| Why Did Mother Sita Curse the Phalgu River, the Ketaki Flower, and the Cow?

During their exile, Lord Rama, Mother Sita, and Lakshmana were living in Panchavati. At that time, they received the sad news that King Dasharatha had passed away in Ayodhya. Upon hearing this, Lord Rama was deeply saddened.

According to Hindu traditions, performing Shraddha and Pind Daan is essential for the peace of a father's soul. Therefore, Lord Rama decided to perform his father's Shraddha at the sacred pilgrimage site of Gaya, as offering Pind Daan there is considered especially auspicious.

After some time, Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana reached Gaya. They began preparing for the Shraddha rituals according to proper customs. However, some necessary items for the ceremony were still needed, so Lord Rama and Lakshmana went to the town to gather them, while Mother Sita stayed behind.

The Appearance of King Dasharatha's Soul

As time passed, King Dasharatha's soul suddenly appeared before Mother Sita and said:

"Daughter, I am very hungry. The auspicious time for the Shraddha is passing. Please offer me Pind Daan so that my soul may attain peace."

Mother Sita became deeply confused. According to religious traditions, a woman generally does not perform Pind Daan, especially when the son himself is present.

She respectfully said:

"Father, please wait a little while. Lord Rama will return shortly."

But King Dasharatha's soul repeatedly insisted, saying that the sacred time for Shraddha was running out and should not be delayed.

Sita Performs Pind Daan

Faced with a religious dilemma, Mother Sita finally decided that she could not let her father-in-law's soul remain hungry.

She prepared pindas (rice offerings) from the nearby sand and chose four witnesses before performing the ritual:

  • The Phalgu River

  • The Ketaki flower

  • The sacred cow

  • The Banyan tree

Accepting these four as witnesses, Mother Sita offered Pind Daan to King Dasharatha's soul. After accepting the offering, his soul was satisfied and disappeared.

Lord Rama Returns and Asks for Proof

After some time, Lord Rama and Lakshmana returned. Mother Sita narrated the entire incident.

Lord Rama was surprised and said:

"Sita, how is this possible? Pind Daan is usually performed by a son. Is there any proof?"

Mother Sita replied that she had performed the ritual in the presence of four witnesses.

The Witnesses Speak Falsehood

First, the Phalgu River was asked, but it said:

"I did not see anything like that."

Then the Ketaki flower was questioned, but it also denied witnessing the event.

Next, the sacred cow was asked, but it too refused to tell the truth.

Mother Sita became deeply saddened and angry that those she had chosen as witnesses were speaking falsely.

The Banyan Tree Speaks the Truth

Finally, the Banyan tree was asked. Fearlessly, it spoke the truth:

"Lord, Mother Sita is telling the truth. She indeed offered Pind Daan to King Dasharatha."

Mother Sita then invoked King Dasharatha's soul once again. He appeared and personally confirmed to Lord Rama that Sita had offered him Pind Daan.

Hearing this, Lord Rama and Lakshmana were very pleased and praised Mother Sita's righteousness and devotion to duty.

Mother Sita's Curses

Mother Sita was extremely angry with those who had lied.

1. Curse on the Phalgu River

She said:

"You spoke falsely, so you shall remain dry most of the time."

When the Phalgu River begged for forgiveness, Mother Sita softened the curse and said:

"Only during the rainy season will water be visible on your surface. For the rest of the time, your water will flow underground."

This is why, even today, the Phalgu River in Gaya often appears dry on the surface while water flows beneath.

2. Curse on the Ketaki Flower

Mother Sita said:

"You spoke falsely; therefore, you will not be accepted in the worship of Lord Shiva."

When the Ketaki flower sought forgiveness, she said:

"You may be used in the worship of other deities, but not in Shiva worship."

3. Curse on the Sacred Cow

Mother Sita said:

"The mouth with which you spoke falsehood shall be considered impure and will not be worshipped."

When the cow asked for forgiveness, Mother Sita said:

"Even so, your importance in this world will remain supreme, and you will continue to be revered and worshipped."

4. Blessing for the Banyan Tree

Since the Banyan tree spoke the truth, Mother Sita blessed it:

"You shall always remain sacred, live long, and be worshipped by people."

This is why the Banyan tree (Vat Vriksha) is considered extremely sacred in Hinduism and is worshipped during festivals such as Vat Savitri Vrat.
