How to Control the Mind? Shankaracharya’s Simple Yet Powerful Answer.

English:
Once, Shankaracharya was sitting by a riverbank with his disciples. The morning sun was slowly rising. The wind was calm. Everyone was meditating. But one disciple’s face clearly showed restlessness.
Seeing this, Shankaracharya gently asked:
“Today your mind seems very disturbed. What is troubling you?”
The disciple lowered his head and said:
“Swami, whenever I sit for meditation, my mind never stays still. Sometimes devotion, sometimes anger, sometimes desire. Sometimes old memories, sometimes fear of the future. My mind does not listen to me. How do I control it?”
Shankaracharya smiled slightly and said:
“Are you seeing the river?”
“Yes, Swami,” the disciple replied.
“The river is flowing, isn’t it?”
“Yes, it never stops.”
“Can its flow be stopped?”
“That is not possible, Swami.”
“But does the person standing on the riverbank get carried away?”“No, Swami.”
Shankaracharya said softly:
“The mind is like a river. It keeps flowing. Thoughts are its water. You are trying to stop that water, which is why it feels difficult. You are not the water—you are the bank.”
The disciple looked at him in amazement. He continued:
“The mind brings anger, desires, and fear. Let them come. Let them go. Become their witness. Then the mind loses its power over you.”
At that moment, a monkey came there. It kept jumping from tree to tree, never staying in one place for even a moment. Shankaracharya pointed at it and said:
The disciple asked:
“So what should be done with the mind, Swami?”
Shankaracharya picked up a stone from the ground and said:
“This stone is calm because it has no thoughts. But it is not wise.
The mind becomes restless—that is natural. But you must become its master.”
He closed his eyes and said:
“For a moment, close your eyes. Whatever thoughts come to your mind, do not hold onto them. Do not suppress them. Just observe.”
After a few moments, the disciple opened his eyes. His face looked peaceful.
“Swami… thoughts came… but I did not get involved in them. As soon as I observed them, they went away on their own.”
Shankaracharya said:
“This is the secret of the mind.
Do not try to control the mind.
Understand the mind.
The mind is not your enemy.
The mind is a tool.
When it is combined with ignorance, it becomes bondage.
When it is combined with knowledge, it becomes liberation.”
The disciple asked again:
“Swami, will there ever be a day when the mind completely stops?”
Shankaracharya looked at the river and said:
“When a river meets the ocean, it no longer flows separately.
When the mind knows itself, it no longer becomes a wave.”
On that day:
Anger comes, but does not stay.Desire comes, but does not bind.
Fear comes, but does not remain.
There, the mind is no longer a slave—it becomes the king itself.
The disciple bowed his head. That day he learned the way to conquer the mind—not by grabbing it, but by understanding it.
