एक रानी अपने गले का हीरों का हार निकाल कर खूँटी पर टाँगने वाली ही थी कि एक बाज आया और झपटा मारकर हार ले उड़ा। चमकते हीरे देखकर बाज ने सोचा कि खाने की कोई चीज होगी। वह नाले के किनारे एक पेड़ पर जा बैठा और खाने की कोशिश करने लगा। हीरे तो कठोर होते हैं, उसने चोंच मारी तो दर्द से कराह उठा। उसे समझ में आ गया कि यह उसके काम की चीज नहीं है। वह हार को उसी पेड़ पर लटकता छोड़ उड़ गया।
रानी को वह हार प्राणों सा प्यारा था। उसने राजा से कह दिया कि हार का तुरन्त पता लगवाइए वरना वह खाना-पीना छोड़ देगी। राजा ने कहा कि दूसरा हार बनवा देगा लेकिन उसने जिद पकड़ ली कि उसे वही हार चाहिए। सब ढूँढ़ने लगे पर किसी को हार मिला ही नहीं। रानी तो कोप भवन में चली गई थी। हारकर राजा ने यहाँ तक कह दिया कि जो भी वह हार खोज निकालेगा उसे वह आधे राज्य का अधिकारी बना देगा।
अब तो होड़ लग गई। राजा के अधिकारी और प्रजा सब आधे राज्य के लालच में हार ढूँढ़ने लगे। अचानक वह हार किसी को एक गन्दे नाले में दिखा। हार दिखाई दे रहा था, पर उसमें से बदबू आ रही थी, फिर भी राज्य के लोभ में एक सिपाही कूद गया। बहुत हाथ-पांव मारा, पर हार नहीं मिला। फिर सेनापति ने देखा और वह भी कूद गया। दोनों को देख कुछ उत्साही प्रजा जन भी कूद गए, फिर मंत्री भी कूद गये।
इस तरह जितने नाले से बाहर थे उससे ज्यादा नाले के भीतर खड़े उसका मंथन कर रहे थे। लोग आते रहे और कूदते रहे परन्तु हार मिला किसी को नहीं। जैसे ही कोई नाले में कूदता वह हार दिखना बन्द हो जाता, थककर वह बाहर आकर दूसरी तरफ खड़ा हो जाता। आधे राज्य का लालच ऐसा कि बड़े-बड़े ज्ञानी, राजा के प्रधानमंत्री सब कूदने को तैयार बैठे थे। सब लड़ रहे थे कि पहले मैं नाले में कूदूँगा तो पहले मैं। अजीब सी होड़ थी।
इतने में राजा को खबर लगी, राजा को भय हुआ कि आधा राज्य हाथ से निकल जाए, क्यों न मैं ही कूद जाऊँ उसमें ? राजा भी कूद गया।
एक सन्त गुजरे उधर से, उन्होंने राजा, प्रजा, मंत्री, सिपाही सबको कीचड़ में सना देखा तो चकित हुए और वह पूछ बैठे–‘क्या इस राज्य में नाले में कूदने की कोई परम्परा है ?’ लोगों ने सारी बात कह सुनाई।
संत हंसने लगे–‘भाई ! किसी ने ऊपर भी देखा ? ऊपर देखो, वह टहनी पर लटका हुआ है। नीचे जो तुम देख रहे हो, वह तो उसकी परछाई है।’ राजा सहित सभी जन बहुत शर्मिंदा हुए।
हम सब भी उस राज्य के लोगों की तरह बर्ताव कर रहे हैं। हम जिस सांसारिक चीज में सुख-शांति और आनन्द देखते हैं दरअसल वह उसी हार की तरह है जो क्षणिक सुखों के रूप में परछाई की तरह दिखाई देता है। हम भ्रम में रहते हैं कि यदि अमुक चीज मिल जाए तो जीवन बदल जाए, सब अच्छा हो जाएगा। लेकिन यह सिलसिला तो अंतहीन है। सांसारिक चीजें सम्पूर्ण सुख दे ही नहीं सकतीं। सुख शांति हीरों का हार तो है लेकिन वह परमात्मा में लीन होने से मिलेगा। बाकी तो सब उसकी परछाई है।

A queen was just about to take off the diamond necklace from her neck and hang it on a peg when a falcon swooped down and snatched it away. Mistaking the glittering diamonds for something edible, the falcon flew to a tree beside a drain and attempted to eat them. Since diamonds are hard, when he pecked at them, he cried out in pain. He realized that this object was of no use to him; leaving the necklace hanging on that very tree, he flew away.
Now, a fierce competition ensued. The King's officials and his subjects alike—lured by the promise of half the kingdom—began searching for the necklace. Suddenly, someone spotted the necklace lying in a filthy drain. The necklace was clearly visible, though a foul stench emanated from it; nevertheless, driven by the greed for the kingdom, a soldier jumped in. He thrashed about vigorously, but he could not find the necklace. Then the Commander-in-Chief saw it and jumped in as well. Inspired by the sight of the two of them, several enthusiastic subjects jumped in too, followed by the Royal Minister.
Thus, at any given moment, there were more people standing *inside* the drain—churning through its muck—than there were standing outside it. People kept arriving and jumping in, yet no one managed to find the necklace. The moment someone jumped into the drain, the necklace would vanish from sight; exhausted, the person would climb out and take up a position on the bank. Such was the allure of half the kingdom that even renowned scholars and the King's Prime Minister stood poised, ready to jump in. Everyone was squabbling—each insisting, "I will jump into the drain first!"—in a bizarre and frenzied race.
Just then, word reached the King. Seized by the fear that half his kingdom might slip through his fingers, he thought to himself: "Why shouldn't *I* jump in myself?" The King, too, jumped in.
A saint happened to pass by that way; seeing the King, his subjects, the ministers, and the soldiers—all smeared in mud—he was astonished and asked, "Is there some tradition in this kingdom of jumping into a drain?" The people recounted the entire story to him.
The saint began to laugh. "My friends! Did anyone bother to look *up*? Look above—it is hanging from that branch! What you are seeing down there is merely its reflection." Everyone, including the King, felt deeply embarrassed.
We, too, are behaving just like the people of that kingdom. The worldly objects in which we seek happiness, peace, and joy are, in reality, just like that necklace—appearing merely as a reflection in the form of fleeting pleasures. We live under the illusion that if we could only acquire a certain object, our lives would be transformed and everything would be perfect. Yet, this pursuit is endless. Worldly things simply cannot provide absolute happiness. True happiness and peace *are* indeed like that diamond necklace, but they can only be attained by merging one's consciousness with the Divine. Everything else is merely a reflection of it.
