How an Unknown Fast granted Moksha?

English:
In ancient times, a hunter supported his family by hunting animals. One day, he set out into the forest in search of game, but despite roaming about all day long, he failed to find any prey. He began to grow distressed from hunger and thirst. While keeping a lookout for game, he decided to set up camp beside a pond, beneath a *Bel* tree. Beneath the *Bel* tree lay a *Shivling* (a sacred symbol of Lord Shiva), which was completely covered by fallen *Bilva* leaves. The hunter, however, was unaware of this.
As he went about setting up his camp, the twigs he broke off happened—purely by coincidence—to fall directly onto the *Shivling*. While waiting for his prey, he continued to pluck leaves from the *Bel* tree and offer them onto the *Shivling*. Thus, the hunter—who had remained hungry and thirsty all day—inadvertently observed a fast, and *Bel* leaves were offered upon the *Shivling*. In this manner, he became the recipient of the spiritual merit gained through an act of virtue performed unknowingly.
As the first watch of the night passed, a pregnant doe came to the pond to drink water. Just as the hunter strung an arrow to his bow and drew back the string, the doe spoke: "Hunter, do not kill me; I am pregnant. I am about to give birth very soon. If you kill me now, you will be taking the lives of two beings at once, which is not right. Let me first give birth to my fawn; I promise to return to you immediately thereafter. You may kill me then."
The hunter found the doe’s words to be sincere; he immediately unstrung his bow, and the doe vanished into the thickets. Some time later, another doe passed by the same spot. The hunter was overjoyed, believing that he had finally secured his prey. As she drew near, he once again strung an arrow to his bow.
The doe pleaded humbly: "O Hunter! I have only just passed my mating season. I am a doe consumed by desire, pining in separation from my mate. I am wandering through the forest in search of my beloved. Let me go and reunite with my husband; I promise to return to you immediately thereafter."
The hunter let her go as well. Having let his prey slip away twice with his own hands, a sense of foreboding struck him. He fell into a state of deep anxiety. The final watch of the night was slowly drawing to a close. Just then, another doe passed by with her fawns. For the hunter, this was a golden opportunity. He wasted no time in nocking an arrow to his bow; he was just about to release it when the doe spoke, "O Hunter! I will return after entrusting these fawns to their father. Do not kill me at this moment."
The hunter laughed and replied, "I am not such a fool as to let game that has come right before me slip away. I have already lost my prey twice before this. My own children must be writhing in hunger and thirst."
In response, the doe spoke again, "Just as the love for your children weighs heavily on your heart, so too am I deeply concerned for mine. Therefore, solely for the sake of the children, I beg of you the gift of life—if only for a short while. O Hunter! Trust me; I vow to leave them with their father and return immediately."
Hearing the doe's pleading voice, the hunter felt compassion for her. He let that doe go as well. In the absence of any game, the hunter, seated upon a *Bel* tree, kept plucking its leaves and casting them down below. As dawn began to break, a sturdy stag appeared on that very path. The hunter resolved that he would most certainly hunt this one.
Upon seeing the hunter's taut bowstring, the stag spoke in a humble voice, "O Hunter-brother! If you have already slain the three does and their little fawns who passed this way before me, then do not delay in killing me as well, so that I need not endure even a single moment of suffering in separation from them. I am the husband of those does. However, if you have granted them the gift of life, then be gracious enough to grant me a few moments of life as well. I shall reunite with them and then present myself before you."
As soon as he heard the stag's words, the entire sequence of events from the night flashed before the hunter's eyes. He recounted the whole story to the stag. Then the stag said, "If I were to die, my three wives—having departed under a solemn vow—would be unable to fulfill their sacred duty. Therefore, just as you placed your trust in them and let them go, please allow me to depart as well." "I shall appear before you shortly, accompanied by them all."
Through fasting, keeping a night-long vigil, and offering *Bel* leaves upon the *Shivling*, the hunter's violent heart had been cleansed and purified. It had become a vessel for divine power. The bow and arrow slipped effortlessly from his grasp. By the grace of Lord Shiva, his violent heart was filled with sentiments of deep compassion. Reflecting upon his past deeds, he began to burn in the searing flames of repentance.
A short while later, the deer—along with its entire family—appeared before the hunter, ready to be hunted; yet, witnessing such truthfulness, purity of spirit, and collective love among these wild creatures, the hunter was overcome with profound remorse. Tears streamed ceaselessly from his eyes. Instead of slaying the deer family, the hunter turned his hardened heart away from the violence against living beings, transforming it forever into a heart of tenderness and compassion.
From the celestial realms, the entire host of deities was also witnessing this event. As the incident reached its culmination, the gods and goddesses showered down a rain of flowers. Thereupon, both the hunter and the deer family attained salvation.
