एक बार एक निपट कंजूस सेठ था .वह एक दमड़ी भी किसी को देने को तैयार नहीं होता .यहां तक कि वह अपनी सांसे भी सोच समझ कर लेता है .उसका अपनी सांसो को नियंत्रण करने का बड़ा अनुभव होता है . कंजूस सेठ दानचंद श्रीकृष्ण का बड़ा भक्त था ,एक बार वह स्नान करने के लिए गंगा घाट जाता है ,वहां पर श्रीकृष्ण उसकी परीक्षा लेने के लिए प्रकट हो जाते हैं.                                          

 जब वह गंगा जी में डुबकी लगाने के लिए अंदर जाता है तो एकदम श्रीकृष्ण जी उसके सामने एक पंडित के रूप लेकर प्रकट हो जाते हैं ,और कहते हैं यजमान मुझे कुछ दक्षिणा दे दो .कंजूस सेठ दानचंद कहता है कि "श्रीमान मेरे पास कोई पैसा नहीं है."

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं ,"कोई बात नहीं तुम संकल्प कर लो कि मुझे कुछ दक्षिणा दोगे ".वह सोचता है चलो ठीक है और वह पंडित को 1 आना देने का निश्चय करता है और सोचता है कि पंडित को कौन सा मेरा घर पता है .मैंने तो यही संकल्प किया है, जब वह अगली बार मेरे सामने आएगा तो मैं उसे एक आने दे दूंगा.

वह गंगा घाट से स्नान करके अपने घर पहुंच जाता है और जाकर विश्राम करने के लिए लेट जाता है ,और सो जाता है .इतनी देर में दरवाजे पर कोई आहट होती है .उसकी पत्नी बाहर जाकर देखती हैं तो भगवान श्रीकृष्ण पंडित का रूप लेकर उसके घर के दरवाजे के बाहर पहुंच जाते हैं .पंडित उसकी पत्नी से कहता है कि, "यजमान जी ने मुझे 1 आने का सिक्का देने का संकल्प किया था ".उन्हें बोलो मैं आ गया हूं वह सिक्का मुझे दे दो.

 जब कंजूस सेठ दानचंद की पत्नी जाकर उसे कहती है आपने क्या किसी से कोई संकल्प किया था. सेठ ने कहा,"सुबह एक पंडित को बोला था, तुम्हें 1 आने का सिक्का दूंगा." पत्नी बोली कि अब वह बाहर आ गया है और अपना सिक्का मांग रहा है . सेठ बोलता है जा कर कह दो कि मैं बीमार हूं फिर कभी आना.

सेठ की पत्नी जाकर बोल देती है ,"श्रीमान मेरे पति बीमार हैं आप बाद में आ जाना." श्री कृष्ण कहते हैं ,"कोई बात नहीं मैं भी इंतजार कर लेता हूं. आप तब तक मुझे जलपान करवा दीजिए ".

पत्नी जाकर पति को बताती है कि वह पंडित ऐसे बोल रहा है . सेठ कहता है कि,"एक सिक्के के साथ-साथ अब जलपान का भी खर्चा करवाएगा."

सेठ अपनी पत्नी से कहता है कि तुम जाकर बोल दो कि सेठ जी मर गए. उसकी पत्नी कहती है कि ,"आप क्या बोल रहे हो ". वह कहता है ऐसा करना ही पड़ेगा, नहीं तो यह पंडित नहीं जाएगा .उसकी पत्नी जाकर कह देती है" श्रीमान मेरे पति मर गए हैं ."

भगवान कहते हैं, "कोई बात नहीं मैं जाकर पूरे गांव में खबर कर आता हूं .सेठ जी नहीं रहे आप अकेली कहां सारे गांव भर में घूमती रहेगी."

थोड़ी देर में सारा गांव इकट्ठा हो जाता है और सेठ की पत्नी बार-बार यही कहती है कि मेरे पति जिंदा है.वह नहीं मरे ,तो सभी कहते हैं कि यह तुम्हारी मोह माया है. इसलिए तुम्हें लग रहा है कि वह जिंदा है .क्योंकि सेठ जी का अपनी सांसो पर पूरा नियंत्रण था ,इसलिए उसने पूरा समय अपनी सांसे रोक कर रखी.

बात सेठ की शव शैय्या तक पहुंच जाती है .इतनी कंजूसी की एक सिक्का देने को तैयार नहीं मरने को तैयार है .भगवान सोचते हैं अब मैं इसका क्या करूं .जब गाँव के लोग उसे अंतिम यात्रा के लिए ले जाने लगते हैं तो वह पंडित लोगों से कहता है कि मुझे सेठ के कान में कुछ कहना है ,लोग कहते हैं कह लो वो वैसे भी वह मर गया है.

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं ,"आंखें खोलो मैं बैकुंठ से आया हूं तुम्हारे लिए ,जो मांगना है मांग लो." सेठ खुश हो जाता है कि ,भगवान मेरे लिए बैकुंठ से आए हैं .आंखें खोलते हैं तो क्या देखते है यह तो वही पंडित हैं.

तो भगवान मुस्कुरा कर कहते हैं मांग ले जो मांगना है. सेठजी कहते हैं भगवान मुझे कुछ नहीं चाहिए .मैंने जो संकल्प किया है कि 1 आने का सिक्का दूंगा .मैं अपना संकल्प वापस लेना चाहता हूं .मैं 1 आने का सिक्का नहीं देना चाहता.

भगवान बोलते हैं, "तथास्तु."

Once, there lived a thoroughly miserly merchant. He was unwilling to part with even a single penny for anyone. In fact, he was so stingy that he would even take his breaths with calculated caution; he possessed considerable expertise in controlling his breathing. This miserly merchant, named Danchand, was a devout devotee of Lord Krishna. One day, he went to the Ganges Ghat to take a holy dip. There, Lord Krishna appeared before him to put him to the test.

As the merchant stepped into the Ganges to immerse himself, Lord Krishna suddenly materialized before him in the guise of a priest and said, "O Patron, please offer me some *Dakshina* (ritual alms)." The miserly merchant, Danchand, replied, "Sir, I do not have any money on me."

Lord Krishna said, "No matter; simply make a solemn vow (*Sankalp*) that you will give me some *Dakshina*." The merchant thought to himself, "Very well," and decided to pledge one *Anna* (an old denomination of currency) to the priest. He reasoned, "What does this priest know about where I live? I have merely made a vow; whenever he happens to cross my path again, I shall hand him that one *Anna*."

After completing his bath at the Ganges Ghat, he returned home, lay down to rest, and soon drifted off to sleep. Shortly thereafter, a sound was heard at the door. When his wife went out to investigate, she found Lord Krishna—still in the guise of the priest—standing right outside their entrance. The priest addressed his wife, saying, "Your husband made a solemn vow to give me a coin worth one *Anna*. Please tell him that I have arrived; let him hand over that coin to me."

When the miserly merchant Danchand's wife went inside and asked him, "Did you make a vow to anyone?" the merchant replied, "This morning, I did tell a priest that I would give him a coin worth one *Anna*." His wife informed him, "Well, he is standing outside right now and is asking for his coin." The merchant retorted, "Go tell him that I am ill, and that he should come back another time."

The merchant's wife went back out and conveyed the message: "Sir, my husband is unwell; perhaps you could come back at a later time." Lord Krishna replied, "That is quite alright; I shall simply wait here. In the meantime, perhaps you could offer me some light refreshments?" The wife goes and tells her husband what the priest has said. The merchant remarks, "Now, in addition to a single coin, he’s going to make me incur the expense of refreshments as well!"

The merchant instructs his wife, "Go and tell him that the merchant has passed away." His wife asks in astonishment, "What on earth are you saying?" He replies, "We have no choice; we must do this, otherwise this priest will never leave." His wife goes out and announces, "Sir, my husband has died."

The Lord responds, "Very well. I shall go and spread the news throughout the entire village myself. Since the merchant is no more, how could you possibly go wandering all over the village alone?"

Before long, the entire village gathers there. The merchant's wife repeatedly insists, "My husband is alive! He hasn't died!" But everyone dismisses her words, saying, "This is merely your attachment and delusion; that is why you *feel* he is still alive." Because the merchant possessed complete mastery over his breath, he had held his breath for the entire duration.

The situation escalates to the point where the merchant is laid out on his funeral bier. Such was his stinginess—unwilling to part with even a single coin, yet willing to feign death! The Lord wonders to Himself, "What am I to do with this man now?" As the villagers prepare to carry him away for his final rites, the priest requests of them, "I need to whisper something into the merchant's ear." The villagers consent, saying, "Go ahead; speak your mind. He is dead anyway."

Lord Krishna then whispers, "Open your eyes! I have come all the way from Vaikuntha—the celestial abode—specifically for you. Ask for whatever your heart desires." The merchant is overjoyed at the thought that the Lord Himself has descended from Vaikuntha just for him. He opens his eyes, only to find... that it is the very same priest!

Smiling gently, the Lord says, "Go ahead—ask for whatever you wish." The merchant replies, "Lord, I desire nothing else. I simply wish to retract the vow I made—the pledge to give away that one-anna coin. I no longer wish to give it."

The Lord responds, "So be it."
