महर्षि दुर्वासा के पीछे क्यों पड़ गया सुदर्शन चक्र? | Why Was the Sudarshan Chakra Chasing Sage Durvasa?

प्राचीन समय की बात है। राजा नाभाग के अंबरीष नामक एक प्रतापी पुत्र थे। वे बड़े बीर, बुद्धिमान व तपस्वी राजा थे।
वे जानते थे कि जिस धन-वैभव के लोभ में पड़कर प्राणी घोर नरक में जाते हैं वह कुछ ही दिनों का सुख है, इसलिए उनका मन सदैव भगवत भक्ति व दीनों की सेवा में लगा रहता था।
एक बार अंबरीष ने अपनी पत्नी के साथ द्वादशी प्रधान एकादशी व्रत करने का निश्चय किया। उन्होंने भगवान विष्णु का पूजन किया और ब्राह्मणों को अन्न-धन का भरपूर दान दिया।
तभी वहाँ दुर्वासा ऋषि का आगमन हो गया। वे परम तपस्वी व अलौकिक शक्तियों से युक्त थे किंतु क्रोधी स्वभाव के कारण उनकी सेवा-सुश्रुसा में विशेष सावधानी अपेक्षित थी।
अंबरीष ने उनका स्वागत किया और उन्हें श्रेष्ठ आसन पर बिठाया। तत्पश्चात् दुर्वासा ऋषि की पूजा करके उसने प्रेमपूर्वक भोजन ग्रहण करने का आग्रह किया। दुर्वासा ऋषि ने उनका आग्रह स्वीकार कर लिया।
किंतु भोजन से पूर्व नित्य कर्मों से निवृत्त होने के लिये वे यमुना नदी के तट पर चले गये। वे परब्रह्म का ध्यान कर यमुना के जल में स्नान करने लगे।
इधर द्वादशी केवल कुछ ही क्षण शेष रह गयी थी। स्वयं को धर्मसंकट में देख राजा अम्बरीष ब्राह्मणों से परामर्श करते हुए बोले..
“मान्यवरों ! ब्राह्मण को बिना भोजन करवाए स्वयं खा लेना और द्वादशी रहते भोजन न करना – दोनो ही मनुष्य को पाप का भागी बनाते हैं। इसलिये इस समय आप मुझे ऐसा उपाय बताएँ, जिससे कि मैं पाप का भागी न बन सकूँ।”
ब्राह्मण बोले – “राजन ! शास्त्रों मे कहा गया है कि पानी भोजन करने के समान है भी और समान नहीं भी है। इसलिये इस समय आप जल पी कर द्वादशी का नियम पूर्ण कीजिये।” यह सुनकर अंबरीष ने जल पी लिया और दुर्वासा ऋषि की प्रतीक्षा करने लगे।
जब दुर्वासा ऋषि लौटे तो उन्होंने तपोबल से जान लिया कि अंबरीष भोजन कर चुके हैं। अत: वे क्रोधित हो उठे और कटु स्वर में बोले..
“दुष्ट अंबरीष ! तू धन के मद में चूर होकर स्वयं को बहुत बड़ा मानता है। तूने मेरा तिरस्कार किया है। मुझे भोजन का निमंत्रण दिया लेकिन मुझसे पहले स्वयं भोजन कर लिया। अब देख मैं तुझे तेरी दुष्टता का दंड देता हूँ।”
क्रोधित दुर्वासा ने अपनी एक जटा उखाड़ी और अंबरीष को मारने के लिए एक भयंकर और विकराल कृत्या उत्पन्न की। कृत्या तलवार लेकर अंबरीष की ओर बढ़ी किंतु वे बिना विचलित हुए मन ही मन भगवान विष्णु का स्मरण करते रहे।
जैसे ही कृत्या ने उनके ऊपर आक्रमण करना चाहा; अंबरीष का रक्षक सुदर्शन चक्र सक्रिय हो गया और पल भर में उसने कृत्या को जलाकर भस्म कर दिया।
जब दुर्वासा ऋषि ने देखा कि कि चक्र तेजी से उन्हीं की ओर बढ़ रहा है तो वे भयभीत हो गये।
अपने प्राणों की रक्षा के लिए वे आकाश, पाताल,पृथ्वी,समुद्र, पर्वत, वन आदि अनेक स्थानों पर शरण लेने गये किंतु सुदर्शन चक्र ने उनका पीछा नहीं छोड़ा। घबराकर उन्होंने ब्रह्मा जी से रक्षा की गुहार लगायी।
ब्रह्मा जी प्रकट हुए किंतु असमर्थ होकर बोले, “वत्स, भगवान विष्णु द्वारा बनाये गये नियमों से मैं बँधा हुआ हूँ। प्रजापति, इंद्र, सूर्य आदि सभी देवगण भी इन नियमों का उल्लंघन नहीं कर सकते।
हम नारायण की आज्ञा के अनुसार ही सृष्टि के प्राणियों का कल्याण करते हैं। इस प्रकार भगवान विष्णु के भक्त के शत्रु की रक्षा करना हमारे वश में नहीं है।”
ब्रह्माजी की बातों से निराश होकर दुर्वासा ऋषि भगवान शंकर की शरण में गये। पूरा वृत्तांत सुनने के बाद महादेव जी ने उन्हें समझाया...
“ऋषिवर ! यह सुदर्शन चक्र भगवान विष्णु का शस्त्र है जो उनके भक्तजन की रक्षा करता है। इसका तेज सभी के लिए असहनीय है। अतः उचित होगा कि आप स्वयं भगवान विष्णु की शरण में जाएँ। केवल वे ही इस दिव्य शस्त्र से आपकी रक्षा कर सकते हैं और आपका मंगल हो सकता है।”
वहाँ से भी निराश होकर दुर्वासा ऋषि भगवान विष्णु की शरण में पहुँचे और उनके चरणों में सिर नवाकर दया की गुहार लगायी। आर्त स्वर में दुर्वासा बोले..
“भगवन मैं आपका अपराधी हूँ। आपके प्रभाव से अनभिज्ञ होकर मैंने आपके परम भक्त राजा अंबरीष को मारने का प्रयास किया। हे दयानिधि, कृपा करके मेरी इस धृष्टता को क्षमा कर मेरे प्राणों की रक्षा कीजिए।”
भगवान नारायण ने दुर्वासा ऋषि को उठाया और समझाया, “मुनिवर ! मैं सर्वदा भक्तों के अधीन हूँ। मेरे सीधे-सादे भक्तों ने अपने प्रेमपाश में मुझे बाँध रखा है। भक्तों का एकमात्र आश्रय मैं ही हूँ। अतः मैं स्वयं अपने व देवी लक्ष्मी से भी बढ़कर अपने भक्तों को चाहता हूँ।
जो भक्त अपने बंधु-बांधव और समस्त भोग-विलास त्यागकर मेरी शरण में आ गये हैं उन्हें किसी प्रकार छोड़ने का विचार मैं कदापि नहीं कर सकता।
यदि आप इस विपत्ति से बचना चाहते हैं तो मेरे परम भक्त अंबरीष के पास ही जाइए। उसके प्रसन्न होने पर आपकी कठिनाई अवश्य दूर हो जाएगी।”
नारायण की सलाह पाकर दुर्वासा अंबरीष के पास पहुँचे और अपने अपराध के लिए क्षमा माँगने लगे।
परम तपस्वी महर्षि दुर्वासा की यह दुर्दशा देखकर अंबरीष को अत्यंत दुख हुआ। उन्होंने सुदर्शन चक्र की स्तुति की और प्रार्थना पूर्वक आग्रह किया कि वह अब लौट जाय। उनकी स्तुति से प्रसन्न होकर सुदर्शन चक्र ने अपनी दिशा बदल ली और दुर्वासा ऋषि को भयमुक्त कर दिया।
जबसे दुर्वासा ऋषि वहाँ से गये थे तबसे राजा अम्बरीष ने भोजन ग्रहण नहीं किया था। वे ऋषि को भोजन कराने की प्रतीक्षा करते रहे।
उनके लौटकर आ जाने व भयमुक्त हो जाने के बाद अम्बरीष ने सबसे पहले उन्हें आदर पूर्वक बैठाकर उनकी विधि सहित पूजा की और प्रेम पूर्वक भोजन कराया।
राजा के इस व्यवहार से ऋषि दुर्वासा अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए और उन्हें अनेकशः आशीर्वाद देकर वहाँ से विदा हुए।

The Story of King Ambarisha and Sage Durvasa
In ancient times, King Nabhaga had a glorious son named Ambarisha. He was a brave, wise, and deeply spiritual king.
King Ambarisha understood that the wealth and luxuries for which people often committed sinful acts were only temporary. Therefore, he devoted his life to the worship of Lord Vishnu and to serving the poor and the needy.
After his coronation, King Ambarisha performed many sacred sacrifices (Yajnas) and worshipped Lord Vishnu with complete devotion. Pleased by his unwavering faith, Lord Vishnu appointed His divine Sudarshana Chakra to protect the king.
One day, King Ambarisha and his queen observed the sacred Ekadashi fast, which was to be concluded on Dwadashi. After offering prayers to Lord Vishnu, the king donated generous amounts of food and wealth to the Brahmins.
At that very moment, the great sage Durvasa arrived. He was an extraordinary ascetic blessed with immense spiritual powers, but he was also well known for his quick temper. Serving him required great care and respect.
King Ambarisha welcomed the sage with honor, offered him a comfortable seat, worshipped him, and humbly invited him to dine.
Sage Durvasa accepted the invitation but first went to the banks of the Yamuna River to complete his daily rituals and meditate upon the Supreme Lord. Immersed in deep meditation, he remained there for a long time.
Meanwhile, only a few moments of Dwadashi remained. King Ambarisha found himself in a difficult dilemma.
He said to the Brahmins,
"Respected scholars, if I eat before serving my honored guest, I will commit a sin. But if I fail to break my fast before Dwadashi ends, I will also violate the sacred vow. Please advise me."
The Brahmins replied,
"The scriptures state that drinking water is considered both equivalent to eating and not equivalent to eating. Therefore, you may sip water to complete your fast without violating the rules."
Following their advice, King Ambarisha sipped a little water and patiently waited for Sage Durvasa to return.
When Sage Durvasa came back, he immediately realized through his spiritual powers that the king had already broken his fast. Believing that the king had eaten before serving him, he became furious.
"You wicked Ambarisha!" the sage thundered.
"Blinded by pride and wealth, you have insulted me! You invited me for a meal, yet you chose to eat before your guest. Now you shall suffer the consequences."
In his anger, Sage Durvasa plucked a lock of hair from his head and created a terrifying demoness named Kritya to kill the king.
The fierce demoness rushed toward King Ambarisha with a drawn sword.
Yet the king remained calm and unwavering, silently remembering Lord Vishnu.
The moment Kritya attacked, the divine Sudarshana Chakra appeared. Within seconds, it burned the demoness to ashes.
Then, to Durvasa's horror, the Sudarshana Chakra turned toward him.
Terrified, the sage fled across the heavens, the earth, the oceans, mountains, forests, and even the netherworld, but the divine discus continued to pursue him relentlessly.
Desperate, Durvasa sought refuge with Lord Brahma.
Brahma replied,
"My child, I am bound by the divine laws established by Lord Vishnu. Neither I nor Indra, Surya, nor any other celestial being can oppose His will. We are unable to protect one who has offended a true devotee of the Lord."
Disappointed, Sage Durvasa then approached Lord Shiva.
After hearing everything, Lord Shiva said,
"O great sage, the Sudarshana Chakra is the divine weapon of Lord Vishnu. It exists solely to protect His devotees, and none can withstand its power. Your only hope is to seek refuge at the feet of Lord Vishnu Himself."
With no other option left, Durvasa approached Lord Vishnu, bowed before Him, and pleaded for mercy.
"O Lord," he cried,
"I have committed a grave offense. Ignorant of Your divine glory, I attempted to harm Your devoted servant, King Ambarisha. Please forgive me and save my life."
Lord Vishnu gently raised the sage and said,
"O Sage, I am forever bound by the love of My devotees. They have captured My heart with their devotion. They are dearer to Me than even My own self and Goddess Lakshmi.
Those who have surrendered everything to Me can never be abandoned by Me.
If you truly wish to be freed from this danger, you must seek forgiveness from My devoted servant, King Ambarisha. Only when he forgives you will your troubles come to an end."
Following the Lord's advice, Sage Durvasa immediately returned to King Ambarisha and sincerely begged for forgiveness.
Seeing the great sage in such distress, King Ambarisha felt deep compassion.
He offered heartfelt prayers to the Sudarshana Chakra, requesting it to withdraw.
Remarkably, from the moment Durvasa had left until his return, King Ambarisha had not eaten anything. He had patiently waited all that time for the sage so that he could first serve him a proper meal.
Once Durvasa was safe, the king respectfully welcomed him, worshipped him according to tradition, and lovingly served him food.
Deeply moved by the king's humility, patience, and devotion, Sage Durvasa blessed him abundantly before departing.
Moral of the Story:
True devotion is always protected by God. Humility, forgiveness, patience, and unwavering faith are greater than anger and pride. One who sincerely serves God and treats others with respect is never abandoned by the Divine.
