राजस्थान के एक छोटे से गांव भानपुर में अर्जुन नाम का युवक रहता था। वह मेहनती तो था, लेकिन उसकी एक आदत बहुत खराब थी। वह हमेशा दूसरों की चीजों पर नजर रखता था। किसके पास कितना धन है, किसके खेत बड़े हैं, किसके घर में क्या सामान है — यही बातें उसके मन में घूमती रहती थीं।
उसी समय पास के गांव रामगढ़ में मोहन नाम का युवक रहता था। मोहन साधारण जीवन जीता था, लेकिन बहुत समझदार और संतुष्ट स्वभाव का था। वह हमेशा कहता था, “मनुष्य को पहले खुद को समझना चाहिए, तभी जीवन सफल बनता है।”
एक दिन दोनों गांवों के लोगों ने पास के बड़े मेले में जाने का निश्चय किया। संयोग से अर्जुन और मोहन की मुलाकात रास्ते में हो गई। दोनों साथ-साथ यात्रा करने लगे। रास्ता लंबा था, इसलिए बातचीत भी खूब होने लगी।
अर्जुन मन ही मन सोच रहा था कि मोहन बहुत शांत रहता है, जरूर उसके पास कोई कीमती चीज होगी। उसने तय किया कि वह मौका मिलते ही उसकी पोटली की तलाशी लेगा।
रात को जब दोनों किसी पेड़ के नीचे आराम करते, अर्जुन चोरी-छिपे मोहन की गठरी टटोलता। लेकिन हर बार उसे कुछ नहीं मिलता। सात दिनों तक यात्रा चलती रही और अर्जुन रोज यही कोशिश करता रहा। वह हैरान था कि इतना शांत और निश्चिंत आदमी आखिर खाली हाथ कैसे यात्रा कर सकता है।
सातवें दिन मेला समाप्त हुआ और दोनों को अपने-अपने गांव लौटना था। विदा लेते समय अर्जुन से रहा नहीं गया। उसने मुस्कुराकर कहा,
“भाई मोहन, सच बताना। क्या तुम्हारे पास कोई कीमती चीज नहीं थी? मैंने पूरी यात्रा में कई बार तुम्हारी पोटली देखी, लेकिन कुछ नहीं मिला।”
मोहन हल्के से हंसा और बोला,
“मित्र, मेरे पास एक चांदी का सिक्कों से भरा थैला और एक बहुमूल्य हीरा था।”
अर्जुन चौंक गया।
“फिर मुझे मिला क्यों नहीं?”
मोहन ने शांत स्वर में कहा,
“क्योंकि जब भी मैं बाहर जाता था, मैं वह थैला और हीरा तुम्हारी ही पोटली में रख देता था। तुम हमेशा मेरी गठरी टटोलते रहे, लेकिन कभी अपनी पोटली नहीं देखी।”
यह सुनकर अर्जुन शर्म से सिर झुका कर खड़ा रह गया। उसे अपनी गलती समझ आ गई। वह हमेशा दूसरों में कमी और संपत्ति खोजता रहा, लेकिन कभी अपने भीतर झांकने की कोशिश नहीं की।
मोहन ने जाते-जाते कहा,
“मनुष्य की सबसे बड़ी भूल यही है कि वह दूसरों को परखने में जीवन लगा देता है और खुद को समझने का समय नहीं निकालता। जिस दिन इंसान अपनी कमियां पहचान लेता है, उसी दिन उसका जीवन बदल जाता है।”
उस दिन के बाद अर्जुन पूरी तरह बदल गया। उसने दूसरों से तुलना करना छोड़ दिया और अपने काम, अपने परिवार और अपने जीवन को बेहतर बनाने में लग गया। धीरे-धीरे वह अपने गांव का सबसे सम्मानित व्यक्ति बन गया।

In a small village in Rajasthan called Bhanpur, there lived a young man named Arjun. He was hardworking, but he had a very bad habit. He was always interested in other people's possessions. He constantly thought about who had more money, whose fields were larger, and what valuables others owned.
At the same time, in a nearby village called Ramgarh, there lived a young man named Mohan. Mohan lived a simple life, but he was wise and content by nature. He always said,
“A person must first understand himself; only then can life become truly successful.”
One day, the people from both villages decided to attend a large fair nearby. By chance, Arjun and Mohan met on the way and began traveling together. Since the journey was long, they spent a lot of time talking.
Deep down, Arjun thought that Mohan was unusually calm and peaceful, so he must be carrying something very valuable. He decided that he would search Mohan's bundle whenever he got the opportunity.
Every night, when they rested under a tree, Arjun secretly searched through Mohan's belongings. But each time, he found nothing. The journey continued for seven days, and every day Arjun repeated the same attempt. He was amazed that such a carefree and relaxed man could be traveling empty-handed.
On the seventh day, the fair ended, and it was time for both of them to return to their respective villages. As they were saying goodbye, Arjun could no longer hold back his curiosity.
Smiling, he said,
“Brother Mohan, tell me honestly. Didn't you have anything valuable with you? Throughout the journey, I checked your bundle several times, but I found nothing.”
Mohan smiled gently and replied,
“My friend, I had a bag full of silver coins and a priceless diamond.”
Arjun was shocked.
“Then why didn't I find them?”
Mohan answered calmly,
“Because whenever I stepped away, I would place the bag and the diamond inside your own bundle. You kept searching my belongings, but you never thought to look inside your own.”
Hearing this, Arjun lowered his head in shame. He realized his mistake. He had spent his life searching for faults and wealth in others, but he had never tried to look within himself.
Before leaving, Mohan said,
“The greatest mistake human beings make is spending their entire lives judging others while never taking the time to understand themselves. The day a person recognizes his own shortcomings is the day his life truly begins to change.”
From that day onward, Arjun completely changed. He stopped comparing himself with others and focused on improving his work, his family, and his own life. Gradually, he became the most respected person in his village.
