जब महाभारत का युद्ध चल रहा था और अर्जुन-कर्ण के बीच युद्ध चल रहा था, तब कर्ण के रथ का पहिया जमीन में धंस गया। तब कर्ण ने भीष्म पितामह के बनाएं नियमों की बात करते हुए अर्जुन से कहा, "हे अर्जुन, जब तक मैं रथ का पहिया नहीं निकाल लेता, तब तक तुम मुझ पर आक्रमण नहीं करोगे।" यह सुनकर अर्जुन रुक गया। तब भगवान कृष्ण ने कहा, ‘हे अर्जुन, तुम क्यों रुके? तीर मारो।’ जब अर्जुन ने कहा कि वह युद्ध के खिलाफ है। तब भगवान कृष्ण ने याद दिलाया कि अभिमन्यु एक अकेले योद्धा से लड़ रहा था, तब युद्ध के नियम ज्ञात नहीं थे। भरी सभा में जब द्रोपदी से अपशब्द कहे गये तो नियमों का उल्लंघन नहीं हुआ?
इन शब्दों को सुनकर अर्जुन क्रोधित हो गए और उन्होंने कर्ण पर भगवान शिवजी का दिया हुआ अस्त्र चला दिया। अर्जुन के इस बाण से कर्ण मृत्यु के समीप पहुँच गया। जब कर्ण अपनी मृत्यु की प्रतीक्षा कर रहा था तब भगवान कृष्ण ने कर्ण की परीक्षा लेने का विचार किया। भगवान कृष्ण ने एक ब्राह्मण का रूप धारण किया और कहा, ‘हे कर्ण, मेरी बेटी की शादी हो रही है और मेरे पास उसे देने के लिए सोना नहीं है, इसलिए मुझे सोना दो।’ तब कर्ण ने कहा कि मेरे पास कुछ नहीं है। मैं तुम्हें क्या दान कर सकता हूं। तब ब्राह्मण ने कहा कि तुम्हारे पास सोने का दांत है। वह दान कर दो। कर्ण ने कहा कि मुझे एक पत्थर से मारो और मेरा दांत निकाल दो। ब्राह्मण ने ऐसा करने से मनाकर दिया और कहा कि दान तो खुद ही करना पड़ता है।
इसके बाद कर्ण ने अपने समीप पड़े पत्थर को उठाया और उससे अपना दांत तोड़कर ब्राह्मण को दे दिया। इस पर ब्राह्मण ने कहा कि यह दांत को गंदा हो गया उसे साफ करो। इस पर कर्ण ने अपने धनुष से धरती पर बाण चलाया तो वहां से गंगा की तेज जलधारा निकल पड़ी। उससे दांत धोकर कर्ण ने कहा अब तो ये शुद्ध हो गया। इसके बाद भगवान कृष्ण अपने वास्तविक रूप में प्रकट हुए। श्रीकृष्ण ने तब कर्ण से कहा था कि ‘‘तुम्हारी यह बाण गंगा युग युगों तक तुम्हारा गुणगान करती रहेगी।‘‘ घायल कर्ण को श्रीकृष्ण ने आशीर्वाद दिया था कि ”जब तक सूर्य, चन्द्र, तारे और पृथ्वी रहेंगे, तुम्हारी दानवीरता का गुणगान तीनों लोकों में किया जाएगा। संसार में तुम्हारे समान महान दानवीर न तो हुआ है और न कभी होगा।"
श्रीकृष्ण ने कर्ण से कहा कि वह उनसे कोई भी वरदान मांग़ सकते हैं। कर्ण ने कृष्णजी से कहा कि एक निर्धन सूत पुत्र होने के कारण उसके साथ बहुत छल हुए हैं। अगली बार जब कृष्णजी धरती पर आएं तो वह पिछड़े वर्ग के लोगों के जीवन को सुधारने के लिए प्रयत्न करें। इसके साथ कर्ण ने दो और वरदान मांगे। दूसरे वरदान के रूप में कर्ण ने यह मांगा कि अगले जन्म में कृष्णजी उन्हीं के राज्य में जन्म लें और तीसरे वरदान में उन्होंने श्रीकृष्ण से कहा कि उनका अंतिम संस्कार एक कुंवारी भूमि पर करना।
मान्यता है कि भगवान को पूरी पृथ्वी पर भूमि का कोई ऐसा टुकड़ा नहीं मिला, जहां पहले किसी व्यक्ति का दाह संस्कार न हुआ हो. काफी तलाशने के बाद उन्हें केवल सूरत शहर में ताप्ती नदी के किनारे एक इंच जमीन ही ऐसी मिली, जहां पहले कभी किसी का शवदाह नहीं हुआ था. यहां एक इंच भूमि पर शव रखना असंभव था. ऐसे में भगवान कृष्ण ने उस भूमि के टुकड़े पर पहले एक बाण रखा. इसके बाद उस पर कर्ण के शरीर को रखकर दाह संस्कार किया. इस जगह को अब लोग 'तुल्सीबड़ी मंदिर' के रूप में पहचानते हैं.
तापी नदी के किनारे कर्ण का शवदाह किए जाने के पश्चात् पांडवों ने जब कुंवारी भूमि होने पर शंका जताई तो श्रीकृष्णजी ने कर्ण को प्रकट करके उससे आकाशवाणी द्वारा कहलाया था कि वो सूर्य के पुत्र हैं और अश्विनी और कुमार उनके भाई हैं। तापी उनकी बहन हैं। उनका अग्निदाह कुंवारी भूमि पर ही किया गया है। पांडवों ने कहा हमें तो पता चल गया परंतु आने वाले युगों को कैसे पता चलेगा? तब भगवान कृष्ण ने कहा कि यहां पर तीन पत्रों का वट वृ़क्ष होगा जो ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, और महेश का प्रतीक रूप होगा।
यहां तीन पत्ता बड़ का एक मंदिर है. यहां बरगद का एक पेड़ है जिसके बारे में कहा जाता है कि यह हजारों साल पुराना है, लेकिन इस पर आज तक सिर्फ 3 पत्ते ही आए हैं जो आज भी हरे-भरे हैं.

When the Mahabharata war was underway and a fierce battle was raging between Arjun and Karna, the wheel of Karna’s chariot sank deep into the ground. Evoking the rules of warfare established by Bhishma Pitamah, Karna said to Arjun, "O Arjun! You shall not attack me until I have pulled my chariot wheel out of the ground." Hearing this, Arjun lowered his bow and stopped.
Then, Lord Krishna intervened and said, "O Arjun, why have you stopped? Shoot your arrow!" When Arjun replied that attacking an unarmed warrior goes against the rules of war, Lord Krishna reminded him of the past: "When Abhimanyu was fighting alone against multiple warriors, were the rules of war remembered then? When Draupadi was humiliated and insulted with abusive words in the full assembly, was that not a violation of the rules?"
Hearing these words, Arjun was filled with rage. He unleashed a celestial weapon—blessed upon him by Lord Shiva—at Karna. This arrow struck Karna, bringing him to the very brink of death.
The Final Test of the Ultimate Donor (Danveer)
As Karna lay on the battlefield awaiting his death, Lord Krishna decided to put his legendary generosity to one final test. Assuming the guise of a poor Brahmin, Lord Krishna approached him and said, "O Karna, my daughter is getting married, and I do not have any gold to give her. Therefore, please donate some gold to me." Karna replied helplessly, "I have nothing left with me. What can I possibly donate to you now?"
The Brahmin pointed out, "You have a gold tooth. Donate that to me." Karna said, "Take a stone, strike me, and remove the tooth." However, the Brahmin refused, stating, "A donation must be given by one's own hands."
Without hesitation, Karna picked up a stone lying nearby, smashed his own tooth, and presented it to the Brahmin. The Brahmin then objected, saying, "This tooth has become dirty with blood. Clean it first." At this, Karna picked up his bow and shot an arrow into the earth, instantly releasing a powerful stream of the holy River Ganga. After washing the tooth in the sacred water, Karna said, "Now, it is purified."
The Blessings and the Three Boons
Witnessing this unparalleled act of sacrifice, Lord Krishna revealed his true, divine form. He said to Karna, "This Baan Ganga (Ganga unleashed by the arrow) will sing praises of your virtue for ages to come." Blessing the wounded warrior, Shri Krishna declared, "As long as the sun, moon, stars, and earth exist, your unmatched generosity (Danveertech) will be praised across all three worlds. A donor as great as you has never existed before in this world, nor will there ever be one."
Shri Krishna then told Karna that he could ask for any boon. Karna replied that because he was born as a poor chariot driver’s son (Sutputra), he had faced immense deception and injustice throughout his life. He requested that the next time Krishna incarnated on Earth, He should strive to uplift and improve the lives of backward classes.
Along with this, Karna asked for two more boons. As his second boon, he wished that in his next birth, Lord Krishna should be born in his kingdom. For his third boon, he requested Shri Krishna to perform his last rites only on virgin land—a piece of earth that had never been used for any cremation before.
According to belief, Lord Krishna could not find a single piece of land on the entire Earth where a human body had not been cremated before. After a long search, he found just a single inch of land on the banks of the Tapti River in the city of Surat where no cremation had ever taken place. Since it was impossible to place a human body on a mere one inch of land, Lord Krishna first laid down an arrow on that spot. He then placed Karna's body upon it and performed the funeral rites. Today, this sacred site is recognized by people as the "Tulsiwadi Temple."
After Karna’s cremation on the banks of the Tapi River, the Pandavas expressed doubt over whether the land was truly virgin. To clear their skepticism, Lord Krishna made Karna appear, who announced through a divine voice from the heavens (Akashvani): "I am the son of the Sun god. Ashwini and Kumar are my brothers, and Tapi is my sister. My cremation has indeed been performed on virgin land."
The Pandavas repliaed, "We have come to know the truth, but how will future generations know of this?" Lord Krishna then declared, "A Banyan tree (Vat Vriksha) with only three leaves will grow at this spot, symbolizing Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh."
The Miracle of the Three-Leaved Banyan Tree
This place is now home to the Teen Patta Bad Temple (Three-Leaved Banyan Temple). The Banyan tree standing here is said to be thousands of years old. Remarkable and miraculous as it is, to this very day, only three leaves grow on this tree, and they remain lush and green throughout the ages.
It is firmly believed that anyone who offers prayers at this sacred site with true faith and a pure heart will surely have their wishes and desires fulfilled.
