascetic appeared. He gave the old man some water, lit a fire, and said,
"Do not worry, Baba. Morning is almost here. Get some sleep, and the temple will open."
The old man fell asleep.
When he awoke, the first rays of the sun were shining on the temple. He saw the same priest approaching with a group of devotees, blowing conch shells and preparing to open the temple.
Six Months... or Just One Night?
The old man ran to the priest and gratefully said,
"Thank you, Maharaj, for opening the temple so early this morning."
The priest stared at him in disbelief.
"What morning?" he asked. "We have come today to reopen the temple after six long months. How did you survive the freezing winter and heavy snowfall all this time?"
The old man was stunned.
"Six months? I slept here only last evening. An Aghori stayed with me throughout the night and protected me from the cold."
The Miracle
When the priest unlocked the temple, everyone was astonished.
The eternal lamp (Akhand Jyoti) that had been lit six months earlier was still burning brightly. The flowers offered to the Shiva Lingam before the temple was closed were still fresh, as though they had just been placed there.
No one could explain the miracle.
The Divine Truth
The priests and devotees realized what had truly happened.
Lord Mahadev, moved by His devotee's pure love and unwavering faith, had compressed six months into a single night for him.
The mysterious Aghori was none other than Baba Kedarnath Himself, who had stayed beside His devotee all night, protecting him from the bitter Himalayan cold.
The Moral of the Story
