इसका नाम “कर्मनाशा” इसलिए पड़ा क्योंकि मान्यता है कि इस नदी का जल पवित्र कर्मों को भी नष्ट कर देता है। इसलिए प्राचीन समय में लोग इसके जल को अशुभ मानते थे और इससे दूर रहते थे।

In ancient times, there lived a king named Satyavrata (Trishanku). He belonged to the Solar Dynasty (Suryavansh) and is considered an ancestor of King Harishchandra. Satyavrata was a highly ambitious man who harbored an extraordinary desire—he wished to ascend to heaven while still in his physical body.

Angered by this refusal, Satyavrata appealed to Sage Vashishtha's sons; yet, they too declined to fulfill his wish. Enraged by this second rejection, Satyavrata incurred a curse and subsequently became known by the name "Trishanku."

Following these events, Trishanku sought refuge with Sage Vishwamitra. Vishwamitra resolved to fulfill Trishanku's wish. He performed a special *Yajna* (sacrificial ritual) and, harnessing the power of his *Tapasya* (ascetic penance), propelled Trishanku—body and all—towards heaven.
⛔ Indra's Opposition
As Trishanku began to approach the celestial realm, Lord Indra intercepted him. Indra declared that entry into heaven while still in a physical body was impossible, and with that, he cast Trishanku back down.

Just as Trishanku began to plummet back toward the earth, Vishwamitra—using his divine powers—halted his descent midway through the sky. Right there, he created a new "heaven," which came to be known as "Trishanku Swarga" (Trishanku's Heaven).

According to the legend, while Trishanku remained suspended upside down in the sky, saliva began to drip from his mouth. This very saliva fell to the earth and began to flow as a river, which was subsequently named the Karmanasha River.
It acquired the name "Karmanasha" because of the belief that the waters of this river have the power to destroy even the most virtuous *Karmas* (meritorious deeds).
