| The most mysterious devotion story of Vrindavan: Everything changed in one night!

The Divine Bond of Love: The Story of Mai Panjeeri and Madanmohan Lal
In a village near Vrindavan, there lived a simple and innocent elderly woman named Mai ‘Panjeeri’. She rowed the boat of her life by selling milk. She was an unswerving and exclusive devotee of Lord Madanmohan Ji.
Thakur Madanmohan Lal, too, was highly pleased with her. He would often appear in her dreams and ask her for various things to eat. Panjeeri would prepare those very dishes the very same day and offer them to Him. She served Him milk daily without fail; she would always set aside the first portion as an offering for Him, visit the temple every day to catch a glimpse of Him, and deliver the milk.
However, after making her offering, poor Panjeeri did not earn enough money from the remaining milk to even afford two meals a day. Therefore, sometimes on her way to the temple, she would mix a little water from the Yamuna River into the milk. After returning, absorbed in the ecstatic worship of her Lord, she would spend the rest of her time in her humble hut, singing hymns and praises of Baal Gopal (the child Krishna).
Krishna Kanhaiya is always on the lookout for His devotees, constantly performing new divine plays (leelas).
One day, a hurdle disrupted the beautiful rhythm of Panjeeri's life. Along with the water, a tiny fish accidentally got scooped into the milk and made its way into the offering meant for Madanmohan Ji. While pouring the milk, the temple priest (Gosain) noticed it. The priest flew into a rage and rejected the milk. He scolded and reprimanded Panjeeri harshly, banning her entry into the temple.
It felt as if the sky had fallen upon Panjeeri. Weeping and wailing, she reached her hut and cried, "Thakur! I have committed a grave offense, please forgive me. It is true I mix water every day—how can it be hidden from You? But if I don't, how am I to survive? And what was the fault of that poor little fish? It must have received Your grace, which is why it reached all the way to You.
But Lord, You never objected until today; You drank the milk with deep love. Then who is this priest to stop me? And it hurts me even more that Your temple priest hurled such bitter insults at me, yet You remained completely silent. Thakur, if this is my crime, then I vow that if You remain angry and refuse to accept my offering, I too will not consume a single grain of food or drop of water. I shall give up my life right here." Hungry, thirsty, and weeping, evening set in.
Suddenly, a sweet voice fell upon Panjeeri’s ears, "Mai... Oh Mai!" She got up and looked at the door. A remarkably handsome yet exhausted adolescent boy was peering into the hut.
"Who are you, child...?"
"Mother, I am a resident of Braj. I came to have a glimpse of Madanmohan. I am terribly hungry; if I could get something to eat, I would be deeply grateful to you."
A wave of maternal affection surged through Panjeeri’s body. "Is that even something to ask, my son? This home is yours. I know not who you are, but you have cast a spell of magic over me the moment you arrived. Have you come from very far? What will you eat? I shall prepare something quickly."
"Oh Mother, why cook at this hour? Just give me a little milk, I will drink it and sleep."
Hearing the word 'milk', Panjeeri's eyes welled up with tears. Controlling herself, she said, "Son, I have milk, but it is from the morning. Wait a moment, I shall stroke the cow and draw some fresh milk for you right now."
"Oh no, Mother, that will take too long. I have been hungry and thirsty since morning. By mentioning milk, you have made me impatient. Just give me the morning milk, you can milk the cow later."
With tearful eyes, she said, "The milk has a little water mixed in it."
"Oh Mother, are you trying to starve me? Strain the milk and give it to me quickly, or else I shall breathe my last right here."
Panjeeri was astonished by the boy's dramatic words. She hurried away and quickly handed him the milk. After drinking it, the boy's face lit up with joy.
"Mother, what delicious milk! You were just making groundless excuses. Now my eyes are heavy with sleep, I am going to bed." Saying this, he fell asleep right there.
Once Panjeeri was free, the day's exhaustion, grief, and despair enveloped her once more. It was a cold winter night; how could sleep find her on an empty stomach? As the cold intensified, she gently covered the sleeping boy with her own shawl (Odhni).
During the second watch of the night, when her eyes finally closed, she found Lord Madanmohan Lal Ji standing right in front of her.
The Lord spoke, "Mother, are you trying to starve me? You took the priest's words to heart and turned away from me. You haven't put a single grain of food into your own stomach, yet you expect me to drink milk? Today, I came to your house myself and drank your milk. Now, break your fast and eat something. Listen, I wait anxiously for your milk every single day; it is only your milk that truly satisfies me. Never break your daily routine. The priest will not say a word to you now. So what if you mix water in the milk? It only helps digest the milk faster! Now wake up and eat."
Panjeeri startled awake. She looked around, but the boy was nowhere to be found in the hut.
It was indeed her Laala (Krishna) who had graced her cottage! Every fiber of Panjeeri's being became an ocean of ecstatic joy. She quickly prepared two flatbreads (Tikkad), offered them to Madanmohan, and ate them blissfully, tears of gratitude streaming continuously from her eyes.
Shortly after, dawn broke. Panjeeri noticed that the Lord had taken her old shawl with Him, leaving His own divine yellow silken robe (Peetambar) behind in the hut.
To reveal the divine play, Panjeeri arrived at the temple gates carrying the milk and the Lord's yellow robe. She cried out, "Priest Ji! Look at our Laala! He left His precious robe at my hut and brought away my torn shawl. Yesterday morning you drove me away, but my Laala, hungry and thirsty for milk, came knocking at my cottage!"
The priest fell at Panjeeri’s feet, completely humbled. "What have I done between the devotee and God? By wounding the bond of pure devotion, I have committed an unforgivable sin. Mother, please forgive me."
Panjeeri smiled and said, "Priest Ji, do you see the cleverness of our Laala? He deliberately left His divine robe in my hut and brought away my tattered shawl. Protecting the honor of His devotees is, after all, an old habit of His."
The deity smiled gently in return, as if saying, “Oh Mother, how could you know? The absolute bliss found in wrapping oneself in your love-filled shawl can never be matched by any royal silken robe.”
Victory to Bankebihari! Victory to the beloved Sri Bankebihari Lal!
Jai Jai Sri Radhe!
