| The Biggest Mistake of Shukracharya That Made Him Lose an Eye!

English:
In ancient times, a constant struggle for supremacy existed between the Devas (gods) and the Asuras (demons). Shukracharya, the son of Sage Bhrigu, became the most powerful guide of the Asuras due to his intense penance and mastery of the Mrita-Sanjivani Vidya (the knowledge of reviving the dead). Under his guidance, the Asuras conquered heaven. At that time, the demon king Mahabali (Bali)—the son of Virochana and grandson of Prahlada—ruled the Asuras. Bali was a just ruler but also highly ambitious.
When King Bali resolved to complete one hundred Ashwamedha Yajnas (horse sacrifices), Indra feared losing his throne. In response to the prayers of the gods, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin. Vamana arrived at Bali’s sacrificial arena. Impressed by the divine radiance and brilliance of the young Brahmin, King Bali respectfully asked him to request any gift he desired.
Smiling gently, Vamana asked only for three paces of land. Bali considered the request insignificant, but standing in a corner of the sacrificial hall, Shukracharya realized through his divine vision that this was no ordinary boy. Taking Bali aside, he warned him:
However, Bali was a man of his word. He replied that if Lord Vishnu Himself had come to his door as a seeker, it was his greatest fortune.
When Bali began the ritual of making the donation by pouring water from his Kamandalu (water vessel), Shukracharya made one final attempt to stop him. Using his yogic powers, he shrank himself into a tiny form and entered the spout of the Kamandalu. His purpose was to block the flow of water because, without releasing the water, the vow of donation would not be considered complete.
Lord Vamana, being omniscient, immediately understood Shukracharya’s action. He picked up a blade of Kusha grass lying nearby and inserted it into the spout of the Kamandalu to clear the blockage.
As soon as Vamana pushed the Kusha grass into the spout, it pierced Shukracharya’s left eye (some scriptures mention the right eye). In intense pain, Shukracharya cried out and emerged from the vessel. As a result of the incident, he permanently lost one eye.
Lord Vamana assumed a gigantic cosmic form.
With His first step, He measured the entire Earth.
With His second step, He covered the heavens and the sky.
When no place remained for the third step, King Bali humbly offered his own head.
Shukracharya had lost one eye, and his disciple Bali had lost his kingdom. From that day onward, Shukracharya came to be known as “Ekaksha” (the One-Eyed Sage).
The Deeper Symbolism of This Story
One-Sided Vision:
Shukracharya is regarded as the lord of material pleasures and worldly comforts. The loss of one eye symbolizes that excessive attachment to materialism and ego can impair a person’s vision of wisdom and discernment, leaving it incomplete.
The Triumph of Dharma Over Adharma:
This story teaches that no matter how learned or powerful a person may be—as Shukracharya undoubtedly was—if they stand in the way of truth and righteousness, they must eventually face the consequences of their actions.
The Power of Keeping One’s Word:
King Bali’s unwavering commitment to his promise demonstrates that integrity, humility, and devotion are among the highest virtues, even when they require great personal sacrifice.
