प्रकृत्य ऋषि का रोज का नियम था कि वह नगर से दूर जंगलों में स्थित शिव मन्दिर में भगवान् शिव की पूजा में लीन रहते थे। कई वर्षो से यह उनका अखण्ड नियम था।
उसी जंगल में एक नास्तिक डाकू अस्थिमाल का भी डेरा था। अस्थिमाल का भय आसपास के क्षेत्र में व्याप्त था। अस्थिमाल बड़ा नास्तिक था। वह मन्दिरों में भी चोरी-डाका से नहीं चूकता था।
एक दिन अस्थिमाल की नजर प्रकृत्य ऋषि पर पड़ी। उसने सोचा यह ऋषि जंगल में छुपे मन्दिर में पूजा करता है, हो न हो इसने मन्दिर में काफी माल छुपाकर रखा होगा। आज इसे ही लूटते हैं।
अस्थिमाल ने प्रकृत्य ऋषि से कहा कि जितना भी धन छुपाकर रखा हो चुपचाप मेरे हवाले कर दो। ऋषि उसे देखकर तनिक भी विचलित हुए बिना बोले- कैसा धन ? मैं तो यहाँ बिना किसी लोभ के पूजा को चला आता हूँ।
डाकू को उनकी बातों पर विश्वास नहीं हुआ। उसने क्रोध में ऋषि प्रकृत्य को जोर से धक्का मारा। ऋषि ठोकर खाकर शिवलिंग के पास जाकर गिरे और उनका सिर फट गया। रक्त की धारा फूट पड़ी।
इसी बीच आश्चर्य ये हुआ कि ऋषि प्रकृत्य के गिरने के फलस्वरूप शिवालय की छत से सोने की कुछ मोहरें अस्थिमाल के सामने गिरीं। अस्थिमाल अट्टहास करते हुए बोला तू ऋषि होकर झूठ बोलता है। झूठे ब्राह्मण तू तो कहता था कि यहाँ कोई धन नहीं फिर ये सोने के सिक्के कहाँ से गिरे। अब अगर तूने मुझे सारे धन का पता नहीं बताया तो मैं यहीं पटक-पटकर तेरे प्राण ले लूँगा।
प्रकृत्य ऋषि करुणा में भरकर दुखी मन से बोले- हे शिवजी मैंने पूरा जीवन आपकी सेवा पूजा में समर्पित कर दिया फिर ये कैसी विपत्ति आन पड़ी ? प्रभो मेरी रक्षा करें। जब भक्त सच्चे मन से पुकारे तो भोलेनाथ क्यों न आते।
महेश्वर तत्क्षण प्रकट हुए और ऋषि को कहा कि इस होनी के पीछे का कारण मैं तुम्हें बताता हूँ। यह डाकू पूर्वजन्म में एक ब्राह्मण ही था इसने कई कल्पों तक मेरी भक्ति की। परन्तु इससे प्रदोष के दिन एक भूल हो गई। यह पूरा दिन निराहार रहकर मेरी भक्ति करता रहा। दोपहर में जब इसे प्यास लगी तो यह जल पीने के लिए पास के ही एक सरोवर तक पहुँचा। संयोग से एक गाय का बछड़ा भी दिन भर का प्यासा वहीं पानी पीने आया। तब इसने उस बछड़े को कोहनी मारकर भगा दिया और स्वयं जल पीया। इसी कारण इस जन्म में यह डाकू हुआ।
तुम पूर्वजन्म में मछुआरे थे। उसी सरोवर से मछलियाँ पकड़कर उन्हें बेचकर अपना जीवन यापन करते थे। जब तुमने उस छोटे बछड़े को निर्जल परेशान देखा तो अपने पात्र में उसके लिए थोड़ा जल लेकर आए। उस पुण्य के कारण तुम्हें यह कुल प्राप्त हुआ।
तुमने पिछले जन्म में अनगिनत मत्स्यों का आखेट किया जिसके कारण आज का दिन तुम्हारी मृत्यु के लिए तय था पर इस जन्म में तुम्हारे संचित पुण्यों के कारण तुम्हें मृत्यु स्पर्श नहीं कर पायी और सिर्फ यह घाव देकर लौट गई।
ईश्वर वह नहीं करते जो हमें अच्छा लगता है, ईश्वर वह करते हैं जो हमारे लिए सचमुच अच्छा है। यदि आपके अच्छे कार्यों के परिणाम स्वरूप भी आपको कोई कष्ट प्राप्त हो रहा है तो समझिए कि इस तरह ईश्वर ने आपके बड़े कष्ट हर लिए।
हमारी दृष्टि सीमित है परन्तु ईश्वर तो लोक-परलोक सब देखते हैं, सबका हिसाब रखते हैं। हमारा वर्तमान, भूत और भविष्य सभी को जोड़कर हमें वही प्रदान करते हैं जो हमारे लिए उचित है।

It was the unwavering daily routine of Sage Prakratya to remain deeply absorbed in the worship of Lord Shiva at a temple located in the dense forests, far away from the city. For many years, this had been his unbroken spiritual practice.
In that very same forest, an atheist dacoit named Asthimal had set up his camp. A reign of terror under Asthimal prevailed across the surrounding regions. Asthimal was a staunch atheist; he never hesitated to steal from or rob even holy temples.
One day, Asthimal's eyes fell upon Sage Prakratya. He thought to himself, "This sage worships in a temple hidden deep within the jungle. Without a doubt, he must have concealed a vast amount of wealth inside. Today, I will rob him."
Asthimal confronted Sage Prakratya and demanded, "Hand over whatever wealth you have hidden here silently." Looking at him without a single trace of fear or agitation, the sage replied, "What wealth? I come here daily to worship without any greed or material desire."
The dacoit did not believe a word. In a fit of rage, he forcefully shoved Sage Prakratya. The sage stumbled and fell violently near the Shivling, cutting his head open. A stream of blood began to flow.
In the midst of this, a miraculous thing happened. As a result of Sage Prakratya’s fall, a few gold coins fell from the ceiling of the Shiva temple right in front of Asthimal. Laughing maniacally, Asthimal mocked, "You call yourself a sage, yet you lie? You deceitful Brahmin, you claimed there was no wealth here, so where did these gold coins fall from? Now, if you do not reveal the location of the rest of the treasure, I will beat you to death right here."
Filled with deep sorrow and compassion, Sage Prakratya prayed with a heavy heart, "O Lord Shiva, I dedicated my entire life to your service and worship. Why has such a calamity befallen me? O Lord, please protect me." When a devotee cries out with a pure heart, how could Bholenath not appear?
Maheshwar (Lord Shiva) manifested instantly and said to the sage, "I shall reveal to you the underlying cause behind this destiny. In his previous birth, this dacoit was a Brahmin who worshipped me devotedly for many cosmic cycles (Kalpas). However, he committed a grave error on the day of Pradosh. He fasted the entire day and immersed himself in my devotion. In the afternoon, when he felt thirsty, he went to a nearby lake to drink water. Coincidentally, a young calf, thirsty from the day's heat, also came there to drink water. At that moment, this man nudged the calf away brutally with his elbow and drank the water himself. Because of that single sin, he became a dacoit in this lifetime."
Lord Shiva continued, "In your previous birth, you were a fisherman. You earned your livelihood by catching and selling fish from that very same lake. When you saw that little calf distressed and without water, you brought some water for it in your own vessel. Because of that immense virtue (Punya), you were blessed with a righteous lineage in this birth."
"On the other hand, you hunted countless fish in your past life, because of which this exact day was destined to be the day of your death. But owing to the accumulated virtues of your current righteous life, death could not touch you. It merely left after inflicting this minor wound."
God does not do what merely feels pleasing to us; God does what is truly best for us. If you face suffering despite doing good deeds, understand that in this manner, God has mitigated a catastrophic misfortune into a minor trouble.
