किसी गाँव में एक धनी सेठ रहता था उसके बंगले के पास एक जूते सिलने वाले गरीब मोची की छोटी सी दुकान थी। उस मोची की एक खास आदत थी कि जो जब भी जूते सिलता तो भगवान के भजन गुनगुनाता रहता था लेकिन सेठ ने कभी उसके भजनों की तरफ ध्यान नहीं दिया ।
एक दिन सेठ व्यापार के सिलसिले में विदेश गया और घर लौटते वक्त उसकी तबियत बहुत ख़राब हो गयी । लेकिन पैसे की कोई कमी तो थी नहीं सो देश विदेशों से डॉक्टर, वैद्य, हकीमों को बुलाया गया लेकिन कोई भी सेठ की बीमारी का इलाज नहीं कर सका । अब सेठ की तबियत दिन प्रतिदिन ख़राब होती जा रही थी। वह चल फिर भी नहीं पाता था|
एक दिन वह घर में अपने बिस्तर पे लेटा था अचानक उसके कान में मोची के भजन गाने की आवाज सुनाई दी, आज मोची के भजन कुछ अच्छे लग लग रहे थे सेठ को, कुछ ही देर में सेठ इतना मंत्रमुग्ध हो गया कि उसे ऐसा लगा जैसे वो साक्षात परमात्मा से मिलन कर रहा हो। मोची के भजन सेठ को उसकी बीमारी से दूर लेते जा रहे थे कुछ देर के लिए सेठ भूल गया कि वह बीमार है उसे अपार आनंद की प्राप्ति हुई ।
कुछ दिन तक यही सिलसिला चलता रहा, अब धीरे धीरे सेठ के स्वास्थ्य में सुधार आने लगा। एक दिन उसने मोची को बुलाया और कहा – मेरी बीमारी का इलाज बड़े बड़े डॉक्टर नहीं कर पाये लेकिन तुम्हारे भजन ने मेरा स्वास्थ्य सुधार दिया ये लो 1000 रुपये इनाम, मोची खुश होते हुए पैसे लेकर चला गया ।
लेकिन उस रात मोची को बिल्कुल नींद नहीं आई वो सारी रात यही सोचता रहा कि इतने सारे पैसों को कहाँ छुपा कर रखूं और इनसे क्या क्या खरीदना है? इसी सोच की वजह से वो इतना परेशान हुआ कि अगले दिन काम पे भी नहीं जा पाया। अब भजन गाना तो जैसे वो भूल ही गया था, मन में खुशी थी पैसे की।
एक दिन मोची सेठ के बंगले में आया और बोला सेठ जी आप अपने ये पैसे वापस रख लीजिये, इस धन की वजह से मेरा धंधा चौपट हो गया, मैं भजन गाना ही भूल गया। इस धन ने तो मेरा परमात्मा से नाता ही तुड़वा दिया। मोची पैसे वापस करके फिर से अपने काम में लग गया ।
सीख:
मानसिक शांति ही असली धन है भौतिक सुख-सुविधाओं से कहीं अधिक मूल्यवान मन की शांति और संतोष है।

In a village, there lived a wealthy merchant. Near his bungalow was a small shop of a poor cobbler who stitched shoes for a living.
One day, the merchant traveled abroad for business. On his way back home, he fell seriously ill. Money was no issue for him, so doctors, physicians, and healers were summoned from different countries. Yet no one could cure him. Day by day, his condition worsened, and eventually he became unable to walk.
One afternoon, while lying on his bed, the merchant suddenly heard the cobbler singing devotional songs outside. For the first time, the hymns sounded beautiful to him. Within moments, he became deeply absorbed in them, feeling as if he were meeting the Divine itself. The cobbler’s singing seemed to take his mind away from his illness. For a while, he forgot that he was sick and experienced immense peace and joy.
This continued for several days, and gradually the merchant’s health began to improve.
The cobbler happily accepted the money and went home.
But that night, he could not sleep at all. He kept thinking, “Where should I hide this money? What all should I buy with it?” These thoughts troubled him so much that the next day he could not even go to work. Singing bhajans had slipped from his mind; all he could think about was the money.
Soon, he stopped working regularly, and his small business began to fail. Meanwhile, the merchant’s illness started returning.
One day, the cobbler came back to the merchant’s bungalow and said, “Sir, please take your money back. Because of this wealth, my work has suffered, and I have forgotten my devotional singing. This money has distanced me from God.”
After returning the money, the cobbler went back to his work and resumed singing bhajans as before.
Lesson
Mental peace is the real wealth.
Inner peace and contentment are far more valuable than material comforts.
Excessive greed becomes a burden.
More money than we need often brings anxiety and stress, stealing our natural happiness.
Greed leads us astray.
It can pull us away from our work, our values, and our spiritual path.
