स्वामी रामकृष्ण परमहंस और उनके गुरु तोतापूरी की कहानी भारतीय आध्यात्मिक इतिहास के सबसे रोचक प्रसंगों में से एक है। यह कथा दो विपरीत विचारधाराओं के मिलन की है: एक तरफ 'साकार भक्ति' (रामकृष्ण) और दूसरी तरफ 'निराकार वेदांत' (तोतापूरी)।
यहाँ तोतापूरी के आगमन और उनके जीवन के उस परिवर्तन की लंबी कथा है जिसने उन्हें पूर्ण बनाया:
तोतापूरी एक 'नागा संन्यासी' थे जो अद्वैत वेदांत के प्रकांड विद्वान थे। वे पिछले 40 वर्षों से लगातार साधना कर रहे थे और उन्हें 'निर्विकल्प समाधि' (अंतिम सत्य) प्राप्त थी। वे कभी भी एक स्थान पर तीन दिन से अधिक नहीं रुकते थे।
जब वे दक्षिणेश्वर मंदिर पहुंचे, तो उन्होंने युवा रामकृष्ण को मंदिर के चबूतरे पर बैठा देखा। तोतापूरी उनकी आँखों की चमक और चेहरे का तेज देखकर समझ गए कि यह कोई साधारण पुजारी नहीं है। उन्होंने रामकृष्ण से पूछा— "क्या तुम अद्वैत वेदांत की शिक्षा लेना चाहोगे?"
रामकृष्ण ने मासूमियत से उत्तर दिया— "मैं अपनी माँ (काली) से पूछकर बताता हूँ।" वे मंदिर गए, माँ से आदेश लिया और वापस आकर कहा— "माँ ने हाँ कह दी है।" तोतापूरी मुस्कुराए, क्योंकि वे उस समय 'माँ काली' को केवल एक भ्रम (माया) मानते थे।
तोतापूरी ने रामकृष्ण को दीक्षा दी और उन्हें ध्यान में बैठने को कहा। उन्होंने कहा— "अपने मन से हर रूप, हर छवि को निकाल दो और केवल शून्य (ब्रह्म) पर ध्यान लगाओ।"
रामकृष्ण ध्यान में बैठे, लेकिन जैसे ही वे मन को शांत करते, माँ काली का सुंदर, ममतामयी स्वरूप उनके सामने आ जाता। वे भावुक हो जाते और अद्वैत (शून्य) में नहीं डूब पाते। उन्होंने तोतापूरी से कहा— "महाराज, मैं जैसे ही आँखें बंद करता हूँ, माँ खड़ी हो जाती हैं। मैं उन्हें पार नहीं कर पा रहा।"
तोतापूरी थोड़े कठोर हुए। उन्होंने जमीन से कांच का एक टुकड़ा उठाया और रामकृष्ण के माथे (तीसरी आँख के स्थान) पर जोर से चुभा दिया। उन्होंने चिल्लाकर कहा— "जब माँ की छवि आए, तो ज्ञान की तलवार से उसके दो टुकड़े कर दो!"
अगली बार जब रामकृष्ण ध्यान में बैठे, तो उन्होंने अपनी इच्छाशक्ति से 'ज्ञान की तलवार' उठाई और माँ की उस छवि का भेदन कर दिया। उसी क्षण वे निर्विकल्प समाधि में चले गए। वे तीन दिनों तक जड़वत बैठे रहे। तोतापूरी दंग रह गए— जिस सत्य को पाने में उन्हें 40 साल लगे, रामकृष्ण ने उसे तीन दिन में पा लिया।
तोतापूरी रामकृष्ण को सिखाने आए थे, लेकिन वे खुद अभी एक बड़ी सीख से वंचित थे। वे मानते थे कि यह संसार और देवी-देवता सब मिथ्या हैं। वे रामकृष्ण के भक्ति भाव और माँ काली के सामने रोने का मजाक उड़ाते थे। वे कहते थे— "यह मिट्टी की मूरत क्या कर सकती है?"
तभी तोतापूरी को बंगाल की जलवायु के कारण भयंकर पेचिश हो गई। उनके पेट में असहनीय दर्द होने लगा। वे शरीर को नश्वर मानते थे, इसलिए उन्होंने दर्द पर ध्यान नहीं दिया, लेकिन दर्द इतना बढ़ा कि वे ध्यान भी नहीं लगा पा रहे थे।
उन्हें अपने शरीर पर क्रोध आया। उन्होंने सोचा— "यह शरीर साधना में बाधा बन रहा है, इसे गंगा में विसर्जित कर देना चाहिए।"
आधी रात को तोतापूरी गंगा के पानी में गहरे उतरने लगे ताकि डूबकर प्राण त्याग सकें। वे चलते गए, बीच धारा तक पहुंच गए, लेकिन उस रात गंगा में चमत्कार हुआ— पानी केवल उनके घुटनों तक ही रहा। वे पूरी नदी पार कर गए लेकिन पानी गहरा नहीं हुआ।
वे हैरान होकर किनारे पर बैठ गए। तभी उन्हें ज्ञान हुआ कि जो पानी कल तक गहरा था, आज वह सूखा जैसा क्यों है? उन्हें समझ आया कि यह 'माया' या 'शक्ति' का खेल है। उनकी मर्जी के बिना एक पत्ता भी नहीं हिल सकता और यहाँ तक कि मौत भी उनकी मर्जी के बिना नहीं आ सकती।
वे भागते हुए मंदिर आए और माँ काली की प्रतिमा के सामने दंडवत प्रणाम किया। उन्होंने रामकृष्ण से कहा— "ब्रह्म और शक्ति एक ही हैं। जैसे पानी और उसकी शीतलता, जैसे आग और उसकी दाहक शक्ति। मैं अब तक अधूरा था।"
तोतापूरी और रामकृष्ण की यह कथा हमें सिखाती है कि:
ज्ञान (वेदांत) और भक्ति (प्रेम) एक ही सिक्के के दो पहलू हैं।
बिना शक्ति के शिव शव के समान हैं, और बिना शिव के शक्ति निराधार है।

The Story of Swami Ramakrishna Paramahansa and His Guru Totapuri
The story of Swami Ramakrishna Paramahansa and his guru Totapuri is one of the most fascinating episodes in Indian spiritual history. It is a tale of the meeting of two seemingly opposite paths: devotion to a personal form of God (Ramakrishna) and formless Advaita Vedanta (Totapuri).
Totapuri: The Master of Advaita Vedanta
Totapuri was a Naga monk and a great scholar of Advaita Vedanta. He had spent nearly 40 years in intense spiritual practice and had attained Nirvikalpa Samadhi (the highest state of realization). He never stayed in one place for more than three days.
When he arrived at the Dakshineswar Temple, he saw the young Ramakrishna sitting on the temple platform. Seeing the radiance in his eyes and the spiritual glow on his face, Totapuri immediately realized that he was no ordinary priest.
He asked him,
“Would you like to learn Advaita Vedanta?”
Ramakrishna innocently replied,
“I will ask my Mother (Goddess Kali) and then tell you.”
He went to the temple, sought permission from Mother Kali, returned, and said,
“Mother has given her consent.”
Totapuri smiled because, at that time, he considered Mother Kali merely an illusion (Maya).
The Lesson of Formlessness
Totapuri initiated Ramakrishna and instructed him to meditate.
He said,
“Remove every form, every image, and every thought from your mind. Focus only on the Absolute (Brahman).”
Ramakrishna sat in meditation, but every time he tried to quiet his mind, the beautiful and compassionate image of Mother Kali appeared before him. He became overwhelmed with devotion and could not dissolve into the formless state.
He told Totapuri,
“Master, whenever I close my eyes, Mother stands before me. I cannot go beyond her.”
Totapuri became a little stern. He picked up a piece of glass from the ground and pressed it firmly against Ramakrishna’s forehead (between the eyebrows, the location associated with the third eye).
He shouted,
“When Mother’s image appears, cut it into two with the sword of knowledge!”
The next time Ramakrishna meditated, he used his willpower to imagine a sword of wisdom and mentally pierced through the image of Mother Kali.
At that very moment, he entered Nirvikalpa Samadhi.
He remained completely absorbed in that state for three days.
Totapuri was astonished. The truth that had taken him 40 years to realize, Ramakrishna had attained in just three days.
Totapuri’s Greatest Lesson
Totapuri had come to teach Ramakrishna, but he himself still had an important lesson to learn.
He believed that the world and all deities were unreal. He often mocked Ramakrishna’s devotional attitude and his tears before Mother Kali.
He would say,
“What can this clay idol possibly do?”
Soon afterward, because of Bengal’s climate, Totapuri developed severe dysentery. He suffered unbearable abdominal pain.
Since he considered the body temporary and insignificant, he initially ignored the pain. But eventually, it became so intense that he could no longer meditate.
Angry at his own body, he thought,
The Miracle at the Ganges
At midnight, Totapuri walked into the Ganges intending to drown himself.
He kept walking farther and farther, expecting deep water.
But something extraordinary happened.
That night, the water never rose above his knees.
He crossed almost the entire river, yet the water never became deep enough.
Astonished, he sat on the riverbank and suddenly realized:
What was deep yesterday appears shallow today. This is the play of Divine Power (Shakti). Not even a leaf moves without Her will, and even death cannot come without Her permission.
At that moment, he understood what he had been missing all along.
He rushed back to the temple, prostrated before Mother Kali, and said to Ramakrishna,
“Brahman and Shakti are one and the same—just as water and its coolness, or fire and its burning power. Until now, I was incomplete.”
The Spiritual Lessons of This Story
This story teaches us that:
- Knowledge (Vedanta) and devotion (Bhakti) are two sides of the same coin.
- Without Shakti, Shiva is like a lifeless body; without Shiva, Shakti has no foundation.
- Even a true guru can learn something new from his disciple.
