शुकदेवजी महाराज राजा परीक्षित से कहते हैं,कि हे प्रिय परीक्षित्! यह कथा परम गोपनीय—अत्यन्त रहस्यमय है। मलय पर्वत पर विराजमान भगवान् अगस्त्यजी ने श्रीहरि की पूजा करते समय मुझे यह सुनाया था,आप भी सुने
कान्यकुब्ज (कन्नौज) में एक ब्राम्हण रहता था। उसका नाम अजामिल था। यह अजामिल बड़ा शास्त्रज्ञ था। शील, सदाचार और सद्गुणों का तो यह खजाना ही था। ब्रम्हचारी, विनयी, जितेन्द्रिय, सत्यनिष्ठ, मन्त्रवेत्ता और पवित्र भी था। इसने गुरु, संत-महात्माओं सबकी सेवा की थी। एक बार अपने पिता के आदेशानुसार वन में गया और वहाँ से फल-फूल, समिधा तथा कुश लेकर घर के लिये लौटा। लौटते समय इसने देखा की एक व्यक्ति मदिरा पीकर किसी वेश्या के साथ विहार कर रहा है।
वेश्या भी शराब पीकर मतवाली हो रही है। अजामिल ने पाप किया नहीं केवल आँखों से देखा और काम के वश हो गया । अजामिल ने अपने मन को रोकने की बहुत कोशिश की लेकिन नाकाम रहा। अब यह मन-ही-मन उसी वेश्या का चिन्तन करने लगा और अपने धर्म से विमुख हो गया ।
अजामिल सुन्दर-सुन्दर वस्त्र-आभूषण आदि वस्तुएँ, जिनसे वह प्रसन्न होती, ले आता। यहाँ तक कि इसने अपने पिता की सारी सम्पत्ति देकर भी उसी कुलटा को रिझाया। यह ब्राम्हण उसी प्रकार की चेष्टा करता, जिससे वह वेश्या प्रसन्न हो।
इस वेश्या के चक्कर में इसने अपने कुलीन नवयुवती और विवाहिता पत्नी तक का परित्याग कर दिया और उस वैश्या के साथ रहने लगा। इसने बहुत दिनों तक वेश्या के मल-समान अपवित्र अन्न से अपना जीवन व्यतीत किया और अपना सारा जीवन ही पापमय कर लिया। यह कुबुद्धि न्याय से, अन्याय से जैसे भी जहाँ कहीं भी धन मिलता, वहीं से उठा लाता। उस वेश्या के बड़े कुटुम्ब का पालन करने में ही यह व्यस्त रहता। चोरी से, जुए से और धोखा-धड़ी से अपने परिवार का पेट पलटा था।
एक बार कुछ संत इसके गांव में आये। गाँव के बाहर संतों ने कुछ लोगों से पूछा की भैया, किसी ब्राह्मण का घर बताइए हमें वहां पर रात गुजारनी है। इन लोगों ने संतों के साथ मजाक किया और कहा- संतों- हमारे गाँव में तो एक ही श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण है जिसका नाम है अजामिल। और इतना बड़ा भगवान का भक्त है की गाँव के अंदर नहीं रहता गाँव के बाहर ही रहता है।
अब संत जन अजामिल के घर पहुंचे और दरवाजा खटखटाया- भक्त अजामिल दरवाजा खोलो। जैसे ही अजामिल ने आज दरवाजा खोला तो संतों के दर्शन करते ही मानो आज अपने पुराने अच्छे कर्म उसे याद आ गए।
संतों ने कहा की भैया- रात बहुत हो गई है आप हमारे लिए भोजन और सोने का प्रबंध कीजिये।अजामिल ने सुंदर भोजन तैयार करवाया और संतो को करवाया। जब अजामिल ने संतों से सोने के लिए कहा तो संत कहते हैं भैया- हम प्रतिदिन सोने से पहले कीर्तन करते हैं। यदि आपको समस्या न हो तो हम कीर्तन करलें?
अजामिल ने कहा- आप ही का घर है महाराज! जो दिल में आये सो करो।
संतों ने सुंदर कीर्तन प्रारम्भ किया और उस कीर्तन में अजामिल बैठा। सारी रात कीर्तन चला और अजामिल की आँखों से खूब आसूं गिरे हैं। मानो आज आँखों से आंसू नहीं पाप धूल गए हैं। सारी रात भगवान का नाम लिया ।
जब सुबह हुई संत जन चलने लगे तो अजामिल ने कहा- महात्माओं, मुझे क्षमा कर दीजिये। मैं कोई भक्त वक्त नहीं हूँ। मैं तो एक मह पापी हूँ। मैं वैश्या के साथ रहता हूँ। और मुझे गाँव से बाहर निकाल दिया गया है। केवल आपकी सेवा के लिए मैंने आपको भोजन करवाया। नहीं तो मुझसे बड़ा पापी कोई नहीं है।
संतों ने कहा- अरे अजामिल! तूने ये बात हमें कल क्यों नहीं बताई, हम तेरे घर में रुकते ही नहीं।
अब तूने हमें आश्रय दिया है तो चिंता मत कर। ये बता तेरे घर में कितने बालक हैं। अजामिल ने बता दिया की महाराज 9 बच्चे हैं और अभी ये गर्भवती है।
संतों ने कहा की अबके जो तेरे संतान होंगी वो तेरे पुत्र होगा। और तू उसका नाम “नारायण” रखना। जा तेरा कल्याण हो जायेगा।
संत जन आशीर्वाद देकर चले गए। समय बिता उसके पुत्र हुआ। नाम रखा नारायण। अजामिल अपने नारायण पुत्र में बहुत आशक्त था। अजामिल ने अपना सम्पूर्ण हृदय अपने बच्चे नारायण को सौंप दिया था। हर समय अजामिल कहता था- नारायण भोजन करलो।
नारायण पानी पी लो। नारायण तुम्हारा खेलने का समय है तुम खेल लो। हर समय नारायण नारायण करता था।
इस तरह अट्ठासी वर्ष बीत गए। वह अतिशय मूढ़ हो गया था, उसे इस बात का पता ही न चला कि मृत्यु मेरे सिर पर आ पहुँची है ।
अब वह अपने पुत्र बालक नारायण के सम्बन्ध में ही सोचने-विचारने लगा। इतने में ही अजामिल ने देखा कि उसे ले जाने के लिये अत्यन्त भयावने तीन यमदूत आये हैं। उनके हाथों में फाँसी है, मुँह टेढ़े-टेढ़े हैं और शरीर के रोएँ खड़े हुए हैं । उस समय बालक नारायण वहाँ से कुछ दूरी पर खेल रहा था।
यमदूतों को देखकर अजामिल डर गया और अपने पुत्र को कहता हैं-नारायण! नारायण मेरी रक्षा करो! नारायण मुझे बचाओ!
भगवान् के पार्षदों ने देखा कि यह मरते समय हमारे स्वामी भगवान् नारायण का नाम ले रहा है, उनके नाम का कीर्तन कर रहा है; अतः वे बड़े वेग से झटपट वहाँ आ पहुँचे । उस समय यमराज के दूर दासीपति अजामिल के शरीर में से उसके सूक्ष्म शरीर को खींच रहे थे। विष्णु दूतों ने बलपूर्वक रोक दिया ।
उनके रोकने पर यमराज के दूतों ने उनसे कहा—‘अरे, धर्मराज की आज्ञा का निषेध करने वाले तुम लोग हो कौन ? तुम किसके दूत हो, कहाँ से आये हो और इसे ले जाने से हमें क्यों रोक रहे हो ?
जब यमदूतों ने इस प्रकार कहा, तब भगवान् नारायण के आज्ञाकारी पार्षदों ने हँसकर कहा—यमदूतों! यदि तुम लोग सचमुच धर्मराज के आज्ञाकारी हो तो हमें धर्म का लक्षण और धर्म का तत्व सुनाओ । दण्ड का पात्र कौन है ?
यमदूतों ने कहा—वेदों ने जिन कर्मों का विधान किया है, वे धर्म हैं और जिनका निषेध किया है, वे अधर्म हैं। वेद स्वयं भगवान् के स्वरुप हैं। वे उनके स्वाभाविक श्वास-प्रश्वास एवं स्वयं प्रकाश ज्ञान हैं—ऐसा हमने सुना है । पाप कर्म करने वाले सभी मनुष्य अपने-अपने कर्मों के अनुसार दण्डनीय होते हैं ।
भगवान् के पार्षदों ने कहा—यमदूतों! यह बड़े आश्चर्य और खेद की बात है कि धर्मज्ञों की सभा में अधर्म प्रवेश कर रह है, क्योंकि वहाँ निरपराध और अदण्डनीय व्यक्तियों को व्यर्थ ही दण्ड दिया जाता है । यमदूतों! इसने कोटि-कोटि जन्मों की पाप-राशि का पूरा-पूरा प्रायश्चित कर लिया है।
क्योंकि इसने विवश होकर ही सही, भगवान् के परम कल्याणमय (मोक्षप्रद) नाम का उच्चारण तो किया है । जिस समय इसने ‘नारायण’ इन चार अक्षरों का उच्चारण किया, उसी समय केवल उतने से ही इस पापी के समस्त पापों का प्रायश्चित हो गया ।
चोर, शराबी, मित्रद्रोही, ब्रम्हघाती, गुरुपत्नीगामी, ऐसे लोगों का संसर्गी; स्त्री, राजा, पिता और गाय को मारने वाला, चाहे जैसा और चाहे जितना बड़ा पापी हो, सभी के लिये यही—इतना ही सबसे बड़ा प्रायश्चित है कि भगवान् के नामों का उच्चारण किया जाय; क्योंकि भगवन्नामों के उच्चारण से मनुष्य की बुद्धि भगवान् के गुण, लीला और स्वरुप में रम जाती है और स्वयं भगवान् की उसके प्रति आत्मीय बुद्धि हो जाती है ।
तुम लोग अजामिल को मत ले जाओ। इसने सारे पापों का प्रायश्चित कर लिया है, क्योंकि इसने मरते समय भगवान् के नाम का उच्चारण किया है।
इस प्रकार भगवान् के पार्षदों ने भागवत-धर्म का पूरा-पूरा निर्णय सुना दिया और अजामिल को यमदूतों के पाश से छुड़ाकर मृत्यु के मुख से बचा लिया भगवान् की महिमा सुनने से अजामिल के हृदय में शीघ्र ही भक्ति का उदय हो गया।
अब उसे अपने पापों को याद करके बड़ा पश्चाताप होने लगा । (अजामिल मन-ही-मन सोचने लगा—) ‘अरे, मैं कैसा इन्द्रियों का दास हूँ! मैंने एक दासी के गर्भ से पुत्र उत्पन्न करके अपना ब्राम्हणत्व नष्ट कर दिया। यह बड़े दुःख की बात है। धिक्कार है! मुझे बार-बार धिक्कार है! मैं संतों के द्वारा निन्दित हूँ, पापात्मा हूँ! मैंने अपने कुल में कलंक का टीका लगा दिया!
मेरे माँ-बाप बूढ़े और तपस्वी थे। मैंने उनका भी परित्याग कर दिया। ओह! मैं कितना कृतघ्न हूँ। मैं अब अवश्य ही अत्यन्त भयावने नरक में गिरूँगा, जिसमें गिरकर धर्मघाती पापात्मा कामी पुरुष अनेकों प्रकार की यमयातना भोगते हैं। कहाँ तो मैं महाकपटी, पापी, निर्लज्ज और ब्रम्हतेज को नष्ट करने वाला तथा कहाँ भगवान् का वह परम मंगलमय ‘नारायण’ नाम! (सचमुच मैं तो कृतार्थ हो गया)।
अब मैं अपने मन, इन्द्रिय और प्राणों को वश में करके ऐसा प्रयत्न करूँगा कि फिर अपने को घोर अन्धकारमय नरक में न डालूँ । मैंने यमदूतों के डर अपने पुत्र “नारायण” को पुकारा। और भगवान के पार्षद प्रकट हो गए यदि मैं वास्तव में नारायण को पुकारता तो क्या आज श्री नारायण मेरे सामने प्रकट नहीं हो जाते?
अब अजामिल के चित्त में संसार के प्रति तीव्र वैराग्य हो गया। वे सबसे सम्बन्ध और मोह को छोड़कर हरिद्वार चले गये। उस देवस्थान में जाकर वे भगवान् के मन्दिर में आसन से बैठ गये और उन्होंने योग मार्ग का आश्रय लेकर अपनी सारी इन्द्रियों को विषयों से हटाकर मन में लीन कर लिया और मन को बुद्धि में मिला दिया।
इसके बाद आत्मचिन्तन के द्वारा उन्होंने बुद्धि को विषयों से पृथक् कर लिया तथा भगवान् के धाम अनुभव स्वरुप परब्रम्ह में जोड़ दिया । इस प्रकार जब अजामिल की बुद्धि त्रिगुणमयी प्रकृति से ऊपर उठकर भगवान् के स्वरुप में स्थित हो गयी, तब उन्होंने देखा कि उनके सामने वे ही चारों पार्षद, जिन्हें उन्होंने पहले देखा था, खड़े हैं।
अजामिल ने सिर झुकाकर उन्हें नमस्कार किया। उनका दर्शन पाने के बाद उन्होंने उस तीर्थस्थान में गंगा के तट पर अपना शरीर त्याग दिया और तत्काल भगवान् के पार्षदों का स्वरुप प्राप्त कर दिया ।
अजामिल भगवान् के पार्षदों के साथ स्वर्णमय विमान पर आरूढ़ होकर आकाश मार्ग से भगवान् लक्ष्मीपति के निवास स्थान वैकुण्ठ को चले गये।
शुकदेव जी महाराज कहते हैं परीक्षित्! यह इतिहास अत्यन्त गोपनीय और समस्त पापों का नाश करने वाला है। जो पुरुष श्रद्धा और भक्ति के साथ इसका श्रवण-कीर्तन करता है, वह नरक में कही नहीं जाता। यमराज के दूत तो आँख उठाकर उसकी ओर देख तक नहीं सकते।
उस पुरुष का जीवन चाहे पापमय ही क्यों न रहा हो, वैकुण्ठलोक में उसकी पूजा होती है । परीक्षित्! देखो-अजामिल-जैसे पापी ने मृत्यु के समय पुत्र के बहाने भगवान् नाम का उच्चारण किया! उसे भी वैकुण्ठ की प्राप्ति हो गयी! फिर जो लोग श्रद्धा के साथ भगवन्नाम का उच्चारण करते हैं, उनकी तो बात ही क्या है ।
*यमदूत और यमराज का संवाद*
जब भगवान के पार्षदों ने यमदूतों से अजामिल को छुड़ाया तो यमदूत यमराज के पास पहुंचे और कहते हैं-
प्रभो! संसार के जीव तीन प्रकार के कर्म करते हैं—पाप, पुण्य अथवा दोनों से मिश्रित। इन जीवों को उन कर्मों का फल देने वाले शासक संसार में कितने हैं ?
हम तो ऐसा समझते हैं कि अकेले आप ही समस्त प्राणियों और उनके स्वामियों के भी अधीश्वर हैं। आप ही मनुष्यों के पाप और पुण्य के निर्णायक, दण्डदाता और शासक हैं।
यमराज ने कहा—दूतों! मेरे अतिरिक्त एक और ही चराचर जगत् के स्वामी हैं। उन्हीं में यह सम्पूर्ण जगत् सूत में वस्त्र के समान ओत-प्रोत है। उन्हीं के अंश, ब्रम्हा, विष्णु और शंकर इस जगत् की उत्पत्ति, स्थिति तथा प्रलय करते हैं। उन्हीं ने इस सारे जगत् को नथे हुए बैल के समान अपने अधीन कर रखा है।
मेरे प्यारे दूतों! जैसे किसान अपने बैलों को पहले छोटी-छोटी रस्सियों में बाँधकर फिर उन रस्सियों को एक बड़ी आड़ी रस्सी में बाँध देते हैं, वैसे ही जगदीश्वर भगवान् ने भी ब्रम्हाणादि वर्ण और ब्रम्हचर्य आदि आश्रम रूप छोटी-छोटी नाम की रस्सियों में बाँधकर फिर सब नामों को वेदवाणी रूप बड़ी रस्सी में बाँध रखा है। इस प्रकार सारे जीव नाम एवं कर्म रूप बन्धन में बँधे हुए भयभीत होकर उन्हें ही अपना सर्वस्व भेंट कर रहे हैं।
सभी भगवान के आधीन हैं इनमें मैं, इन्द्र, निर्ऋति, वरुण, चन्द्रमा, अग्नि, शंकर, वायु, सूर्य, ब्रम्हा, बारहों आदित्य, विश्वेदेवता, आठों वसु, साध्य, उनचास मरुत्, सिद्ध, ग्यारहों रूद्र, रजोगुण एवं तमोगुण से रहित भृगु आदि प्रजापति और बड़े-बड़े देवता।
भगवान् के नामोच्चारण की महिमा तो देखो, अजामिल-जैसा पापी भी एक बार नामोच्चारण करने मात्र से मृत्युपाश से छुटकारा पा गया। भगवान् के गुण, लीला और नामों का भलीभाँति कीर्तन मनुष्यों के पापों का सर्वथा विनाश कर दे, यह कोई उसका बहुत बड़ा फल नहीं है, क्योंकि अत्यन्त पापी अजामिल ने मरने के समय चंचल चित्त से अपने पुत्र का नाम ‘नारायण’ उच्चारण किया।
उस नामाभासमात्र से ही उसके सारे पाप तो क्षीण हो ही गये, मुक्ति की प्राप्ति भी हो गयी। बड़े-बड़े विद्वानों की बुद्धि कभी भगवान् की माया से मोहित हो जाती है। वे कर्मों के मीठे-मीठे फलों का वर्णन करने वाली अर्थवाद रूपिणी वेदवाणी में ही मोहित हो जाते हैं और यज्ञ-यागादि बड़े-बड़े कर्मों में ही संलग्न रहते हैं तथा इस सुगमातिसुगम भगवन्नाम की महिमा को नहीं जानते।
यह कितने खेद की बात है। प्रिय दूतों! बुद्धिमान् पुरुष ऐसा विचार कर भगवान् अनन्त में ही सम्पूर्ण अन्तःकरण से अपना भक्तिभाव स्थापित करते हैं। वे मेरे दण्ड के पात्र नहीं हैं। पहली बात तो यह है कि वे पाप करते ही नहीं, लेकिन यदि कदाचित् संयोगवश कोई पाप बन भी जाय, तो उसे भगवान् का गुणगान तत्काल नष्ट कर देता है।
जिनकी जीभ भगवान् के गुणों और नामों का उच्चारण नहीं करती, जिनका चित्त उनके चरणारविन्दों का चिन्तन नहीं करता और जिनका सिर एक बार भी भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण के चरणों में नहीं झुकता, उन भगवत्सेवा-विमुख पापियों को ही मेरे पास लाया करो।
जब यमदूतों ने अपने स्वामी धर्मराज के मुख से इस प्रकार भगवान् की महिमा सुनी और उसका स्मरण किया, तब उनके आश्चर्य की सीमा न रही। तभी से वे धर्मराज की बात पर विश्वास करके अपने नाश की आशंका से भगवान् के आश्रित भक्तों के पास नहीं जाते और तो क्या, वे उनकी ओर आँख उठाकर देखने में भी डरते हैं।
प्रिय परीक्षित्! यह इतिहास परम गोपनीय है।

Shukdev Maharaja tells King Parikshit, "O dear Parikshit! This story is extremely confidential and extremely mysterious. Lord Agastya, seated on the Malaya Mountains, told it to me while worshipping Lord Hari. You should also listen."
A Brahmin lived in Kanyakubj (Kannauj). His name was Ajamil. This Ajamil was a great scholar of scriptures. He was a treasure trove of modesty, good conduct, and virtues. He was a celibate, humble, self-controlled, truthful, a scholar of mantras, and pure. He served his gurus, saints, and sages. Once, on his father's orders, he went to the forest and returned home with fruits, flowers, firewood, and kusha grass. While returning, he saw a man drunk and having an affair with a prostitute.
The prostitute was also becoming intoxicated by alcohol. Ajamil had committed no sin; he merely looked at her with his eyes and was overcome by lust. Ajamil tried hard to restrain his mind but failed. Now, he began to think of the same prostitute in his mind and turned away from his dharma.
Ajamila would bring beautiful clothes, jewelry, and other items that would please her. He even offered up his father's entire wealth to woo the same prostitute. This Brahmin would make similar efforts to please the prostitute.
For the sake of this prostitute, he abandoned his noble young woman and even his married wife and started living with her. For many days, he lived on the prostitute's impure food like feces and made his entire life sinful. This evil minded man would collect money from wherever he could find it, whether through justice or injustice. He was busy supporting the prostitute's large family. He fed his family through theft, gambling and fraud.
Once, some saints came to his village. Outside the village, the saints asked some people, "Please tell us about a Brahmin's house where we can spend the night." These people joked with the saints and said, "Saints, there is only one great Brahmin in our village, his name is Ajamil. He is such a great devotee of God that he doesn't live inside the village, but lives outside."
The saints then arrived at Ajamil's house and knocked on the door, "Devotee Ajamil, please open the door." As soon as Ajamil opened the door, the sight of the saints brought back memories of his past good deeds.
The saints said, "It's late at night, please arrange for food and sleep." Ajamil had a delicious meal prepared and served it to the saints. When Ajamil asked the saints to sleep, the saints replied, "Brother, we perform kirtan every day before bed. If you don't mind, can we perform kirtan?"
Ajamil said, "This is your house, Your Majesty! Do whatever you want."
The saints began a beautiful kirtan, and Ajamil sat in on it. The kirtan continued all night, and Ajamil shed many tears. It seemed as if not tears but sins had been washed away. He chanted God's name all night.
When morning came and the saints began to leave, Ajamila said, "Mahatmas, please forgive me. I am not a devotee. I am a great sinner. I live with a prostitute. And I have been banished from the village. I served you food only to serve you. Otherwise, there is no greater sinner than me."
The saints said, "Hey Ajamil! Why didn't you tell us this yesterday? We wouldn't have stayed at your house."
Now that you have given us shelter, don't worry. Tell me how many children you have in your house. Ajamila told him, "Your Majesty, you have nine children and she is currently pregnant."
The saints said, "The next child you have will be a son. Name him "Narayan." Go, and you will be blessed."
The saints blessed him and left. Time passed and he had a son. He named him Narayan. Ajamil was deeply attached to his son Narayan. He had given his entire heart to his child Narayan. He would constantly say, "Narayan, have your meal."
Narayan, drink some water. Narayan, it's time for you to play. He used to chant Narayan Narayan all the time.
Eighty-eight years passed in this way. He had become so foolish that he did not realize that death was upon him.
Now he began to think about his son, the boy Narayan. Just then, Ajamila saw three terrifying messengers of death arrive to take him away. They held nooses, their faces twisted, and their bodies stood on end. At that moment, the boy Narayan was playing some distance away.
Seeing the messengers of Yama, Ajamila became frightened and said to his son, "Narayan! Narayan, protect me! Narayan, save me!"
The Lord's attendants saw that the man was chanting the name of their Lord Narayana as he lay dying, so they quickly arrived. At that moment, Yamaraja's servants were pulling Ajamil's subtle body from his body. Vishnu's messengers forcibly stopped them.
When they stopped him, Yamaraj's messengers said to them, "Who are you to disobey the orders of the King of the Righteous? Whose messengers are you, where have you come from, and why are you stopping us from taking him away?"
When the messengers of Yama said this, the obedient companions of Lord Narayana laughed and said, "Messenger of Yama! If you are truly obedient to the King of Dharma, then tell us the characteristics and essence of Dharma. Who deserves punishment?"
The messengers of Yama said, "The actions prescribed by the Vedas are righteous, and those prohibited are unrighteous. The Vedas are the embodiment of God Himself. They are His natural breathing and self-illuminating knowledge—this is what we have heard. All humans who commit sinful acts are subject to their own consequences according to their own actions are punishable.
The Lord's attendants said, "Messenger of death! It is a matter of great surprise and regret that unrighteousness is entering the assembly of those who know the truth, because there innocent and unpunishable individuals are needlessly punished. Messenger of death! He has fully atoned for the sins of millions of lifetimes."
Because, even though forced, he did utter the most auspicious (liberating) name of God. The moment he uttered these four letters, "Narayan," all the sins of this sinner were atoned for.
A thief, a drunkard, a betrayer of a friend, a killer of a brahmin, a guru's wife, a person who associates with such people; a killer of a woman, a king, a father or a cow, no matter how big a sinner he is, the greatest atonement for all is to chant the names of the Lord; because by chanting the names of the Lord, the mind of a person gets absorbed in the qualities, pastimes and form of the Lord and the Lord himself develops a kindred feeling towards him.
Don't take Ajamila away. He has atoned for all his sins because he uttered the Lord's name while dying.
In this way, the Lord's courtiers gave the complete verdict of Bhagwat Dharma and saved Ajamil from the clutches of Yamadutas and from the jaws of death. On hearing the glory of the Lord, devotion soon arose in Ajamil's heart.
Now, remembering his sins, he felt great remorse. (Ajamila thought to himself,) "Oh, what a slave I am to my senses! I have destroyed my Brahminhood by begetting a son from a slave woman. This is a matter of great sorrow. Shame on me! I am cursed again and again! I am condemned by the saints; I am a sinner! I have brought shame upon my family!"
My parents were old and ascetics. I abandoned them too. Oh! How ungrateful I am! I will surely fall into the most dreadful hell, where wicked, sinful, lustful men who betray religion suffer various kinds of tortures from Yama. Where am I, a great deceiver, a sinner, shameless, and destroyer of Brahman's power? Where is that most auspicious name of God, 'Narayan'! (Truly, I am fulfilled).
Now, I will control my mind, senses, and life force and strive not to again cast myself into the utter darkness of hell. Fearing the messengers of death, I called out to my son, Narayana. And the Lord's attendants appeared. Had I truly called out to Narayana, wouldn't Lord Narayana have appeared before me today?
Ajamila was now deeply detached from the world. He abandoned all attachments and worldly desires and went to Haridwar. He sat down in the Lord's temple and, embracing the path of yoga, withdrew all his senses from worldly desires, absorbed his mind, and merged it with his intellect.
After this, through self-reflection, he separated his intellect from worldly objects and connected it to the Supreme Being, the experience of God's abode. Thus, when Ajamila's intellect transcended the threefold nature and settled into the form of God, he saw the same four councillors he had seen earlier standing before him.
Ajamila bowed his head and offered his obeisances. After having his darshan, he left his body on the banks of the Ganges at that holy place and immediately assumed the form of one of the Lord's associates.
Ajamil, along with the Lord's courtiers, boarded a golden plane and went through the sky to Vaikuntha, the abode of Lord Lakshmipati.
Shukdev Ji Maharaj says, "Parikshit! This history is extremely confidential and destroys all sins. Anyone who listens to and recites it with faith and devotion will never go to hell. Yamaraj's messengers cannot even look at him."
Even if that man's life was fraught with sin, he is worshipped in Vaikunthaloka. Parikshit! Look! A sinner like Ajamil, who at the time of death invoked the Lord's name on the pretext of his son, attained Vaikuntha! Then what about those who utter the Lord's name with devotion?
Dialogue between Yamdoot and Yamraj
When the Lord's attendants rescued Ajamil from the messengers of Yama, the messengers went to Yamaraj and said-
Lord! The creatures of this world perform three types of actions—sinful, virtuous, or a mixture of both. How many rulers are there in this world who can give these creatures the fruits of their actions?
We believe that You alone are the Lord of all beings and their masters. You alone are the judge, punisher, and ruler of human sin and virtue.
Yamaraj said, "Messenger! Besides me, there is only one other master of the animate and inanimate universe. This entire universe is permeated in him like a cloth in a thread. His parts, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shankar, create, sustain, and destroy this universe. He has the entire universe under his control like a yoked bull."
My dear messengers! Just as farmers first tie their oxen with small ropes and then tie those ropes to a larger horizontal rope, similarly, the Lord of the Universe has tied the castes like Brahman and other ashrams like Brahmacharya with small ropes of names and then tied all the names to a larger rope of the Vedas. Thus, all living beings, bound by the bondage of name and action, are frightened and offering their all to Him.
Everyone is subordinate to God. These include I, Indra, Nirriti, Varun, Moon, Agni, Shankar, Vayu, Surya, Brahma, twelve Adityas, Vishva Vishwadevata, the eight Vasus, Sadhya, forty-nine Maruts, Siddhas, eleven Rudras, Bhrigu without Rajogun and Tamogun, Prajapati and other great gods.
Behold the glory of chanting the Lord's name. Even a sinner like Ajamil was freed from the clutches of death simply by uttering it once. It is no small feat that the mere chanting of the Lord's qualities, pastimes, and names completely destroys a person's sins. For the most sinful Ajamil, in his dying moments, uttered his son's name, "Narayan," with a restless mind.
The mere mention of that name not only absolved all his sins but also brought him salvation. The minds of even the most learned are sometimes captivated by God's illusion. They become enamored with the Vedas, which describe the sweet fruits of actions, and remain engaged in monumental rituals like yagnas and other sacrifices, unaware of the glory of this extremely easy name of God.
This is so sad. Dear messengers! Wise men, thinking like this, establish their devotion to the Infinite Lord with all their heart. They do not deserve my punishment. First of all, they do not commit any sins, but if by chance they do commit any sin, their praise of the Lord instantly destroys it.
Bring to me only those sinners who are averse to the service of God, whose tongue does not pronounce the qualities and names of God, whose mind does not contemplate His feet and whose head does not bow at the feet of Lord Krishna even once.
When the messengers of Yama heard and remembered the glories of the Lord in this way from their master, Dharmaraja, they were astonished. Since then, believing Dharmaraja's words, they have refrained from approaching the Lord's devotees, fearing their own destruction. What's more, they are afraid to even look at them.
