एक समय की बात है, मालवा राज्य में कीर्तिसेन नाम का एक बहुत ही अमीर और बुद्धिमान व्यापारी रहता था। उसका एक परम मित्र था जिसका नाम था वीरबाहु। दोनों की दोस्ती की मिसाल पूरे राज्य में दी जाती थी। वे एक-दूसरे के लिए जान भी देने को तैयार रहते थे।
एक बार कीर्तिसेन को व्यापार के सिलसिले में समुद्री मार्ग से किसी दूसरे देश जाना पड़ा। जाने से पहले उसने अपनी पूरी धन-दौलत, सोने-चांदी के सिक्के और कीमती जेवरात एक बड़े लोहे के संदूक में बंद किए। उसने वह संदूक वीरबाहु को सौंपते हुए कहा, "मित्र, मेरे पीछे से मेरी पत्नी और बच्चों को अगर किसी चीज़ की जरूरत पड़े, तो इसमें से दे देना। बाकी यह अमानत तुम्हारे पास सुरक्षित है।"
कीर्तिसेन के जाने के बाद, कई महीने बीत गए और उसकी कोई खबर नहीं आई। धीरे-धीरे अफवाह फैल गई कि कीर्तिसेन का जहाज समुद्र में डूब गया है और उसकी मौत हो गई है।
यह सुनकर वीरबाहु के मन में लालच आ गया। उसने सोचा, "जब कीर्तिसेन अब इस दुनिया में नहीं रहा, तो यह सारी धन-दौलत मेरी हुई।" उसने संदूक खोला, उसमें से सारा असली सोना-चांदी निकाल लिया और उसकी जगह उतने ही वजन के लोहे के टुकड़े और पत्थर भर दिए। उसने संदूक को वैसा ही बंद कर दिया।
दो साल बाद, हर किसी को हैरान करते हुए, कीर्तिसेन सकुशल वापस लौट आया। वह एक भयानक समुद्री तूफान से बच गया था। वापस आकर जब वह अपने मित्र वीरबाहु से मिला, तो वीरबाहु ने ऊपर से बहुत खुशी दिखाई और उसका संदूक उसे वापस सौंप दिया।
कीर्तिसेन ने जब घर जाकर संदूक खोला, तो उसके होश उड़ गए। उसमें सोने की जगह सिर्फ पत्थर भरे थे। वह तुरंत समझ गया कि यह काम उसके परम मित्र वीरबाहु के अलावा कोई नहीं कर सकता।
अगर कीर्तिसेन सीधा राजा के पास जाता, तो उसके पास कोई सबूत नहीं था कि संदूक में पहले सोना था। इसलिए उसने बिना किसी से कुछ कहे एक अनोखी योजना बनाई।
उसने बाजार से दो हुबहू दिखने वाले बंदर खरीदे। उसने एक बंदर का नाम रखा 'वीरबाहु'और दूसरे का नाम 'कीर्तिसेन'। उसने 'वीरबाहु' नाम के बंदर को केवल अपने हाथ से खाना खाने की आदत डाली और उसे बहुत प्यार किया।
कुछ दिनों बाद, कीर्तिसेन ने अपने घर पर एक बड़ा उत्सव रखा और वीरबाहु को सपरिवार (अपने छोटे बेटे के साथ) आमंत्रित किया। उत्सव के दौरान, जब सब लोग बातचीत में व्यस्त थे, कीर्तिसेन ने चुपके से वीरबाहु के छोटे बेटे को महल के एक गुप्त तहखाने में छिपा दिया और उसे खिलौने और मिठाइयाँ दे दीं।
उत्सव खत्म होने के बाद वीरबाहु ने अपने बेटे को ढूंढना शुरू किया। वह कहीं नहीं मिला। वीरबाहु रोने लगा। तब कीर्तिसेन रोने का नाटक करते हुए बाहर आया और उसके हाथ में 'वीरबाहु' नाम का बंदर थमा दिया।
कीर्तिसेन ने कहा, "मित्र! मुझे माफ कर दो। मैं एक बहुत ही अजीब घटना का गवाह बना हूँ। तुम्हारा बेटा आंगन में खेल रहा था कि अचानक आसमान से बिजली कड़की और तुम्हारा बेटा इस बंदर के रूप में बदल गया! देखो, यह बंदर तुम्हारे नाम पर ही प्रतिक्रिया दे रहा है।"
वीरबाहु गुस्से से लाल-पीला हो गया। उसने चिल्लाकर कहा, "क्या बकवास है! क्या कभी कोई इंसान का बच्चा बंदर बन सकता है? तुम झूठ बोल रहे हो, तुमने मेरे बेटे को छुपाया है। चलो राजा के दरबार में!"
मामला राजा के सामने पहुंचा। वीरबाहु ने रोते हुए कहा, "महाराज! इस कीर्तिसेन ने मेरे बेटे को गायब कर दिया है और कह रहा है कि वह बंदर बन गया। भला ऐसा कभी हो सकता है?"
राजा ने कीर्तिसेन से पूछा, "कीर्तिसेन, तुम्हारे पास अपनी बात का क्या प्रमाण है?"
कीर्तिसेन ने हाथ जोड़कर कहा, "महाराज! इस संसार में सब कुछ संभव है। अगर किसी बंद संदूक में रखा हुआ शुद्ध सोना, दो साल के भीतर लोहे के टुकड़ों और पत्थरों में बदल सकता है... तो एक जीता-जागता बच्चा बंदर में क्यों नहीं बदल सकता?"
राजा बहुत बुद्धिमान थे। वे तुरंत कीर्तिसेन का इशारा समझ गए। उन्होंने वीरबाहु को सख्ती से देखा। वीरबाहु समझ गया कि उसकी चोरी पकड़ी गई है। उसने राजा के सामने घुटने टेक दिए और अपनी गलती स्वीकार कर ली। उसने कीर्तिसेन का सारा सोना लौटा दिया और कीर्तिसेन ने उसके बेटे को सुरक्षित वापस सौंप दिया।
कहानी समाप्त कर बेताल राजा विक्रम की पीठ पर जोर से हंसा और बोला:
"हे राजन विक्रम! अब बताओ कि इस कहानी में सबसे चतुर और नीतिवान कौन था? वह कीर्तिसेन जिसने बिना लड़ाई-झगड़े के अपना सोना वापस पा लिया? या वह राजा जिसने बिना किसी गवाह के सिर्फ एक इशारे से सच का पता लगा लिया? सही उत्तर दो राजन, वरना तुम्हारा सिर फट जाएगा!"
राजा विक्रम ने सोच-समझकर उत्तर दिया:
"बेताल, इस कहानी में सबसे बड़ी चतुराई और नीति का परिचय कीर्तिसेन ने दिया।
राजा का काम तो न्याय करना था ही, और सामने आए तथ्यों के आधार पर निर्णय लेना उनकी जिम्मेदारी थी। कीर्तिसेन ने खुद ही सारा सच आईने की तरह साफ कर दिया था।
कीर्तिसेन की बुद्धिमानी इसलिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ थी क्योंकि उसने अपने मित्र के विश्वासघात को जानने के बाद भी न तो आपा खोया, न हिंसा का सहारा लिया और न ही बिना सबूत के अदालत का समय बर्बाद किया। उसने 'जैसे को तैसा' की नीति अपनाई। उसने वीरबाहु के लालच को उसी के पुत्र-मोह के जरिए काटा। उसने एक ऐसी स्थिति पैदा कर दी जहाँ चोर को खुद यह स्वीकार करना पड़ा कि असंभव चीजें (जैसे सोने का पत्थर बनना या बच्चे का बंदर बनना) प्राकृतिक रूप से नहीं, बल्कि इंसानी धोखे से होती हैं। उसने बिना अपनी दोस्ती का तमाशा बनाए अपना धन वापस पा लिया।"
"सटीक उत्तर राजन!" बेताल ने कहा, "तुमने कीर्तिसेन की कूटनीति का सही मूल्यांकन किया। लेकिन शर्त के अनुसार तुम फिर बोल पड़े, इसलिए मैं चला!"
और बेताल एक बार फिर अट्टहास करता हुआ अंधेरे आकाश में उड़ गया और पेड़ पर जा लटका। वीर विक्रम ने अपनी तलवार संभाली और दोबारा बेताल को लाने के लिए पीछे चल दिए।

Once upon a time, in the kingdom of Malwa, there lived a very wealthy and intelligent merchant named Kirtisen. He had a close friend named Veerbahu. Their friendship was famous throughout the kingdom, and they were always ready to sacrifice their lives for one another.
One day, Kirtisen had to travel overseas for business. Before leaving, he locked all his wealth, gold and silver coins, and precious jewelry in a large iron chest. Handing it over to Veerbahu, he said, “My friend, if my wife or children need anything while I am away, give it to them from this chest. Otherwise, keep this treasure safe.”
After Kirtisen left, several months passed without any news from him. Gradually, a rumor spread that his ship had sunk in the sea and that he had died.
Hearing this, greed entered Veerbahu’s heart. He thought, “Since Kirtisen is no longer alive, all this wealth now belongs to me.” He opened the chest, took out all the real gold and silver, and replaced them with iron pieces and stones of equal weight. Then he locked the chest again.
Two years later, to everyone’s surprise, Kirtisen returned safely. He had survived a terrible sea storm. When he met Veerbahu, his friend pretended to be delighted and returned the chest to him.
When Kirtisen opened the chest at home, he was shocked. Instead of gold, it was filled with stones. He immediately understood that no one except his trusted friend Veerbahu could have done this.
If Kirtisen had gone directly to the king, he had no proof that the chest originally contained gold. So, without telling anyone, he devised an unusual plan.
He bought two monkeys from the marketplace that looked exactly alike. He named one “Veerbahu” and the other “Kirtisen.” He trained the monkey named Veerbahu to eat only from his hand and treated it with great affection.
A few days later, Kirtisen organized a grand celebration at his home and invited Veerbahu and his family, including his young son.
During the celebration, while everyone was busy talking, Kirtisen secretly hid Veerbahu’s son in a hidden cellar of the mansion and gave him toys and sweets to keep him happy.
When the celebration ended, Veerbahu began searching for his son, but he was nowhere to be found. Veerbahu started panicking and crying.
At that moment, Kirtisen came out pretending to be distressed, holding the monkey named Veerbahu in his hands.
He said, “My friend, forgive me. I witnessed something very strange. Your son was playing in the courtyard when suddenly lightning struck from the sky, and he transformed into this monkey! Look, this monkey even responds to your name.”
Veerbahu became furious and shouted,
“What nonsense! Can a human child ever turn into a monkey? You are lying. You have hidden my son. Let us go to the king’s court immediately!”
The matter was brought before the king.
Veerbahu cried and said, “Your Majesty, Kirtisen has made my son disappear and claims he turned into a monkey. How can such a thing ever happen?”
The king then asked Kirtisen, “What proof do you have for your claim?”
Kirtisen folded his hands and replied,
“Your Majesty, everything is possible in this world. If pure gold kept inside a locked chest can transform into iron pieces and stones within two years, then why can’t a living child transform into a monkey?”
The king was very wise. He immediately understood Kirtisen’s hint. He stared sternly at Veerbahu.
Veerbahu realized that his theft had been exposed. He fell to his knees before the king and confessed his crime. He returned all of Kirtisen’s gold, and Kirtisen safely returned his son.
The story ended, and Betal laughed loudly from King Vikram’s shoulder and said:
“O King Vikram! Tell me, who was the wisest and most ethical person in this story? Was it Kirtisen, who recovered his gold without fighting, or the king, who discovered the truth without any witnesses? Answer correctly, or your head will burst apart!”
King Vikram thought carefully and replied:
“Betal, Kirtisen displayed the greatest wisdom and diplomacy in this story.
The king’s duty was to deliver justice and decide based on the facts presented before him. Kirtisen himself had already made the truth as clear as a mirror.
Kirtisen’s intelligence was superior because, even after discovering his friend’s betrayal, he neither lost his temper nor resorted to violence, nor did he waste the court’s time without evidence. Instead, he followed the principle of ‘tit for tat.’ He used Veerbahu’s attachment to his son to counter his greed. He created a situation in which the thief himself was forced to admit that impossible things—like gold turning into stones or a child turning into a monkey—do not happen naturally but only through human deceit. Without publicly humiliating his friendship, he recovered his wealth.”
“Correct answer, O King!” Betal said. “You have accurately judged Kirtisen’s clever diplomacy. But according to our agreement, you spoke again, so now I must leave!”
And with a loud laugh, Betal flew back into the dark sky and hung once again from the tree. Brave King Vikram tightened his grip on his sword and set out once more to bring Betal back.
