Miraculous Story of Banke Bihari

English:
On the sacred soil of Vrindavan stood a magnificent temple, which the local King had built with immense love. An elderly priest was appointed to serve Banke Bihariji within the temple. To the priest, Bihariji was not merely an idol, but his friend, his Master, and his very everything. Years passed; the light in the priest's eyes dimmed, yet his love for the Lord continued to grow.
**An Unbreakable Rule**
The King had a strict rule: every day, he would send a beautiful garland of fresh flowers to the temple. The priest would adorn Bihariji with this garland, and when the King arrived in the evening for *darshan* (holy viewing), the priest would remove that very 'Prasadi garland'—the garland blessed by the Lord—from the deity's neck and place it around the King's.
**A Moment of Human Longing**
One day, due to unforeseen circumstances, the King could not visit the temple. He sent the garland through a servant, along with a message stating that he would not be coming that day. The priest placed the garland upon the Lord, but that day, a desire stirred within his heart: "My entire life has been spent in the service of the Lord, yet I have never had the privilege of wearing the very garland He has worn. Since the King is not here today, why shouldn't I partake of this *Prasad* myself?"
Overcome with emotion, the priest placed the garland around his own neck. But just then, a commotion arose—the King's entourage had arrived at the temple gates.
The priest was seized with panic. Terrified of punishment, he hastily snatched the garland from his neck and placed it back upon Bihariji. When the King entered, the priest, with trembling hands, removed the garland and placed it around the King's neck.
The moment the King looked at the garland, his eyes fell upon a single white hair entangled within it. The King realized that the priest had defiled the garland by wearing it himself. Filled with rage, the King demanded, "Priest! What is this white hair? Are you trying to deceive me?"
The priest was terrified. In a desperate attempt to save his life, the words escaped his lips: "Maharaj, that is a hair belonging to Bihariji Himself!"
The King's fury reached its absolute zenith. "Lies! Do God's hair ever turn white? Very well, tomorrow morning, during the *Shringar* (adornment) ceremony, I shall come personally. If Bihariji's hair turns out to be black, you shall be sentenced to death!"
The priest wept throughout the entire night. Falling at the Lord's feet, he pleaded, "O Girdhari! Driven by attachment, I committed a transgression; but now, my honor rests in Your hands. I have grown old; will You stand by and watch Your own child be led to the gallows?"
The following morning, the King arrived at the temple. Suspicious, he removed Bihariji's crown—and stood utterly stunned. Every single strand of Bihariji's hair was as white as milk. The King suspected that the priest had dyed the hair in a desperate attempt to save his own life. To test the truth, the moment the King reached out to pluck a single strand of hair, a stream of blood began to flow from the deity's head. The ground seemed to give way beneath the King's feet; he fell at the Lord's feet and began to beg for forgiveness.
Then, a solemn voice resonated from the idol:
"O King! You perceived Me as nothing more than a stone statue; therefore, from this day forth, to you, I shall remain merely stone. But to this priest, I am the living God incarnate. To uphold the integrity of his guileless faith, I had to turn My hair white today—and even endure the pain of shedding blood."
**The Essence of the Story**
This story serves as a reminder that God yearns for true sentiment (*Bhav*). If the mind harbors genuine faith, even a stone idol will speak; conversely, if the heart is filled only with ego, even God Himself will appear to be nothing more than a mere stone.
