आरी की कीमत
एक बार की बात है एक बढ़ई था। वह दूर किसी शहर में एक सेठ के यहाँ काम करने गया। एक दिन काम करते-करते उसकी आरी टूट गयी। बिना आरी के वह काम नहीं कर सकता था, और वापस अपने गाँव लौटना भी मुश्किल था, इसलिए वह शहर से सटे एक गाँव पहुंचा। इधर-उधर पूछने पर उसे लोहार का पता चल गया।
वह लोहार के पास गया और बोला-
भाई मेरी आरी टूट गयी है, तुम मेरे लिए एक अच्छी सी आरी बना दो।
लोहार बोला, “बना दूंगा, पर इसमें समय लगेगा, तुम कल इसी वक़्त आकर मुझसे आरी ले सकते हो।”
बढ़ई को तो जल्दी थी सो उसने कहा, ” भाई कुछ पैसे अधिक ले लो पर मुझे अभी आरी बना कर दे दो!”
बढ़ई तैयार हो गया, और अगले दिन आकर अपनी आरी ले गया।
आरी बहुत अच्छी बनी थी। बढ़ई पहले की अपेक्षा आसानी से और पहले से बेहतर काम कर पा रहा था।
बढ़ई ने ख़ुशी से ये बात अपने सेठ को भी बताई और लोहार की खूब प्रसंशा की।
सेठ ने भी आरी को करीब से देखा!
“इसके कितने पैसे लिए उस लोहार ने?”, सेठ ने बढ़ई से पूछा।
“दस रुपये!”
सेठ ने मन ही मन सोचा कि शहर में इतनी अच्छी आरी के तो कोई भी तीस रुपये देने को तैयार हो जाएगा। क्यों न उस लोहार से ऐसी दर्जनों आरियाँ बनवा कर शहर में बेचा जाये!
अगले दिन सेठ लोहार के पास पहुंचा और बोला, “मैं तुमसे ढेर सारी आरियाँ बनवाऊंगा और हर आरी के दस रुपये दूंगा, लेकिन मेरी एक शर्त है… आज के बाद तुम सिर्फ मेरे लिए काम करोगे। किसी और को आरी बनाकर नहीं बेचोगे।”
“मैं आपकी शर्त नहीं मान सकता!” लोहार बोला।
सेठ ने सोचा कि लोहार को और अधिक पैसे चाहिए। वह बोला, “ठीक है मैं तुम्हे हर आरी के पन्द्रह रूपए दूंगा….अब तो मेरी शर्त मंजूर है।”
लोहार ने कहा, “नहीं मैं अभी भी आपकी शर्त नहीं मान सकता। मैं अपनी मेहनत का मूल्य खुद निर्धारित करूँगा। मैं आपके लिए काम नहीं कर सकता। मैं इस दाम से संतुष्ट हूँ इससे ज्यादा दाम मुझे नहीं चाहिए।”
“बड़े अजीब आदमी हो…भला कोई आती हुई लक्ष्मी को मना करता है?”, व्यापारी ने आश्चर्य से बोला।
लोहार बोला, “आप मुझसे आरी लेंगे फिर उसे दुगने दाम में गरीब खरीदारों को बेचेंगे। लेकिन मैं किसी गरीब के शोषण का माध्यम नहीं बन सकता। अगर मैं लालच करूँगा तो उसका भुगतान कई लोगों को करना पड़ेगा, इसलिए आपका ये प्रस्ताव मैं स्वीकार नहीं कर सकता।”
सेठ समझ गया कि एक सच्चे और ईमानदार व्यक्ति को दुनिया की कोई दौलत नहीं खरीद सकती। वह अपने सिद्धांतों पर अडिग रहता है।
अपने हित से ऊपर उठ कर और लोगों के बारे में सोचना एक महान गुण है। लोहार चाहता तो आसानी से अच्छे पैसे कमा सकता था पर वह जानता था कि उसका जरा सा लालच बहुत से ज़रूरतमंद लोगों के लिए नुक्सानदायक साबित होगा और वह सेठ के लालच में नहीं पड़ता।
शिक्षा
अगर ध्यान से देखा जाए तो लोहार की तरह ही हममे से अधिकतर लोग जानते हैं कि कब हमारे स्वार्थ की वजह से बाकी लोगों को नुक्सान होता है पर ये जानते हुए भी हम अपने फायदे के लिए काम करते हैं। हमें इस बर्ताव को बदलना होगा, बाकी लोग क्या करते हैं इसकी परवाह किये बगैर हमें खुद ये निर्णय करना होगा कि हम अपने फायदे के लिए ऐसा कोई काम न करें जिससे औरों को तकलीफ पहुँचती हो।

The Price of a Saw🍁
Once upon a time, there was a carpenter. He went to work for a wealthy merchant in a distant city. One day, while working, his saw broke. Without it, he could not continue his work, and returning to his village was also difficult. So he went to a nearby village of the city.
After asking around, he found the blacksmith.
He went to the blacksmith and said,
“Brother, my saw has broken. Please make a good one for me.”
The blacksmith replied,
“I will make it, but it will take time. You can come back tomorrow at this time and collect it.”
The carpenter was in a hurry, so he said,
“Please take some extra money, but give me the saw right now!”
The blacksmith explained,
“It is not about money, brother. If I rush while making tools, I will not be satisfied with my own work. I never compromise on the quality of my tools.”
The carpenter agreed and came back the next day to collect his saw.
The saw was very well made. The carpenter was now able to work more easily and better than before.
Happily, he told his merchant about it and praised the blacksmith a lot.
The merchant also closely examined the saw and asked,
“How much did that blacksmith charge for it?”
“Ten rupees,” replied the carpenter.
The merchant thought to himself that such a good saw could easily sell for thirty rupees in the city. Why not get dozens of such saws made from the blacksmith and sell them in the market?
The next day, the merchant went to the blacksmith and said,
“I will order many saws from you and pay you ten rupees for each, but I have one condition… from now on, you will only work for me. You will not sell saws to anyone else.”
“I cannot accept your condition,” said the blacksmith.
The merchant thought the blacksmith wanted more money. He said,
“Alright, I will give you fifteen rupees per saw… now will you accept my condition?”
The blacksmith replied,
“No, I still cannot accept your condition. I determine the value of my own hard work. I cannot work for you. I am satisfied with this price; I do not need more.”
The merchant said in surprise,
“You are a very strange man… who refuses incoming wealth?”
The blacksmith said,
“You will buy saws from me and sell them at double price to poor buyers. I cannot become a means of exploitation for the poor. If I become greedy, many people will have to pay the price. That is why I cannot accept your offer.”
The merchant understood that no amount of wealth can buy a truly honest person. Such a person stands firm on his principles.
Thinking beyond personal gain and caring for others is a great virtue. The blacksmith could have easily earned more money, but he knew that even a small greed of his could harm many needy people, and he did not fall into the merchant’s greed.
Lesson:
If we observe carefully, most of us, like the blacksmith, know when our self-interest harms others. Yet even knowing this, we often act for personal gain. We must change this behavior. Regardless of what others do, we should decide not to do anything for our benefit if it causes harm or suffering to others.
