A Father, A Few Marks, and a Life-Changing Lesson.

🍁 The Stains of Regret Printed on the Walls 🍁
My father had grown quite old. His steps were no longer as steady and firm as they used to be, so he would often lean against the walls for support while walking around the house. Wherever his hands pressed, the color of the walls faded slightly, leaving faint finger marks behind.
In the beginning, I didn't pay much attention to it, but my wife absolutely disliked it. She would frequently complain that the walls were looking filthy and that it left a bad impression in front of guests. One day, Father had a severe headache and had applied oil to his hair. Walking along while holding onto the walls in that state, he left distinct oily stains behind. Seeing this, my wife lost her temper and lashed out at me. At that moment, I too was fueled by anger; without a second thought, I raised my voice at my father, telling him not to touch the walls and to walk more carefully.
My words deeply wounded his heart. The sorrow on his face was crystal clear to see, but my ego was so massive at the time that I could not muster the courage to apologize to him. After that day, Father almost completely stopped touching the walls. He would try to walk slowly without support, but his body was no longer capable enough. One day, he suddenly lost his balance and fell. Following that fall, he became permanently bedridden and, within a few days, left us forever. After his departure, an immense emptiness and a sense of guilt settled into my heart, gnawing at my conscience every single moment.
I would constantly think, if only I hadn't scolded him that day... if only I had chosen to become his support instead. A few months later, we decided to get the house repainted. As the painters began prepping and cleaning the walls, my young son, who loved his grandfather dearly, suddenly walked up to them and said, "Please don't erase these marks, these are my grandfather's handprints." The painter listened to him with great attention and said with a gentle smile that they wouldn't wipe the marks away; instead, they would craft a beautiful design around them to preserve them as a lasting memory. True to his word, within a few days, beautiful frames and artistic patterns around those prints transformed the walls completely. The very walls that once looked dirty to me had now turned into my most precious memories.
Time rolled on, and gradually, I too began to age. My steps were no longer as steady either, and I started feeling the need for support while walking. One day, remembering the harsh words I had spoken to my father, I tried to restrain myself from touching the wall. Just then, my son came running to me, held my hand, and said, "Father, please hold onto the wall, otherwise you might fall." At that very moment, my little granddaughter walked up and lovingly offered her shoulder so I could rest my hand upon it.
At that instant, tears began to stream down my face as the memories of my father rushed back. A sharp pang of regret pierced my heart—if only I had shown him the same love and patience, perhaps he would have stayed with us for a few more days. A little while later, my granddaughter brought over her drawing book and showed me a sketch. It was a drawing of those very handprints on the wall that had once been a source of annoyance to me, but had now become the greatest lesson of my life.
Beneath the drawing, she had written: "I wish every child would respect and love their elders this way." Reading those words, my heart overflowed with emotion, and I wept silently, begging my father for forgiveness. That day, I truly understood that time stops for no one, and one day we must all grow old. Therefore, it is vital that we respect our elders, understand their feelings, and pass down these same values to our children—because what we do to our parents today is exactly what our children will repeat with us tomorrow.
