English:
Master, I have read so many books... but I have forgotten most of them. What then is the use of reading?"
This was the question of a curious disciple to his master. The master did not answer. He simply looked at him in silence.
A few days later, while they were sitting by a riverbank, the old man suddenly said: "I am thirsty. Bring me some water... but use that old sieve lying on the ground."
The disciple looked bewildered. It was an absurd request. How could anyone bring water in a sieve full of holes?
But he did not dare to argue.
Exhausted and frustrated, he threw the sieve at the master's feet and said:
"Forgive me. I failed. It was impossible."
The master looked at him affectionately and said:
"You did not fail. Look at the sieve."
The disciple looked down... and realized something. That old, dark, dirty sieve was now shining clean. The water, though it never stayed, had washed over it repeatedly until it began to glow.
The master continued:
"This is exactly what reading does. It doesn't matter if you don't remember every single detail. It doesn't matter if knowledge slips away like water through a sieve...
Because as you read, your mind gets refreshed.
Your soul is renewed.
Your thoughts get oxygenated. And even if you don't notice it immediately, you are changing from the inside out."
This is the true purpose of reading.
It is not to fill your memory...
But to purify and enrich your soul.
