गांव की चौपाल पर शाम का समय था। हल्की ठंडी हवा चल रही थी और कुछ बुजुर्ग आपस में बैठकर जीवन की बातें कर रहे थे। उन्हीं में से दो पुराने मित्र, रामदयाल जी और हरिप्रसाद जी, काफी दिनों बाद मिले थे। बातचीत करते-करते बात बच्चों और परिवार तक पहुँच गई।
रामदयाल जी ने गर्व से कहा,
“मेरी एक पोती है, अब शादी के लायक हो गई है। पढ़ी-लिखी है, बी.ए. किया है और शहर में नौकरी भी करती है। सुंदर है, समझदार है। अगर आपकी नजर में कोई अच्छा लड़का हो तो बताइएगा।”
हरिप्रसाद जी मुस्कुराए और बोले,
“अच्छा, तो बताइए आपको कैसा परिवार चाहिए?”
रामदयाल जी तुरंत बोले,
“बस ज्यादा कुछ नहीं चाहिए। लड़का पढ़ा-लिखा हो, अच्छी नौकरी करता हो, बड़ा घर हो, गाड़ी हो, अच्छी तनख्वाह हो। और हाँ, सबसे जरूरी बात… लड़का अकेला होना चाहिए। उसके माता-पिता, भाई-बहन कोई न हों, ताकि आगे चलकर घर में झगड़े न हों।”
यह सुनकर हरिप्रसाद जी कुछ देर चुप हो गए। उनकी आँखों में हल्की नमी उतर आई। उन्होंने गहरी साँस ली और धीमे स्वर में कहा,
“मेरे एक मित्र का पोता है। बहुत अच्छा लड़का है। माता-पिता एक दुर्घटना में गुजर गए। कोई भाई-बहन भी नहीं है। अच्छी नौकरी करता है, बड़ा बंगला है, गाड़ी है, नौकर-चाकर सब हैं।”
रामदयाल जी खुशी से बोले,
“अरे वाह! फिर तो बात पक्की समझो।”
हरिप्रसाद जी ने गंभीर होकर कहा,
“लेकिन उस लड़के की भी एक शर्त है।”
“क्या?” रामदयाल जी ने उत्सुकता से पूछा।
“उसे भी ऐसी लड़की चाहिए, जिसका कोई अपना न हो। न माता-पिता, न भाई-बहन, न रिश्तेदार… ताकि उसकी जिंदगी में किसी का दखल न रहे।”
रामदयाल जी गुस्से में बोले,
“ये कैसी बेकार बात है? भला कोई अपने परिवार के बिना कैसे जी सकता है? सुख-दुख में अपने ही तो काम आते हैं। अगर हमारे परिवार को कुछ हो जाए तो हमारी बेटी के साथ कौन खड़ा होगा?”
हरिप्रसाद जी ने शांत स्वर में कहा,
“बस दोस्त, यही बात मैं तुम्हें समझाना चाहता था। जब अपनी बेटी के लिए परिवार जरूरी लगता है, तो दूसरे के परिवार से परेशानी क्यों? माता-पिता, भाई-बहन और रिश्तेदार जीवन की असली ताकत होते हैं। परिवार सिर्फ लोगों का समूह नहीं, बल्कि सुख-दुख बाँटने वाला सहारा होता है।”
रामदयाल जी अब बिल्कुल शांत थे। उन्हें अपनी गलती समझ आ चुकी थी। उन्होंने सिर झुकाकर कहा,
“तुम सही कह रहे हो मित्र। धन-दौलत से घर बड़ा बन सकता है, लेकिन परिवार से ही जिंदगी बड़ी बनती है।”
उस दिन चौपाल में बैठे सभी लोगों ने यह बात दिल से महसूस की कि इंसान चाहे कितना भी अमीर क्यों न हो जाए, अगर उसके पास अपना परिवार नहीं है तो जीवन अधूरा ही रहता है।

One evening, people were gathered at the village square. A cool breeze was blowing, and a few elders were sitting together discussing life. Among them were two old friends, Ramdayal Ji and Hariprasad Ji, who were meeting after a long time. As they talked, the conversation eventually turned to children and family.
Ramdayal Ji proudly said,
“I have a granddaughter who is now of marriageable age. She is well educated, has completed her bachelor's degree, and works in the city. She is beautiful and intelligent. If you know of a good boy, please let me know.”
Hariprasad Ji smiled and asked,
“Alright, then tell me, what kind of family are you looking for?”
Ramdayal Ji immediately replied,
“Nothing too complicated. The boy should be well educated, have a good job, a big house, a car, and a handsome salary. And yes, most importantly… he should be the only child. He shouldn’t have parents, brothers, or sisters, so that there won’t be any family disputes in the future.”

“A friend of mine has a grandson. He is an excellent young man. His parents passed away in an accident, and he has no siblings either. He has a good job, a large bungalow, a car, and household staff.”
Ramdayal Ji happily said,

Hariprasad Ji replied seriously,
“But that boy also has one condition.”

Hariprasad Ji answered,

Ramdayal Ji became upset and said,

Ramdayal Ji became silent. He had realized his mistake. Bowing his head, he said,
“You are right, my friend. Wealth can make a house bigger, but only family can make life richer.”
Everyone sitting at the village square deeply felt the truth of those words that day: No matter how wealthy a person becomes, life remains incomplete without family.
