जाजलि पौराणिक युग के एक महान ऋषि थे। एक बार उन्होंने कठिन तपस्या करने की ठानी। वे एक वन पहुँचे जो जँगली जानवरों से भरा हुआ था। उसी वन में उन्होंने एक जगह अन्न-जल त्याग कर तपस्या प्रारम्भ की। वे तपस्या में ऐसे लीन हुए कि स्तंभित से हो गए। यहाँ तक कि उन्होंने अपनी प्राण-वायु को भी नियंत्रित कर रोक लिया और अविचल भाव से खड़े तपस्या करते रहे। बहुत समय बीत गया और उनकी लम्बी जटाओं ने उनके शरीर को घेर लिया। आस पास की लताएँ भी उनके चारो ओर लिपट गयीं। उनको एक वृक्ष समझ कर कई पक्षियों ने उनके ऊपर अपना घोंसला बना लिया।
समय बीतता गया और पक्षियों ने कई अंडे दिए जिससे अन्य पक्षियों का जन्म हुआ। महर्षि जाजलि का शरीर एक वृक्ष की भांति बन गया जिसपर कई जीव-जंतुओं ने अपना ठिकाना बना लिया। बहुत काल के बाद जब उनकी तपस्या भंग हुई तो अपनी वो दशा देख कर स्वयं उन्हें भी अपनी इस कठिन तपस्या पर आश्चर्य हुआ। साथ ही साथ उन्हें इस बात का अभिमान भी हो गया कि उनके जैसी कठिन तपस्या कोई और नहीं कर सकता। उसी अभिमानवश उन्होंने आकाश की ओर देखकर कहा "आज मैंने धर्म को पा लिया।"
ईश्वर ने जब देखा कि उनका अनन्य भक्त अभिमान के वश में आ गया है तो उन्होंने उसे सही मार्ग पर लाने की ठानी। उसी समय एक आकाशवाणी हुई - "हे जाजलि! तुमने धर्म को जान लिया है ऐसा सोच कर व्यर्थ अभिमान ना करो। धर्म में तुम काशी के तुलाधार की तुलना नहीं कर सकते। अगर धर्म का वास्तविक ज्ञान चाहते हो तो काशी जाकर तुलाधार से मिलो।" जाजलि ने जब ऐसा सुना तो उन्हें बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ और वे तुलाधार से मिलने काशी की ओर निकल पड़े।
काशी पहुँच कर वे तुलाधार के पास पहुँचे जो अपनी दुकान पर ग्राहकों को सौदे दे रहा था। देखने में वो एक सामान्य मनुष्य लगता था पर उसके चेहरे पर असाधारण तेज था। जाजलि उसे देख कर आश्चर्य में पड़ गए कि सारा दिन ग्राहकों को सामान बेचने वाला तुलाधार किस प्रकार उनसे अधिक धर्म को समझ सकता है? ये सब सोचते हुए वे तुलाधार की दुकान के अंदर पहुँचे।
उन्हें देखते ही तुलाधार अपने स्थान से उठा और उनकी अभ्यर्थना करते हुए उन्हें आसन दिया। जलपान के बाद उसने मृदु स्वर में कहा - "आज तो मेरे भाग्य उदय हो गए कि वो महर्षि जाजलि के दर्शन हुए जिन्होंने इतनी घोर तपस्या कि उनके शरीर पर पक्षियों ने अपना घोसला भी बना लिया और उन्हें पता नहीं चला। ना जाने कितने जीव-जंतुओं को उन्होंने आश्रय दिया।"
तुलाधार को इस प्रकार बोलते देख जाजलि आश्चर्यचकित हो गए। उन्होंने उससे पूछा कि "आप मुझे किस प्रकार जानते हैं।" इसपर तुलाधार ने कहा - "हे महर्षि! मैं सब जनता हूँ। अपनी कठोर तपस्या के गर्व में आकर अपने धर्म को जानने की बात की और आकाशवाणी होने पर मुझसे मिलने यहाँ आये।" अब तक जाजलि को भी पता चल गया कि तुलाधार कोई साधारण व्यक्ति नहीं है। उन्होंने कहा - "हे महात्मा! आकाशवाणी की बात सत्य थी। आप अवश्य मुझे धर्म का वास्तविक रहस्य समझा सकते हैं। आपसे प्रार्थना है कि मुझे ये ज्ञान देकर कृतार्थ करें।"
तब तुलाधार ने हाथ जोड़ते हुए कहा "ये क्या कह दिया आपने? मैं तो एक साधारण मनुष्य हूँ। मैं किस प्रकार आप जैसे महाज्ञानी महात्मा को कोई ज्ञान दे सकता हूँ? पर आप मुझसे मिलने इतनी दूर आये हैं तो सुनिए। धर्म-अधर्म क्या है ये मुझे नहीं पता। मैं तो बस वो व्यव्हार की बात बताता हूँ जिसका मैं अनुसरण करता हूँ। ये कोई गूढ़ रहस्य तो नहीं है।
किसी भी प्राणी से मोह ना करके जीविका चलना ही श्रेष्ठ माना गया है। मैं उसी धर्म के अनुसार जीवन निर्वाह करता हूँ। काठ और घाँस-फूस से मैंने अपना ये घर बनाया है। छोटी बड़ी सभी चीजें तो बेचता हूँ पर मदिरा नहीं बेचता। सब चीजें मैं दूसरों के यहाँ से खरीद कर लाता हूँ, स्वयं नहीं बनाता। सामान बेचने में किसी भी प्रकार के छल-कपट का सहारा नहीं लेता। सामान बेचने में मैं केवल उतना लाभ ही लेता हूँ जिससे मेरा और मेरे परिवार का भरण-पोषण हो सके। अपने ग्राहकों से कभी मैं मूल्य माँगता नहीं हूँ और जो भी वे दे देते हैं उसी में संतुष्ट रहता हूँ।
मैं ना किसी से अनुराग रखता हूँ, ना द्वेष, ना मैत्री, ना विरोध। सम्पूर्ण प्राणियों के लिए मेरे मन में एक सा भाव है। यही मेरा व्रत है। मेरा तराजू सबके लिए समान तौलता है। मैं किसी की निंदा अथवा स्तुति नहीं करता। क्षणभंगुर विषयों की इच्छा नहीं करता। अहिंसा को सबसे बड़ा कर्तव्य मानता हूँ। किसी को देखकर कोई कार्य नहीं करता। जो मेरी प्रशंसा करते हैं और जो मुझे बुरा-भला कहते हैं, दोनों मेरे लिए समान हैं। मुझे कोई प्रिय अथवा अप्रिय नहीं है। मैं एक झोपडी में भी उतने ही सुख से रह सकता हूँ जितने कि किसी महल में। मेरे लिए मिट्टी और स्वर्ण में कोई अंतर नहीं है। धर्म का रहस्य तो अत्यत सूक्ष्म है, किसी के लिए कुछ और धर्म है तो किसी के लिए कुछ और। मेरा धर्म तो यही है किन्तु आपका मुझे ज्ञात नहीं।"
तुलाधार को इस प्रकार कहते सुन महर्षि जाजलि उसके सामने नतमस्तक हो गए। उन्होंने अश्रुपूरित स्वर में कहा - "आज आपने मेरी आँखें खोल दी। यही तो धर्म का वास्तविक रहस्य है। इस लोक में समदर्शी होना ही सबसे बड़ा धर्म है।”
English:
Jajali was a great sage of the Puranic age. Once, he resolved to undertake severe austerities. He went to a forest filled with wild animals and began his penance there, renouncing food and water. He became so deeply absorbed in meditation that he seemed motionless like a pillar. He even controlled and suspended his vital breath, standing immovably in contemplation.
A long time passed. His long matted locks grew around his body, and vines from the surrounding area entwined themselves around him. Mistaking him for a tree, many birds built nests upon him.
As time went on, the birds laid eggs, and new birds were born. Sage Jajali’s body became like a tree on which many creatures made their homes. After a very long period, when his penance finally came to an end, even he was astonished to see his condition and the severity of his austerities. Along with this amazement, pride arose within him. He began to think that no one else could perform such difficult penance. Filled with this pride, he looked toward the sky and declared, “Today I have attained true righteousness (Dharma).”
When God saw that His devoted follower had become overcome by pride, He decided to guide him back to the right path. At that very moment, a divine voice from the heavens proclaimed:
“O Jajali! Do not vainly pride yourself on believing that you have understood Dharma. In matters of righteousness, you cannot compare yourself to Tuladhara of Kashi. If you wish to know the true nature of Dharma, go to Kashi and meet Tuladhara.”
Hearing this, Jajali was greatly surprised and set out for Kashi to meet Tuladhara.
Upon reaching Kashi, he found Tuladhara at his shop, serving customers and selling goods. Outwardly he appeared to be an ordinary man, but his face shone with extraordinary radiance. Jajali was astonished and wondered how a shopkeeper who spent his days selling merchandise could possibly understand Dharma better than he did.
With these thoughts in mind, he entered Tuladhara’s shop.
As soon as Tuladhara saw him, he rose from his seat, respectfully welcomed him, and offered him a place to sit. After refreshments, he spoke gently:
“Today is truly a fortunate day for me. I have been blessed with the sight of the great sage Jajali, whose austerities were so intense that birds built nests upon his body without his even noticing. He provided shelter to countless living beings.”
Hearing Tuladhara speak in this manner, Jajali was astonished. He asked, “How do you know me?”
Tuladhara replied:
“O revered sage, I know everything. In the pride of your severe penance, you proclaimed that you had realized Dharma, and after hearing the heavenly voice, you came here to meet me.”
By now Jajali understood that Tuladhara was no ordinary man. He said:
“O noble one, the heavenly voice spoke the truth. You can surely explain the true secret of Dharma to me. I request that you bless me with this knowledge.”
Folding his hands, Tuladhara replied:
“What are you saying? I am merely an ordinary man. How could I possibly teach someone as wise and learned as you? Yet since you have come such a long way to meet me, listen.
I do not know what is Dharma and what is Adharma. I can only tell you about the way of life that I follow. There is no profound secret in it.
It is considered noble to earn one’s livelihood without attachment to any living being. I live according to that principle. I built this house from wood and grass. I sell all kinds of small and large goods, but I do not sell intoxicating liquor. I purchase all my merchandise from others; I do not manufacture it myself.
I never resort to deceit or dishonesty in business. I take only as much profit as is necessary to support myself and my family. I never demand a particular price from my customers; whatever they choose to give, I accept with contentment.
I harbor neither attachment nor hatred, neither friendship nor enmity toward anyone. I maintain the same attitude toward all living beings. That is my vow. My scales weigh equally for everyone. I neither praise nor criticize anyone. I do not desire fleeting worldly pleasures. I consider nonviolence to be the highest duty.
I do not act merely because of what I see others doing. Those who praise me and those who insult me are alike in my eyes. Nothing is especially dear or hateful to me. I can live just as happily in a hut as in a palace. To me, clay and gold are no different.
The secret of Dharma is extremely subtle. What is Dharma for one person may not be Dharma for another. This is my Dharma, but I do not know yours.”
Hearing these words, Sage Jajali bowed deeply before Tuladhara. With tears in his eyes, he said:
“Today you have opened my eyes. This indeed is the true secret of Dharma. In this world, to regard all beings with equal vision is the highest righteousness.
