आपने सोमरस के विषय में पढ़ा या सुना होगा। अधिकतर लोग ये समझते हैं कि सोमरस का अर्थ मदिरा या शराब होता है जो कि बिलकुल गलत है। कई लोगों का ये भी मानना है कि अमृत का ही दूसरा नाम सोमरस है। ऐसा लोग इस लिए भी सोचते हैं क्यूंकि हमारे विभिन्न ग्रंथों में कई जगह देवताओं को सोमरस का पान करते हुए दर्शाया गया है। आम तौर पर देवता अमृत पान करते हैं और इसी कारण लोग सोमरस को अमृत समझ लेते हैं जो कि गलत है।
अब प्रश्न ये है कि सोमरस आखिरकार है क्या?
सोमरस के विषय में ऋग्वेद में विस्तार से लिखा गया है। ऋग्वेद में वर्णित है कि "ये निचोड़ा हुआ दुग्ध मिश्रित सोमरस देवराज इंद्र को प्राप्त हो।" एक अन्य ऋचा में कहा गया है - "हे पवनदेव! ये सोमरस तीखा होने के कारण दुग्ध में मिलकर तैयार किया गया है।" इस प्रकार हम यहाँ देख सकते हैं कि सोमरस के निर्माण में दुग्ध का उपयोग हुआ है इसी कारण ये मदिरा नहीं हो सकता क्यूंकि उसके निर्माण में दुग्ध का उपयोग नहीं होता।
साथ ही साथ मदिरा का अर्थ है जो "मद" अर्थात नशा उत्पन्न करे। वही सोमरस में शब्द "सोम" शीतलता का प्रतीक है।
ऋग्वेद में ये कहा गया है कि सोमरस का प्रयोग मुख्यतः
यज्ञों में किया जाता था और मुख्यतः देवता ही इसके अधिकारी होते थे। सोमरस का पान मनुष्यों के लिए वर्जित बताया गया है। अश्विनीकुमार के विषय में भी एक कथा है कि उनकी तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर परमपिता ब्रह्मा ने उन्हें सोमरस का अधिकारी होने का वरदान दिया। अर्थात जो भी देवत्व को प्राप्त करता था वो ही सोमरस का पान कर सकता था।
सोमरस का एक रूप औषधि के रूप में भी जाना जाता था। कहा जाता है कि सोम दरअसल एक विशेष पौधा होता था जो गांधार (आज के अफगानिस्तान) में ही मिलता था। इसे पीने के बाद हल्का नशा छा जाता था। महाभारत में ऐसा वर्णित है कि जब भीष्म धृतराष्ट्र के लिए गांधारी का हाथ मांगने गांधार गए तब गांधारी के पिता ने उनका स्वागत सोमरस से किया। वहाँ इस बात का भी वर्णन है कि गान्धार राज भीष्म को ये बताते हैं कि ये दुर्लभ पेय गांधार के अतिरिक्त और कहीं नहीं मिलता।
ऋग्वेद में सोमरस बनाने की विधि भी बताई गयी है:
उच्छिष्टं चम्वोर्भर सोमं पवित्र आ सृज। नि धेहि गोरधि त्वचि।।
औषधि: सोम: सुनोते: पदेनमभिशुण्वन्ति।
अर्थात: मूसल से कुचली हुई सोम को बर्तन से निकालकर पवित्र कुशा के आसन पर रखें और छानने के लिए पवित्र चरम पर रखें। सोम एक औषधि है जिसको कूट-पीसकर इसका रस निकालते हैं।
सोमरस निर्माण की तीन अवस्थाएं बताई गयी हैं:
पेरना: सोम के पत्तों का रस मूसल द्वारा निकाल लेना।
छानना: वस्त्र द्वारा रस से अपशिष्ट को अलग करना।
मिलाना: छाने हुए रस को दुग्ध, घी अथवा शहद के साथ मिलकर सेवन करना।
सोम को गाय के दूध में मिलाने पर गवशिरम् तथा दही में मिलाने पर दध्यशिरम् बनता है। इसके अतिरिक्त शहद या घी के साथ भी इसका मिश्रण किया जाता था। यज्ञ की समाप्ति पर ऋषि मुनि पहले इसे देवताओं को समर्पित करते थे और फिर स्वयं भी इसका पान करते थे। किन्तु बाद में लोगों ने इस ज्ञान को गुप्त रखना आरम्भ कर दिया जिससे सोम की पहचान असंभव हो गयी और इस पेय का ज्ञान लुप्त हो गया।
ऋग्वेद में सोमरस की तुलना संजीवनी से की गयी है और कहा गया है कि नित्य सोमरस पान करने से शरीर में अतुलित बल आता है। कदाचित यही कारण था कि सोमरस के पान के कारण देवता इतने शक्तिशाली होते थे। अगर आधुनिक काल की बात करें तो समय के साथ साथ सोमरस का स्थान पंचामृत ने ले लिया है। पंचामृत को भी दुग्ध, दही, घी, शक्कर एवं शहद से बनाया जाता है। इसे भी प्रथम देवताओं को अर्पित किया जाता है और इसका पान करने से भी शक्ति प्राप्त होती है। अतः पंचामृत को आधुनिक काल का सोमरस कहा जा सकता है।

You may have read or heard about Soma Ras. Most people believe that Soma Ras means wine or alcohol, but this is completely incorrect. Some also think that Soma Ras is another name for Amrita (the nectar of immortality). This misconception exists because many Hindu scriptures depict the gods drinking Soma Ras. Since the gods are often associated with Amrita, people mistakenly assume that Soma Ras and Amrita are the same. However, this is not true.
What Exactly Is Soma Ras?
The Rig Veda describes Soma Ras in great detail. It states:
"May this freshly pressed Soma juice, mixed with milk, be offered to Lord Indra."
Another verse says:
From these references, it is clear that milk was an essential ingredient in the preparation of Soma Ras, which means it could not have been an alcoholic beverage, as alcohol is not made with milk.
Furthermore, the word "Madira" (alcohol) comes from "Mad," meaning intoxication. In contrast, the word "Soma" symbolizes coolness, calmness, and soothing energy, making Soma Ras fundamentally different from alcohol.
Who Was Allowed to Drink Soma Ras?
According to the Rig Veda, Soma Ras was primarily used in Vedic yajnas (sacrificial rituals), and only the gods were entitled to consume it. It was considered forbidden for ordinary humans.
There is also a story about the Ashwini Kumaras, the divine twin physicians. Pleased with their intense penance, Lord Brahma granted them the privilege of drinking Soma Ras. This suggests that only those who attained divine status were eligible to partake of Soma Ras.
Soma as a Sacred Medicinal Plant
Another form of Soma was known as a medicinal herb. It is believed that Soma was actually a rare plant found in Gandhara (modern-day Afghanistan). Consuming its extract produced a mild intoxicating effect.
The Mahabharata mentions that when Bhishma visited Gandhara to seek Princess Gandhari's hand in marriage for King Dhritarashtra, King Subala welcomed him with Soma Ras. The king also informed Bhishma that this rare drink was found nowhere except Gandhara.
How Was Soma Ras Prepared?
The Rig Veda also describes the process of preparing Soma Ras:
Ucchiṣṭaṁ camvor bhar somaṁ pavitra ā sṛja, ni dhehi gor adhi tvaci.
Auṣadhiḥ somaḥ sunoteḥ padenam abhiṣuṇvanti.
Meaning:
The Soma plant is crushed with a pestle, its juice is collected in a vessel, filtered through sacred grass (Kusha), and strained through a purified animal hide. Soma is a medicinal herb whose juice is extracted by pounding and grinding.
Three Stages of Preparing Soma Ras
Pressing: The leaves of the Soma plant were crushed with a pestle to extract the juice.- Filtering: The juice was strained through cloth to remove impurities.
- Mixing: The purified juice was mixed with milk, ghee, or honey before being consumed.
When mixed with cow's milk, it was called Gavashiram, and when mixed with curd, it became Dadhyashiram. It was also blended with honey or clarified butter (ghee).
At the end of a yajna, sages first offered Soma Ras to the gods, and only afterward did they partake of it themselves.
Over time, however, the knowledge of identifying and preparing the Soma plant was kept secret. Eventually, the identity of the plant was lost, and the ancient knowledge of Soma Ras disappeared.
Soma Ras and Panchamrit
The Rig Veda compares Soma Ras to Sanjivani, the legendary life-restoring elixir, and states that regular consumption of Soma Ras endowed the body with extraordinary strength. This may explain why the gods were described as being immensely powerful after drinking it.
In modern times, Panchamrit has largely taken the place of Soma Ras in Hindu rituals. Panchamrit is prepared using milk, curd, ghee, sugar, and honey. Like Soma Ras, it is first offered to the deities before being consumed as a sacred offering.
Because of these similarities, Panchamrit can be regarded as the modern-day equivalent of Soma Ras.
