एक शहर में एक आदमी रहता था। वह बहुत ही लालची था। उसने सुन रखा था कि अगर संतों और साधुओं की सेवा की जाए तो बहुत अधिक धन प्राप्त होता है। यह सोचकर उसने साधु-संतों की सेवा करनी प्रारम्भ कर दी। एक बार उसके घर एक बड़े ही चमत्कारी संत आए।

उन्होंने उसकी सेवा से प्रसन्न होकर उसे चार दीये दिए और कहा, “इनमें से एक दीया जला लेना और पूर्व दिशा की ओर चले जाना। जहाँ यह दीया बुझ जाए, वहाँ की जमीन को खोद लेना, वहाँ तुम्हें काफी धन मिल जाएगा। अगर फिर तुम्हें धन की आवश्यकता पड़े तो दूसरा दीया जला लेना और पश्चिम दिशा की ओर चले जाना। जहाँ यह दीया बुझ जाए, वहाँ की जमीन खोद लेना, तुम्हें मनचाही माया मिलेगी। फिर भी संतुष्टि न हो तो तीसरा दीया जला लेना और दक्षिण दिशा की ओर चले जाना। उसी प्रकार दीया बुझने पर जब तुम वहाँ की जमीन खोदोगे तो तुम्हें बेअंत धन मिलेगा। तब तुम्हारे पास केवल एक दीया बच जाएगा और एक ही दिशा रह जाएगी। तुमने यह दीया न ही जलाना है और न ही इसे उत्तर दिशा की ओर ले जाना है।”

यह कहकर संत चले गए। लालची आदमी ने उसी समय पहला दीया जलाया और पूर्व दिशा की ओर चल पड़ा। दूर जंगल में जाकर दीया बुझ गया। उस आदमी ने उस जगह को खोदा तो उसे पैसों से भरी एक गागर मिली। वह बहुत खुश हुआ। उसने सोचा कि इस गागर को फिलहाल यहीं रहने देता हूँ, फिर कभी ले जाऊँगा। पहले मुझे जल्दी ही पश्चिम दिशा वाला धन देख लेना चाहिए।

यह सोचकर उसने दूसरे दिन दूसरा दीया जलाया और पश्चिम दिशा की ओर चल पड़ा। दूर एक उजाड़ स्थान में जाकर दीया बुझ गया। वहाँ उस आदमी ने जब जमीन खोदी तो उसे सोने की मोहरों से भरा एक घड़ा मिला। उसने घड़े को भी यही सोचकर वहीं रहने दिया कि पहले दक्षिण दिशा में जाकर देख लेना चाहिए। जल्दी से जल्दी अधिक से अधिक धन प्राप्त करने के लिए वह बेचैन हो गया।

अगले दिन वह दक्षिण दिशा की ओर चल पड़ा। दीया एक मैदान में जाकर बुझ गया। उसने वहाँ की जमीन खोदी तो उसे हीरे-मोतियों से भरी दो पेटियाँ मिलीं। वह आदमी अब बहुत खुश था।

तब वह सोचने लगा कि अगर इन तीनों दिशाओं में इतना धन पड़ा है तो चौथी दिशा में इससे भी अधिक धन होगा। फिर उसके मन में ख्याल आया कि संत ने उसे चौथी दिशा की ओर जाने से मना किया है। दूसरे ही पल उसके मन ने कहा, “हो सकता है उत्तर दिशा की दौलत संत अपने लिए रखना चाहते हों। मुझे जल्दी से जल्दी उस पर भी कब्जा कर लेना चाहिए।” अधिक से अधिक धन पाने की लालच ने उसे संतों के वचनों पर दोबारा सोचने ही नहीं दिया।

अगले दिन उसने चौथा दीया जलाया और जल्दी-जल्दी उत्तर दिशा की ओर चल पड़ा। दूर आगे एक महल के पास जाकर दीया बुझ गया। महल का दरवाज़ा बंद था। उसने दरवाज़े को धक्का दिया तो दरवाज़ा खुल गया। वह बहुत खुश हुआ। उसने मन ही मन सोचा कि यह महल उसके लिए ही है। वह अब तीनों दिशाओं की दौलत को भी यहाँ लाकर रखेगा और ऐश करेगा।

वह आदमी महल के एक-एक कमरे में गया। कोई कमरा हीरे-मोतियों से भरा हुआ था। किसी कमरे में सोने के कीमती आभूषण भरे पड़े थे। इसी प्रकार अन्य कमरे भी बेअंत धन से भरे हुए थे। वह आदमी चकाचौंध होता जाता और अपने भाग्य को सराहता। वह थोड़ा और आगे बढ़ा तो उसे एक कमरे में चक्की चलने की आवाज़ सुनाई दी।

वह उस कमरे में दाखिल हुआ तो उसने देखा कि एक बूढ़ा आदमी चक्की चला रहा है। लालची आदमी ने बूढ़े से कहा, “तू यहाँ कैसे पहुँचा?” बूढ़े ने कहा, “ऐसा कर, तू ज़रा चक्की चला, मैं साँस लेकर तुझे बताता हूँ।”

लालची आदमी ने चक्की चलानी प्रारम्भ कर दी। बूढ़ा चक्की से हट जाने पर ऊँची-ऊँची हँसने लगा। लालची आदमी उसकी ओर हैरानी से देखने लगा। वह चक्की बंद ही करने लगा था कि बूढ़े ने चेतावनी देते हुए कहा, “नहीं, नहीं! चक्की चलाना बंद मत कर।”

फिर बूढ़े ने कहा, “यह महल अब तेरा है, परंतु यह उतनी देर तक खड़ा रहेगा जितनी देर तक तू चक्की चलाता रहेगा। अगर चक्की चलनी बंद हो गई तो महल गिर जाएगा और तू भी इसके नीचे दबकर मर जाएगा।” कुछ समय रुककर बूढ़ा फिर कहने लगा, “मैंने भी तेरी ही तरह लालच करके संतों की बात नहीं मानी थी और मेरी सारी जवानी इस चक्की को चलाते हुए बीत गई।”

वह लालची आदमी बूढ़े की बात सुनकर रोने लगा। फिर कहने लगा, “अब मेरा इस चक्की से छुटकारा कैसे होगा?”

बूढ़े ने कहा, “जब तक मेरे और तेरे जैसा कोई आदमी लालच में अंधा होकर यहाँ नहीं आएगा, तब तक तू इस चक्की से छुटकारा नहीं पा सकेगा।”

तब उस लालची आदमी ने बूढ़े से आखिरी सवाल पूछा, “तू अब बाहर जाकर क्या करेगा?”

बूढ़े ने कहा, “मैं सब लोगों से ऊँची आवाज़ में कहूँगा—लालच बुरी बला है।”

There once lived a man in a city. He was extremely greedy. He had heard that if one served saints and holy men, one would acquire immense wealth. Driven by this thought, he began serving saints and ascetics. One day, a highly miraculous saint visited his home.

Pleased with his service, the saint gave him four lamps and said, “Light one of these lamps and head toward the east. Wherever this lamp goes out, dig the ground; there you will find a considerable amount of wealth. If you require more wealth after that, light the second lamp and head toward the west. Wherever this lamp goes out, dig the ground there, and you will find riches beyond your wildest dreams. If you still remain unsatisfied, light the third lamp and head toward the south. In the same manner, when the lamp goes out and you dig the ground there, you will discover boundless wealth. By then, you will have only one lamp remaining, and only one direction left—the north. You must neither light this final lamp nor take it toward the north.”

Having said this, the saint departed. The greedy man immediately lit the first lamp and set off toward the east. After traveling deep into a forest, the lamp went out. When the man dug at that spot, he discovered a pot filled with money. He was overjoyed. He thought to himself, “I will leave this pot here for now and come back for it another time. First, I must quickly go and see the wealth that lies in the west.”

With this thought, he lit the second lamp the very next day and headed toward the west. After traveling to a desolate, remote area, the lamp went out. When the man dug the ground there, he found a pitcher filled with gold coins. He left that pitcher there as well, reasoning that he should first go and see what awaited him in the south. He had become consumed by an impatient eagerness to acquire as much wealth as possible, as quickly as he could.

The following day, he set off toward the south. The lamp went out in the middle of a vast open field. When he dug into the ground there, he discovered two chests filled with diamonds and pearls. The man was now overjoyed.

Then he began to ponder: if such wealth lay in these three directions, surely the fourth direction must hold even greater riches. However, the thought soon crossed his mind that the saint had expressly forbidden him from venturing toward that fourth direction. Yet, in the very next instant, his inner voice whispered, "Perhaps the saint wishes to keep the wealth of the North for himself. I must seize it as quickly as possible." His insatiable greed for accumulating ever-greater wealth left him no room to reconsider the saint's words.

The following day, he lit the fourth lamp and hurriedly set off toward the North. Far ahead, near a palace, the lamp flickered out. The palace gates were shut. He gave the gates a shove, and they swung open. He was ecstatic. He thought to himself that this palace was meant solely for him; he would now bring the wealth from the other three directions here as well and live a life of absolute luxury.

The man went through every single room in the palace. One room was overflowing with diamonds and pearls; another was packed with exquisite gold jewelry. In this manner, the other rooms, too, were filled with boundless riches. The man grew increasingly dazzled by the spectacle and marveled at his own good fortune. As he ventured a little further, he heard the sound of a grinding mill coming from one of the rooms.

He entered the room and saw an old man operating the mill. The greedy man asked the old man, "How did you end up here?" The old man replied, "Here, do this: you take over the grinding for a moment; let me catch my breath, and then I’ll tell you."

The greedy man began to operate the mill. As the old man stepped away from the millstone, he burst into loud, booming laughter. The greedy man stared at him in astonishment. He was just about to stop grinding when the old man issued a stern warning: "No, no! Do not stop grinding!" Then the old man said, “This palace is now yours; however, it will stand only as long as you keep turning the millstone. If the millstone stops turning, the palace will collapse, and you, too, will be crushed beneath it and die.” After pausing for a moment, the old man continued, “Just like you, I, too, was blinded by greed and disregarded the counsel of the wise; consequently, my entire youth was spent turning this very millstone.”

Upon hearing the old man’s words, the greedy man began to weep. Then he asked, “How, then, shall I ever be free of this millstone?”

The old man replied, “You will not find deliverance from this millstone until another man—blinded by greed, just like you and me—arrives here.”

Then the greedy man asked the old man one final question: “What will you do now that you are free to leave?”

The old man replied, “I will go out and proclaim to everyone, in a loud voice: ‘Greed is a terrible curse!’”
