🍁पत्थरों पर लिखी जीत
घने जंगलों और ऊँचे पर्वतों के बीच बसे एक प्राचीन गुरुकुल में दूर-दूर से विद्यार्थी शिक्षा लेने आते थे। उसी गुरुकुल में एक दुबला-पतला, शांत स्वभाव का बालक भी पढ़ता था—नाम था वरद।
लेकिन बाकी बच्चों से वह बिल्कुल अलग था। जहाँ दूसरे शिष्य कठिन श्लोक पलभर में याद कर लेते, वहीं वरद एक साधारण पाठ भी ठीक से नहीं समझ पाता था।
गुरुकुल के बच्चे उसका मज़ाक उड़ाते—
“अरे, इसे तो ‘मंदबुद्धि वरद’ कहना चाहिए!”
उनकी हँसी उसके दिल को तीर की तरह चुभती।
गुरु आचार्य सोमदेव ने भी उसे बहुत समझाया, बार-बार पढ़ाया, पर परिणाम वही रहा।
एक दिन आचार्य ने भारी मन से कहा—
“बेटा, हर व्यक्ति हर काम के लिए नहीं बना होता। शायद विद्या तुम्हारे भाग्य में नहीं है। घर लौट जाओ।”
यह सुनते ही वरद की आँखें भर आईं।
उस रात उसने अकेले नदी किनारे बैठकर बहुत रोया। अगले ही सुबह वह अपना छोटा-सा झोला उठाकर घर की ओर निकल पड़ा।
दोपहर की तपती धूप… सुनसान रास्ता… और कई कोस चलने के बाद उसे तेज प्यास लगी। तभी दूर उसे एक पुराना कुआँ दिखाई दिया।
वह वहाँ पहुँचा तो कुछ महिलाएँ रस्सी से पानी खींच रही थीं।
थके हुए वरद ने पानी पिया और जैसे ही लौटने लगा, उसकी नजर पत्थर पर पड़े गहरे निशानों पर पड़ी।
वह चौंक गया।
“इतने कठोर पत्थर पर ये गहरे कटाव कैसे?” उसने आश्चर्य से पूछा।
एक बूढ़ी महिला मुस्कुराई—
“बेटा, ये किसी हथियार के निशान नहीं हैं। वर्षों से रस्सी के बार-बार रगड़ खाने से पत्थर भी घिस गया।”
वरद स्तब्ध रह गया।
उसके भीतर जैसे बिजली कौंध गई।
उसकी आँखों में फिर चमक लौट आई।
वह तुरंत वापस गुरुकुल की ओर दौड़ पड़ा।
गुरुकुल पहुँचते ही उसने गुरुजी के चरण पकड़ लिए—
“गुरुदेव! मुझे एक आखिरी अवसर दीजिए। मैं हार नहीं मानूँगा।”
उस दिन के बाद वरद बदल चुका था।
जब सारे विद्यार्थी सो जाते, तब भी उसकी कुटिया में दीपक जलता रहता।
वह रात-रात भर अभ्यास करता।
गलती करता… फिर दोहराता… फिर सीखता।
धीरे-धीरे शब्द उसके मित्र बनने लगे।
श्लोक उसके मन में उतरने लगे।
जिस बालक को सब मूर्ख समझते थे, वही अब सबसे कठिन प्रश्नों का उत्तर देने लगा।
साल बीतते गए…
एक दिन पूरे राज्य में घोषणा हुई—
“महान संस्कृत आचार्य वरदराज पधार रहे हैं!”
वही वरद, जिसे कभी गुरुकुल से निकाल दिया गया था, अब विद्या का सूर्य बन चुका था। उसके लिखे ग्रंथ दूर-दूर तक पढ़े जाने लगे। राजा भी उसका सम्मान करने लगे।
सभा में अपने शिष्यों को संबोधित करते हुए वरदराज ने कहा—
उस दिन पूरा गुरुकुल तालियों से गूंज उठा…
और पत्थरों पर पड़े रस्सी के निशान एक अमर सीख बन गए।

In an ancient Gurukul nestled between dense forests and towering mountains, students from faraway places came to receive an education. Among them was a thin, quiet boy named Varad.
But he was very different from the other students. While the others could memorize difficult verses in no time, Varad struggled to understand even the simplest lessons.
The children in the Gurukul often mocked him.
“Hey, we should call him ‘Slow-Witted Varad’!”
Their laughter pierced his heart like arrows.
His teacher, Acharya Somdev, patiently explained the lessons to him again and again, but nothing seemed to change.
One day, with a heavy heart, the teacher said,
“My child, not everyone is meant for every path. Perhaps learning is not written in your destiny. You should return home.”
Hearing these words, Varad’s eyes filled with tears.
That night, he sat alone by the riverbank and cried for a long time. The next morning, he picked up his small bag and started walking back home.
The afternoon sun was scorching, the road was deserted, and after walking many miles, he became extremely thirsty. In the distance, he spotted an old well.
When he reached it, a few women were drawing water with ropes.
After drinking some water, Varad was about to leave when he noticed deep grooves carved into a stone near the well.
He was astonished.
“How did such deep marks appear on this hard stone?” he asked.
An elderly woman smiled and replied,
“My son, these are not marks made by weapons. For years, the rope has rubbed against the stone again and again, and even the stone has worn away.”
Varad stood speechless.
It felt as if lightning had struck inside him.
A spark returned to his eyes.
Without wasting a moment, he ran back to the Gurukul.
As soon as he arrived, he fell at his teacher’s feet.
“Guruji, please give me one last chance. I will not give up.”
From that day onward, Varad was a changed person.
Even after all the students had gone to sleep, the lamp in his hut remained lit.
He practiced late into the night.
He made mistakes… corrected them… repeated them… and kept learning.
Slowly, words became his friends.
Verses began to settle into his mind.
The boy whom everyone had once considered foolish was now answering the most difficult questions with ease.
Years passed.
One day, an announcement echoed throughout the kingdom:
“The great Sanskrit scholar Varadaraja is arriving!”
The same Varad who had once been asked to leave the Gurukul had now become a shining sun of knowledge. His books were read far and wide, and even kings honored him.
Addressing his students in an assembly, Varadaraja said:
That day, the entire Gurukul resounded with applause.
And the rope marks on the stone became an eternal lesson for generations to come.
