How Did Goddess Ganga Come to Earth? This Mystery Will Leave You Astonished.

English:
According to Hindu mythology, the Ganga originally flowed in heaven. There are two major beliefs about her origin:
From Lord Vishnu's Feet
When Lord Vishnu took the Vamana Avatar and measured the universe with his three strides, his toe pierced the heavens, creating an opening in the sky. The stream of water that emerged from that opening became the Ganga. This is why she is also called "Vishnupadi" (the one originating from Vishnu's feet).
From Lord Brahma's Kamandalu
According to another legend, when Lord Brahma washed Lord Vishnu's feet, he preserved the sacred water in his kamandalu (water pot), and from that water, the Ganga was born.
King Sagara and the Salvation of His 60,000 Sons
The main story begins with King Sagara of the Ikshvaku dynasty. King Sagara performed an Ashwamedha Yajna (horse sacrifice ritual). Out of jealousy, Indra stole the sacrificial horse and tied it near the hermitage of Sage Kapila.
King Sagara's 60,000 sons searched for the horse and eventually reached the hermitage. Mistaking the meditating Sage Kapila for the thief, they insulted him. Enraged, the sage reduced all 60,000 princes to ashes with his divine gaze.
Only the sacred waters of the Ganga could grant liberation (moksha) to their souls.
King Bhagiratha Brings Ganga to Earth
King Bhagiratha, a descendant of King Sagara, resolved to bring Ganga to Earth to liberate the souls of his ancestors. He performed severe penance for thousands of years.
Lord Brahma was pleased and appeared before him, but he warned:
"The force of Ganga's descent is so powerful that the Earth will not be able to withstand it and will collapse into the netherworld. Only Lord Shiva can control her immense force."
Bhagiratha then performed penance to please Lord Shiva.
When Ganga descended from heaven with great pride, Lord Shiva trapped her within his matted locks (jata). She remained entangled there for many days. Upon Bhagiratha's prayers, Shiva released one lock of his hair, and Ganga flowed onto Earth in seven streams.
Bhagiratha rode ahead in his chariot, and Ganga followed him.
Along the way, Ganga's powerful current flooded the hermitage of Sage Jahnu. Angered, the sage drank the entire river. After Bhagiratha pleaded for forgiveness, Sage Jahnu released Ganga through his ear. Therefore, another name for Ganga is "Jahnavi."
Finally, Ganga reached Sage Kapila's hermitage and touched the ashes of King Sagara's 60,000 sons, granting them moksha (liberation).
