गंगा जल पीकर प्रेत की हुई मुक्ति

एक ब्राह्मण प्रयागराज से 5 कोस (1 कोस = करीब2 मील) की दूरी पर रहता था । वह प्रत्येक संक्रांति के दिन स्नान करने के लिए प्रयाग में जाया करता था । माघ मास की संक्रांति के दिन तो वह अपने परिवारसहित अवश्य ही वहाँ जाता था ।

जब वह ब्राह्मण बूढ़ा और चलने में असमर्थ हो गया, तब एक बार माघ की संक्रांति आने पर उसने अपने पुत्र को बुलाकर कहा : ‘‘हे पुत्र ! तुम प्रयागराज जाओ, त्रिवेणी में स्नान करके मेरे लिए भी त्रिवेणी के जल की गागर भरकर लाना और संक्रांति के पुण्यकाल में मुझे स्नान कराना, देर मत करना ।

पिता के वचन का पालन करते हुए उसका पुत्र प्रयाग के लिए चल पड़ा । त्रिवेणी में स्नान कर जब वह जल से भरी गागर पिता के स्नान के लिए ला रहा था तो रास्ते में उसे एक प्रेत मिला । वह प्यास के कारण बहुत व्याकुल हो रहा था और गंगाजल पीने की इच्छा से रास्ते में पड़ा था ।

लड़के ने प्रेत से कहा : ‘‘मुझे रास्ता दो । प्रेत : ‘‘तुम कहाँ से आये हो ? तुम्हारे सिर पर क्या है ?

‘‘त्रिवेणी का जल है ।‘‘

"मैं इसी इच्छा से रास्ते में पड़ा हूँ कि कोई दयालु मुझे गंगाजल पिलाये तो मैं इस प्रेत-योनि से मुक्त हो जाऊँ क्योंकि मैंने गंगाजल का प्रभाव अपने नेत्रों से देखा है ।

‘‘क्या प्रभाव देखा है ?"

एक ब्राह्मण बड़ा विद्वान था । उसने शास्त्रार्थ द्वारा दिग्विजय प्राप्त करके बहुत धन उपार्जित कर रखा था । लेकिन क्रोधवश उसने किसी ब्रह्मवेत्ता ब्राह्मण को मार दिया । उस पाप के कारण मरने पर वह ब्रह्मराक्षस हुआ और हमारे साथ 8 वर्षों तक रहा । 8 वर्षों के बाद उसके पुत्र ने उसकी हड्डियाँ लाकर श्रीगंगाजी के निर्मल तीर्थ कनखल में डालकर गंगाजी से प्रार्थना की : ‘हे पापनाशिनी गंगा माते ! मेरे पिता को सद्गति प्रदान कीजिये । तब तत्काल ही वह ब्राह्मण ब्रह्मराक्षस भाव से मुक्त हो गया ।

उसीने मरते समय मुझे गंगाजल का माहात्म्य सुनाया था । मैं उसको मुक्त हुआ देखकर गंगाजल-पान की इच्छा से यहाँ पड़ा हूँ । अतः मुझको भी गंगाजल पिलाकर मुक्त कर दे, तुझे महान पुण्य होगा ।

‘‘मैं लाचार हूँ क्योंकि मेरे पिता बीमार हैं और उनका संक्रांति के स्नान का नियम है । यदि मैंने यह गंगाजल तुझे पिला दिया तो स्नान के पुण्यकाल तक न पहुँचने के कारण मेरे पिता का नियम भंग हो जायेगा ।"

‘‘तुम्हारे पिता का नियम भी भंग न हो और मेरी भी सद्गति हो जाय, ऐसा उपाय करो । पहले मुझे जल पिला दो,फिर नेत्रबंद करने पर मैं तुम्हें तत्काल श्रीगंगाजी के तट पर पहुँचाकर,तुम्हारे पिता के पास पहुँचा दूँगा ।"

ब्राह्मणपुत्र ने प्रेत की दुर्दशा पर दया करके उसे जल पिला दिया । तब प्रेत ने कहा : ‘‘अब नेत्रबंद करो और त्रिवेणी का जल लिये हुए स्वयं को अपने पिता के पास पहुँचा हुआ पाओ । ब्राह्मणपुत्र ने नेत्रबंद किये, फिर देखा कि वह त्रिवेणी के जल से गागर भरकर पिताजी के पास पहुँच गया है ।

गंगाजी की महिमा के विषय में भगवान व्यासजी ‘पद्म पुराण में कहते हैं : ‘‘अविलंब सद्गति का उपाय सोचनेवाले सभी स्त्री-पुरुषों के लिए गंगाजी ही एक ऐसा तीर्थ हैं, जिनके दर्शनमात्र से सारे पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं ।

भगवान शंकर नारदजी से कहते हैं : ‘‘समुद्रसहित पृथ्वी का दान करने से मनीषी पुरुष जो फल पाते हैं, वही फल गंगा-स्नान करनेवाले को सहज में प्राप्त हो जाता है । राजा भगीरथ ने भगवान शंकर की आराधना करके गंगाजी को स्वर्ग से पृथ्वी पर उतारा था । जिस दिन वे गंगाजी को पृथ्वी पर लेकर आये वही दिन ‘गंगा दशहरा के नाम से जाना जाता है ।

A Ghost Attains Liberation by Drinking Holy Ganges Water

A Brahmin lived at a distance of five *kos* (one *kos* equals approximately two miles) from Prayagraj. He used to travel to Prayag on every *Sankranti*—the day of the sun's transit—to take a holy dip. On the *Sankranti* occurring during the month of *Magha*, he would invariably make this pilgrimage accompanied by his entire family.

As the Brahmin grew old and became physically unable to walk, the *Magha Sankranti* arrived once again. He summoned his son and said: "O Son! Go to Prayagraj, take a holy dip in the Triveni, and bring back a pitcher filled with the sacred waters of the Triveni for me. Bathe me with this water during the auspicious period of the *Sankranti*; do not delay."

Obeying his father's command, the son set out for Prayag. After bathing in the Triveni, as he was returning with the pitcher of water intended for his father's bath, he encountered a *Preta* (a disembodied spirit) on the way. The spirit was in great distress due to intense thirst and lay upon the path, yearning to drink the holy water of the Ganges.

The boy said to the spirit: "Make way for me." The spirit replied: "Where have you come from? And what is it that you carry upon your head?"

"It is the sacred water of the Triveni."

"I lie here on this path with but one hope: that some compassionate soul might offer me Ganges water to drink, thereby liberating me from this ghostly existence—for I have witnessed the miraculous power of Ganges water with my own eyes."

"And what power have you witnessed?"

"There was once a Brahmin of profound scholarship. Through intellectual debates and scriptural disputations, he had achieved intellectual conquest across the land and amassed great wealth. However, in a fit of rage, he killed another Brahmin—a true knower of the Supreme Reality (*Brahmavetta*). As a consequence of this sin, upon his death, he was reborn as a *Brahmarakshasa* (a demonic spirit of a Brahmin) and remained in that state alongside us for eight long years. After eight years had passed, his son brought his father's mortal remains—his bones—to Kankhal, a sacred pilgrimage site on the banks of the holy Ganges. There, he immersed the remains in the pure waters of the Ganges and offered this prayer: 'O Mother Ganges, Destroyer of Sins! Grant salvation and a blessed afterlife to my father.' Instantly, that Brahmin was liberated from his existence as a *Brahmarakshasa*."

"It was he who, at the moment of his liberation, revealed to me the immense glory and power of Ganges water. Having witnessed his deliverance, I now lie here, yearning to drink that very Ganges water myself." "Therefore, grant me liberation as well by giving me a drink of the holy Ganges water; you shall earn immense spiritual merit."

"I am helpless, for my father is ill, and he observes a strict vow to perform the ritual bath on the day of Sankranti. If I were to give this Ganges water to you, my father's vow would be broken, as I would fail to reach the bathing site in time for the auspicious period."

"Devise a solution such that neither is your father's vow broken, nor is my soul denied its salvation. First, give me the water to drink; then, upon closing your eyes, I shall instantly transport you to the banks of the holy Ganges and deliver you safely to your father's side."

Moved by compassion for the spirit's plight, the Brahmin's son gave him the water to drink. Thereupon, the spirit said: "Now, close your eyes, and you shall find yourself instantly transported to your father's presence, still holding the water from the Triveni." The Brahmin's son closed his eyes, and when he opened them again, he found that he had indeed arrived at his father's side, his pitcher still filled with the sacred water of the Triveni.

Regarding the glory of the holy Ganges, Lord Vyasa states in the *Padma Purana*: "For all men and women seeking a swift path to salvation, the Ganges stands as the preeminent pilgrimage site—a sacred place where the mere sight of the holy river suffices to wash away all sins."

Lord Shankara reveals to Sage Narada: "The spiritual merit that wise men accrue through the act of donating the entire Earth—including its oceans—is the very same merit that a person attains effortlessly simply by taking a holy dip in the Ganges. It was King Bhagiratha who, through intense penance and devotion to Lord Shankara, brought the holy Ganges down from the heavens to the Earth. The very day on which he brought the Ganges down to this world is celebrated and known as 'Ganga Dussehra'."
