एक समय की बात है, एक कृष्ण-भक्त महात्मा अपनी छोटी सी कुटिया में अकेले रहते थे। उनकी भक्ति ऐसी थी कि वे हर वस्तु में अपने 'लल्ला' (श्री कृष्ण) के ही दर्शन करते थे। उनके पास संपत्ति के नाम पर केवल एक कान्हा की प्रतिमा और ठाकुर जी के भोग के लिए थोडा सा माखन-मिश्री रहता था।
चोर ने अंधेरे में हाथ-पाँव मारे, पर उसे कुछ न मिला। अंत में उसे कोने में एक मिट्टी की मटकी दिखी। उसने सोचा कि इसमें शायद मुहरें होंगी। जैसे ही उसने मटकी उठाई, महात्मा ने प्रेम से पुकारा— "अरे! कन्हैया तुम आ गए?"
चोर डर गया! उसे लगा कि महात्मा जाग गए हैं और अब शोर मचाएंगे। वह मटकी लेकर बाहर की तरफ भागा। मटकी में मुहरें नहीं, बल्कि ताजा माखन था। भागते समय चोर का पैर फिसला और थोड़ी सी मिश्री ज़मीन पर गिर गई।
महात्मा कुटिया से बाहर निकले, पर वे लाठी लेकर नहीं, बल्कि हाथ में मिश्री की कटोरी लेकर दौड़े। वे चिल्ला रहे थे—
"अरे ओ लाला! रुक तो सही! सूखा माखन गले में अटक जाएगा। यह मिश्री तो लेता जा, बिना मिश्री के माखन में स्वाद नहीं आएगा। तूने तो आधी रात को आने का नियम ही बना लिया है!"
चोर चकित रह गया। वह भागता रहा और महात्मा उसके पीछे भागते रहे। अंत में चोर एक पेड़ के नीचे थककर रुक गया। महात्मा उसके पास पहुँचे, हाफते हुए उसकी हथेली में मिश्री रखी और बोले:
"मेरे कान्हा, तू चोरी क्यों करता है? जो तेरा है, उसे माँग लिया कर। आज तूने माखन खाया, तो मेरा हृदय तृप्त हो गया, पर तू भाग क्यों रहा था?"
चोर ने जब महात्मा की आँखों में देखा, तो उसे वहाँ डांट या नफरत नहीं, बल्कि एक अगाध प्रेम दिखा। उसकी आँखों से आँसू बहने लगे। उसने महात्मा के पैर पकड़ लिए और बोला, "महाराज, मैं भगवान नहीं, मैं तो एक नीच चोर हूँ। मैं तो आपकी मटकी चुराने आया था।"
महात्मा मुस्कुराए और बोले, "चोरी तो मेरा कृष्ण भी करता था। पर वह माखन के साथ-साथ लोगों के 'मन' भी चुरा लेता था। तूने आज मेरा माखन चुराया है, तो चल आज से एक काम कर— तू चोरी तो कर, पर अब केवल नाम की चोरी कर।"
चोर ने पूछा, "महाराज, नाम की चोरी कैसे होती है?"
महात्मा ने कहा:
"जैसे तू छिपकर दूसरों के घर घुसता है, वैसे ही अब तू एकांत में बैठकर छिपकर 'गोविंद' के नाम को अपने हृदय में बसा। दुनिया को पता भी न चले और तू प्रभु के नाम का खजाना लूट ले। याद रख, जब तू अगली बार चोरी करने जाए, तो बस यह ध्यान रखना कि तेरा कन्हैया तुझे देख रहा है। यदि उसके सामने तू चोरी कर सके, तो शौक से करना।"
भक्त के लिए चोर भी भगवान का ही रूप है।
यह महसूस करना कि "प्रभु देख रहे हैं", इंसान को गलत रास्ते पर जाने से रोक देता है।
कृष्ण भक्ति की यह धारा हमें सिखाती है कि किसी को अपराधी मानकर त्यागने से बेहतर है, उसे प्रेम देकर सुधार देना।

Once upon a time, a saintly devotee of Lord Krishna lived alone in his small, humble hut. His devotion was so pure and profound that he beheld his beloved 'Lalla' (child Krishna) in everything and everyone. His only worldly possessions were a small idol of Kanha and a tiny portion of butter and sugar candy (Makhan-Mishri) meant for the Lord's daily food offering.
One night, a thief entered his hut with the hope of finding expensive utensils or the hidden savings of the ascetic. The saint was awake at the time, but he did not open his eyes; he simply realized that someone had entered his dwelling.
The thief searched frantically in the dark but found absolutely nothing. Finally, he spotted an earthen pot sitting in a corner. Thinking it might contain gold coins, he lifted it. At that exact moment, the saint called out with immense affection— "Oh! Kannyha, you have arrived?"
The thief was terrified! Believing the saint was awake and would now scream for help, he bolted toward the exit with the pot. However, the pot contained fresh butter instead of gold coins. While running, the thief tripped, and a little bit of sugar candy spilled onto the ground.
The saint stepped out of his hut—not with a wooden staff to attack, but running with a bowl of sugar candy in his hand. He shouted affectionately—
"Oh, my dear Lala! Wait a moment! The plain butter will get stuck in your throat. Please take this sugar candy with you; without it, the butter will not taste sweet. You have truly made it a habit to visit me in the middle of the night!"
The thief was completely astonished. He kept running, and the saint kept chasing after him. Exhausted, the thief finally stopped under a tree. The saint caught up to him, panting heavily, placed the sugar candy into the thief's palm, and said:
"My Kanha, why do you resort to stealing? Just ask for whatever is yours. Seeing you eat the butter today has deeply satisfied my heart, but why were you running away from me?"
When the thief looked into the saint’s eyes, he saw no anger or hatred—only an ocean of unconditional love. Tears began to stream down his face. He fell at the saint's feet and cried, "Maharaj (Holy Master), I am not God. I am a wretched thief. I came here tonight to steal your pot."
The saint smiled gently and replied, "My Krishna used to steal too. But along with butter, He also used to steal people's hearts. Since you have stolen my butter today, do one thing from now on—continue to steal, but now, steal only the Divine Name."
Perplexed, the thief asked, "Maharaj, how does one steal a name?"
The saint explained:
"Just as you stealthily break into other people's homes, sit alone in complete solitude now and secretly settle the name of 'Govinda' into your heart. Let the world know nothing about it, while you quietly plunder the infinite treasure of the Lord's name. Remember, the next time you go out to commit a theft, just keep in mind that your Kanha is watching you. If you can still manage to steal right in front of Him, then go ahead gladly."
From that day on, the thief was entirely transformed. He did not give up stealing, but he now began to steal the 'Divine Chanting' (Naam-Sankirtan). He realized that when God is constantly with us, there is simply no room left for evil in our lives.
For a true devotee, even a thief is a manifestation of the Supreme Divine.
The profound realization that "the Lord is watching" naturally restrains a human being from stepping onto the wrong path.
This continuous stream of Krishna devotion teaches us that rather than abandoning someone by labeling them a criminal, it is far greater to transform them entirely through the power of love.
