The Tale of Shri Hanuman and Bali: A Story of Ultimate Power and Humility
The story begins at a time when Bali had received a divine boon from Lord Brahma. The boon granted that whoever stood before Bali to fight him would lose half of their total strength, which would instantly transfer into Bali’s body. This boon rendered Bali completely invincible in every battle.
Both Sugriva and Bali were the aurasa (boon-born) sons of Lord Brahma, and Lord Brahma’s grace always remained upon Bali. Consequently, Bali grew immensely arrogant about his power. His pride reached its absolute peak after his conflict with Ravana. Ravana, who had practically conquered all three worlds, was effortlessly defeated by Bali. Bali tied Ravana to his tail and dragged him around the entire world for six long months. Defeating a warrior of Ravana's stature left Bali with boundless, untamed ego.
He began to consider himself the greatest warrior in the universe, which proved to be his ultimate blunder. Blinded by the intoxication of his own strength, he was roaming the forest one day, ripping out trees and plants as if they were mere straws. He was destroying lush green vegetation and turning lakes of nectar-like water into muddy swamps. Driven by his power, Bali wanted to completely desolate the entire forest. He kept roaring out challenges to the cosmos:
"Is there anyone who dares to fight Bali? Is there anyone born of a mother's milk who can face Bali in battle and defeat him?"
As Bali was violently ravaging the forest with these thunderous roars, it so happened that Lord Hanuman was sitting deep within that very forest, absorbed in meditation and chanting the holy name of Lord Ram.
Bali’s destructive rampage disrupted Hanuman Ji’s chanting. Hanuman Ji approached Bali and gently spoke: "O warrior of warriors, O fragment of Brahma, O Prince Bali (for Bali was the crown prince of Kishkindha at the time). Why are you sacrificing this peaceful forest to your raw strength? Why are you uprooting green trees, crushing fruit-laden branches, and ruining these pure, nectar-like lakes with dirty mud? What will you gain from this? By the boon of your divine father, Lord Brahma, no one can defeat you in battle because whoever fights you loses half their strength to you. Therefore, O vanara prince, calm the arrogance of your power and chant the name of Lord Ram. It will keep you grounded, and chanting the divine name of Ram will elevate your life both in this world and the afterlife."
Upon hearing this, Bali, completely blinded by his ego, sneered at Hanuman Ji: "You insignificant monkey! You dare lecture me? You dare lecture Prince Bali, who has bitten dust to every warrior in the world, and whose single roar can shatter the mightiest mountains? Go, you absolute nonentity! Go and do your worship of your 'Ram' or whatever. And who even is this Ram you speak of? You are the only one who seems to know him; I have never heard his name from anyone else's mouth. And you have the audacity to teach me to chant his name?"
Hanuman Ji calmly replied: "Lord Shri Ram is the master of all three worlds, and his glory is boundless. He is an ocean of mercy; even a single drop of his grace can ferry a soul across the endless ocean of worldly existence."
Bali scoffed: "If this Ram is so great, call him here! Let me also see how much strength is in his arms."
Hearing such bitter, disrespectful words against Lord Ram was more than enough to provoke Hanuman Ji's wrath.
Hanuman Ji thundered: "O Bali, blinded by your own pride! You think you can defeat Lord Ram in battle? First, try defeating this insignificant servant of his!"
Bali replied: "Fine then! Tomorrow, right in the center of the city square, it will be just you and me in open combat."
Hanuman Ji accepted Bali's terms. Bali returned to the city and had it announced by royal decree that a grand duel between Hanuman and Bali would take place the following day.
The next day, at the designated hour, just as Hanuman Ji was about to leave his abode for the battlefield, Lord Brahma suddenly manifested before him. Hanuman Ji bowed reverently to the Creator of the Universe and said: "O Father of the Universe, your arrival at the humble dwelling of a vanara like me must surely signify something extraordinary."
Lord Brahma spoke: "O son of Anjani, O manifestation of Lord Shiva, O son of the Wind God, O supreme devotee of Ram! Please forgive my son Bali for his reckless insolence, and do not go to this war."
Hanuman Ji replied: "O Lord! If Bali had insulted me personally, I would have forgiven him without a thought. But he has spoken blasphemy against my worshipful Lord, Shri Ram, which I can never tolerate. Furthermore, he has openly challenged me to a duel. I must accept it. Otherwise, the entire world will say that Hanuman is a coward who backed down from a fight just because a powerful warrior challenged him."
Seeing his resolve, Lord Brahma thought for a moment and said: "Very well, Hanuman. But do not take your entire, boundless strength with you into the arena. Take only a tenth (1/10th) of your power. Deposit the remaining ninety percent at the lotus feet of your Lord Ram through your yogic powers. Once you return from the duel, you may reclaim it."
Out of sheer respect for Lord Brahma, Hanuman Ji did exactly as advised and left for the battlefield. Meanwhile, Bali had converted a massive area in the city center into an arena. Anxious to fight, Bali was pacing around and repeatedly roaring Hanuman's name. The entire city had gathered to witness this historic clash between two colossal titans.
Instantly, the mechanics of the boon took effect, and half of Hanuman Ji's current strength transferred into Bali. But the moment even a fraction of Hanuman's cosmic power entered Bali's body, terrifying changes occurred. An unstoppable deluge of raw energy flooded Bali's veins. His muscles began to swell uncontrollably under the crushing weight of the power; his skin began to tear, and blood started oozing out from his pores. Bali gasped for air, completely unable to comprehend what was happening to his body.
Right at that horrific moment, Lord Brahma appeared beside him and shouted: "Son! Run away from here as fast and as far as your legs can carry you!"
Terrified and unable to process anything else, Bali simply listened to his father's desperate warning and bolted at an unbelievable speed.
After sprinting for more than a hundred miles, Bali collapsed out of sheer exhaustion. When he finally regained consciousness a short while later, he saw Lord Brahma standing before him. He wept and asked: "Father, what was that? Before the fight could even begin, my body swelled up to the point of exploding! Then you suddenly appeared and told me to run for my life. I don't understand anything!"
Lord Brahma looked at him and asked: "Son, when Hanuman stepped in and his half-strength entered you, how did you feel?"
Bali replied: "I felt as though oceans of absolute cosmic power were crashing inside my body. I felt like no one in the universe could stand against my radiance. But at the exact same time, it felt like my physical body would violently burst apart into pieces."
Lord Brahma sighed and said: "O Bali, I had specifically commanded Hanuman to bring only a tiny tenth fraction of his actual power to the fight. And yet, you could not even handle half of that tenth fraction! Think about it—if Hanuman had walked into that arena with his full, uninhibited strength, his half-power would have vaporized you the very second he stepped out of his house. You would have exploded into dust."
Hearing this, Bali broke into a cold, terrifying sweat. After a long silence, he asked in awe: "My Lord, if Hanuman possesses such unfathomable power, where does he even use it?"
Lord Brahma replied: "Hanuman can never use his full strength, because this entire creation does not possess the capacity to endure even a tenth of his ultimate power."
Upon hearing these words, Bali's ego dissolved completely. He turned in the direction of Hanuman Ji and prostrated flat on the ground (Dandavat Pranam). With deep remorse, he wept: "Forgive me! There is Hanuman Ji, who possesses infinite, limitless power, yet remains completely serene, quietly singing the praises of Lord Ram. And then there is me—I am not even equal to a single strand of his hair, yet I had the audacity to challenge him. Please forgive my ignorance."
Filled with deep self-reproach, Bali surrendered his heart to Lord Ram, and later in life, it was through Lord Ram himself that he attained his ultimate liberation (Moksha).
