जब पांडव वनवास में थे तब दमयंती की कहानी महाभारत में आती है।
की सुदर्शन पुरुष नल को अपना पति चुनने की है।
नल और दमयंती की दो संतानें थीं। बारह सालों से दोनों एक सुखी वैवाहिक जीवन व्यतीत कर रहे थे। लेकिन दुर्भाग्य ने उनके जीवन में चुपके से तब प्रवेश किया जब नल के चचेरे भाई पुष्कर ने उसे द्यूत क्रीड़ा के लिए आमंत्रित किया। उस द्यूत क्रीड़ा में नल अपना सर्वस्व हार गया। उसे अपना सब कुछ छोड़कर केवल शरीर में धारण किए गए वस्त्रों के साथ महल से जाना पड़ा।
दमयंती अपने पति के साथ सब कुछ छोड़ कर जाना चाहती थी। नल ने उसे ऐसा करने से रोका। पर वह नहीं मानी। अतः वह उसे भी अपने साथ ले गया।
नल के पास अस्त्र शस्त्र भी नहीं थे जिनकी मदद से वह शिकार कर सकता। उसने शरीर में धारण किए गए वस्त्र से कुछ पक्षियों का शिकार करने का प्रयास किया। पर पक्षी उसका वह वस्त्र भी लेकर उड़ गए। इससे नल और भी अधिक दुखी हो गया। उसने कहा कि अब तो उसके शरीर पर वस्त्र भी नहीं है। तब दमयंती ने उसे सांत्वना दी कि वह परेशान ना हो। वह हर दुख में उसके साथ है। यह कहकर दमयंती ने अपने वस्त्र का आधा हिस्सा फाड़ कर नल को दे दिया।
रात में जब वह दोनों सो रहे थे। नल अपनी पत्नी दमयंती की दुर्दशा देख कर बहुत दुखी हुआ। दमयंती की विपत्तियों का कारण वह स्वयं को मान रहा था। वह यह सोचकर सोती हुई दमयंती को वन में छोड़ कर चला गया कि उसे ना पाकर दमयंती अपने पिता के घर चली जाएगी।
लेकिन नल का सोचना गलत था। अपने पिता के घर जाने की जगह दमयंती नल को वन में ढूंढते हुए इधर-उधर भटकने लगी। अकेले भटकते हुए उसका सामना कुछ दुष्ट लोगों से हुआ। पर वह साहस के साथ उनसे बचकर निकल गई। इस तरह चेदी राज्य में पहुँच गई।
वन में भटकते हुए सुंदर दमयंती का रूप मलिन हो गया था। उसे देखकर बच्चे उस पर पत्थर बरसाने लगे। चेदी की रानी अपने महल से यह सब देख रही थी। यह देख कर उसे बहुत दुख हुआ। उसने दमयंती को अपने महल में बुलवा लिया।
दमयंती रानी की सेविका बन गई। उसने अपना परिचय सहरंध्री के नाम से दिया। वह रानी की प्रसाधिका बन गई।
कुछ दिनों तक दमयंती चेदी राज की रानी प्रसाधिका बन कर महल में रहती है। लेकिन एक दिन एक पुरोहित ने उसे पहचान लिया। उसे अपने पिता के घर जाना पड़ा।
उसने अपने पिता से इच्छा जताई कि वह अपने पति नल को ढूंढ़ना चाहती है। ऐसा उसके पिता ने पर्णद नाम है एक ब्राह्मण को यह काम सौंप दिया। लेकिन वह ब्राह्मण नहीं जानता था कि नल को कैसे पहचाना जाए। अतः दमयंती ने उससे कि अपनी यात्रा के दौरान तुम मेरा सिखाया हुआ यह गीत गाते रहना।
"ओ द्यूत में अपना राज पाठ सब हार जाने वाले,
अपनी पत्नी से आधा वस्त्र रहने के बाद उसे जंगल में छोड़ देने वाले,
तुम कहाँ हो ?
तुम्हारी प्रेयसी तुम्हें याद करती है।"
दमयंती जानती थी कि इस गीत को सुनकर केवल नल ही पहचान पाएगा कि यह गाना उसके लिए गाया जा रहा है। अतः ब्राह्मण सारे रास्ते यही गीत गाता गया। जब वह अयोध्या पहुँचा तो वहाँ के राजा रितुपर्ण के बौने तथा कुरुप रसोइए ने इस गीत का जवाब देते हुए कहा,
"उस हतभागी की प्रेयसी तुम दुखी ना हो,
जिस मूर्ख ने अपना सब कुछ द्यूतक्रीड़ा में गवा दिया,
जिसके वस्त्र पक्षी लेकर उड़ गए,
जो आधी रात में तुम्हें अकेला छोड़ कर चला गया,
तुम्हारा वह प्रेमी तुम्हें बहुत चाहता है।"
पर्णदा यह उत्तर सुनकर फौरन दमयंती के पास वापस गया। उसे सारी बात बताई। दमयंती ने कहा कि वह जरूर नल होगा। ब्राह्मण ने कहा कि वह नल नहीं हो सकता है। जिसने गीत का उत्तर दिया वह बहूका नाम का बौना और कुरूप व्यक्ति था। लेकिन दमयंती को पूर्ण विश्वास था कि वह नल ही है।
नल को वापस लाने के लिए उसने एक योजना बनाई। उसने अपने झूठे स्वयंवर की योजना बनाई। अपने दूत सुदेव को अयोध्या के राजा रितुपर्ण के पास यह संदेशा देकर भेजा नल कि का कोई पता नहीं चल रहा है। अतः दमयंती दूसरा विवाह करना चाहती है। इसके लिए स्वयंवर रचाया जा रहा है। किंतु स्वयंवर अगले दिन ही है। राजा रितुपर्ण को स्वयंवर में आमंत्रित किया गया है।
दमयंती ने जानबूझकर जय संदेशा दिया था कि स्वयंवर अगले दिन ही है। वह जानती थी कि नल सबसे तेज रथ चलाने वाला है। अतः स्वयंवर में आने के लिए राजा रितुपर्ण उसे ही साथ में लाएंगे।
जैसा दमयंती ने सोचा था वैसा ही हुआ। राजा रितुपर्ण ने बहूका बने नल से कहा कि वह उन्हें जल्दी से जल्दी विदर्भ पहुँचा दे। लेकिन बहूका ने राजा रितुपर्ण के सामने शर्त रखी कि वह उसे द्यूतक्रीड़ा सिखाएंगे। राजा रितुपर्ण द्यूतक्रीड़ा में माहिर थे। वह उसे सिखाने के लिए तैयार हो गए।
बहूका राजा रितुपर्ण का रथ लेकर विदर्भ पहुँच गया। जैसे ही रथ ने महल के भीतर प्रवेश किया दो बच्चे दौड़ कर रथ की तरफ आए। उन्हें देखते ही बहूका ने रथ से उतर कर उन दोनों को गले लगा लिया। राजा रितुपर्ण कुछ समझ नहीं पा रहे थे। उन्होंने बहूका से उन बच्चों के बारे में पूँछा। परंतु उसने कोई उत्तर नहीं दिया।
दमयंती दूर से सब देख रही थी। उसे पूरा यकीन था कि बहूका ही उसका पति नल है। जब बहूका महल के द्वार से गुजरा तो सारे दरवाजे अपने आप खुल गए। ऐसा लग रहा था कि सारा महल ही उसे पहचानता है। दमयंती उसकी तरफ भागी और उसे सबके सामने अपने आलिंगन में बांध लिया। उसने घोषणा की कि यह उसका पति नल है। सबको यह सुनकर बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ। क्योंकि जो व्यक्ति के सामने खड़ा था बौना और कुरूप था। जबकि नल एक सुदर्शन पुरुष था।
अपनी चुप्पी तोड़ते हुए सबको बताया की वही नल है। उसने बताया कि उसका सामना कर्कोटक नामक एक विषैल में नाम से हुआ था। उसके फुफकारने से ही नल बौना कुरूप हो गया। लेकिन उस नाग ने उसे वरदान में एक ऐसा वस्त्र दिया था जिसे ओढ़ते ही वह अपने असली रूप में आ जाएगा। उस नाग ने ही उससे कहा था कि वह अयोध्या के राजा रितुपर्ण के पास जाकर उनसे द्यूतक्रीड़ा के हुनर सीखे।
नल के द्वारा नाग का दिया वस्त्र ओढ़ते ही वह पुनः सुदर्शन पुरुष बन गया। सारी कहानी जानकर राजा रितुपर्ण नल और दमयंती के प्रेम से बहुत प्रभावित हुए। उन्होंने नल को द्यूतक्रीड़ा के सारे गुण सिखा दिए।
कुछ दिनों के बाद नल ने अपने चचेरे भाई पुष्कर को द्यूतक्रीड़ा के लिए आमंत्रण दिया। नल ने कहा कि इस बार वह अपनी सुंदर पत्नी दमयंती को दांव पर लगाएगा। यह सुनकर पुष्कर द्यूतक्रीड़ा के लिए तैयार हो गया।
किंतु इस बार विजय नल की हुई।

The story of Damayanti appears in the *Mahabharata* during the time when the Pandavas were in exile in the forest.
, and how she chose Nala—a man of striking handsomeness—as her husband.
Nala and Damayanti had two children. For twelve years, they lived a blissful married life. However, misfortune crept stealthily into their lives when Nala's cousin, Pushkara, challenged him to a game of dice. In that game, Nala lost everything he possessed. He was forced to abandon all his worldly goods and leave the palace, taking nothing with him but the clothes on his back.
Damayanti wished to forsake everything and accompany her husband into exile. Nala tried to dissuade her, but she remained adamant. Consequently, he took her along with him.
Nala possessed neither weapons nor tools that would enable him to hunt for food. He attempted to catch some birds using the very clothes he was wearing; however, the birds snatched the garment and flew away with it. This plunged Nala into even deeper despair, for he lamented that he was now left without even a stitch of clothing on his body. Damayanti then consoled him, urging him not to lose heart and assuring him that she would stand by his side through every tribulation. With these words, Damayanti tore her own garment in half and gave one portion to Nala.
Later that night, while they both lay sleeping, Nala was overwhelmed with grief upon witnessing his wife Damayanti's plight. He held himself solely responsible for the misfortunes that had befallen her. Believing that if she could not find him, Damayanti would eventually return to her father's home, he abandoned her in the forest while she slept and departed.
However, Nala's assumption proved incorrect. Instead of returning to her father's palace, Damayanti began to wander aimlessly through the forest, searching desperately for Nala. While wandering alone, she encountered some wicked men; yet, with great courage, she managed to escape from them. In this manner, she eventually reached the Kingdom of Chedi.
Having wandered through the forest, the once-radiant beauty of Damayanti had become faded and disheveled. Upon seeing her, children began pelting her with stones. The Queen of Chedi, observing all this from her palace, was deeply moved by her plight. She summoned Damayanti into her palace.
Damayanti became a handmaiden to the Queen. She introduced herself by the name of Saharandhri and took on the role of the Queen's personal beautician.
For some time, Damayanti lived in the palace, serving as the beautician to the Queen of Chedi. However, one day, a priest recognized her. Consequently, she had to return to her father's home.
She expressed to her father her desire to search for her husband, Nala. Acceding to her wish, her father entrusted this task to a Brahmin named Parnada. However, the Brahmin did not know how to identify Nala. Therefore, Damayanti instructed him: "Throughout your journey, keep singing this song that I have taught you."
"Oh, you who lost your entire kingdom and fortune in a game of dice;
You who abandoned your wife in the forest, leaving her with only half a garment;
Where are you?
Your beloved yearns for you."
Damayanti knew that upon hearing this song, only Nala would recognize that it was being sung specifically for him. Thus, the Brahmin sang this very song throughout his journey. When he reached Ayodhya, the kingdom's King Rituparna—or rather, his short and unsightly cook—responded to the song with these words:
"Oh beloved of that unfortunate soul, do not grieve;
That fool who squandered his all in the game of dice;
Whose garments were snatched away and carried off by birds;
o abandoned you all alone in the dead of night—
That very lover of yours still loves you dearly."
Upon hearing this reply, Parnada immediately returned to Damayanti and recounted the entire story to her. Damayanti declared that it must surely be Nala. The Brahmin, however, insisted that it could not be Nala; the one who had answered the song was a dwarf-like, unsightly man named Bahuka. Yet, Damayanti remained absolutely convinced that it was indeed Nala.
She devised a plan to bring Nala back. She orchestrated a ruse—a mock *Svayamvara* (a ceremony for choosing a husband). She dispatched her messenger, Sudeva, to King Rituparna of Ayodhya with a message stating that Nala remained untraceable; consequently, Damayanti wished to remarry. To this end, a *Svayamvara* was being organized, scheduled to take place the very next day. King Rituparna was formally invited to attend.
Damayanti had deliberately included the detail that the *Svayamvara* was to be held the very next day. She knew that Nala was the swiftest charioteer in the land; therefore, to reach the *Svayamvara* in time, King Rituparna would undoubtedly bring him along.
Events unfolded exactly as Damayanti had anticipated. King Rituparna instructed Bahuka—who was Nala in disguise—to transport him to Vidarbha with the utmost speed. However, Bahuka placed a condition before King Rituparna: in exchange, the King must teach him the art of gambling. King Rituparna, being a master of the game, readily agreed to instruct him.
Bahuka drove King Rituparna's chariot all the way to Vidarbha. The moment the chariot entered the palace grounds, two children came running toward it. Upon seeing them, Bahuka immediately dismounted from the chariot and embraced them both. King Rituparna, bewildered by the scene, asked Bahuka about the children; however, Bahuka offered no reply.
Damayanti had been observing everything from a distance. She was now absolutely certain that Bahuka was, in fact, her husband, Nala. As Bahuka passed through the palace entrance, every door swung open of its own accord—it seemed as though the entire palace recognized him. Damayanti rushed toward him and, in the presence of everyone, embraced him tightly. She then proclaimed to all that this man was indeed her husband, Nala. Everyone present was struck with profound astonishment upon hearing this. For the person standing before them was a dwarf and hideous, whereas Nala was a man of striking appearance.
Breaking his silence, he revealed to everyone that he was, in fact, Nala. He explained that he had encountered a venomous serpent named Karkotaka; it was the serpent's very hiss that had transformed Nala into a hideous dwarf. However, as a boon, the serpent had bestowed upon him a garment—one that, the moment he draped it around himself Once again, Sudarshan transformed back into a man. Upon learning the entire story, King Rituparna was deeply moved by the love between Nala and Damayanti. He taught Nala all the intricacies of the game of dice.
A few days later, Nala challenged his cousin, Pushkara, to a game of dice. Nala declared that this time, he would wager his beautiful wife, Damayanti. Hearing this, Pushkara readily agreed to the game.
However, this time, victory belonged to Nala.
