दो लड़के बाग में खेल रहे थे, तभी उन्होंने एक पेड़ पर जामुन लगे देखें। उनके मुंह में पानी भर आया। वे जामुन खाना चाहते थे लेकिन पेड़ बहुत ऊंचा था। अब कैसे खाएं जामुन ? समस्या बड़ी विकट थी।
एक लड़का बोला- ‘‘कभी-कभी प्रकृति भी अन्याय करती है। अब देखो, जामुन जैसा छोटा-सा फल इतनी ऊंचाई पर इतने बड़े पेड़ पर लगता है और बड़े-बड़े खरबूजे बेल से लटके जमीन पर पड़े रहते हैं।’’
दूसरे लड़के ने भी सहमति जताई। वह बोला- ‘‘तुम ठीक कहते हो, तुम्हारी बात में दम है लेकिन मेरी समझ में यह बात नहीं आई कि प्रकृति ने छोटे-बड़े के अनुपात का ध्यान क्यों नहीं रखा। अब यह भी कोई तुक हुई कि इतना छोटा-सा फल तोड़ने के लिए इतने ऊंचे पेड़ पर चढ़ना पड़े। मेरा तो मानना है कि प्रकृति भी संपूर्ण नहीं।’’
तभी अचानक ऊपर से जामुन का एक गुच्छा एक लड़के के सिर पर आ गिरा। उसने ऊपर की ओर देखा लेकिन कुछ बोला नहीं।
तभी दूसर लड़का बोला- ‘‘मित्र ! अभी हम प्रकृति की आलोचना कर रहे थे और प्रकृति ने ही हमें सबक सिखा दिया। सोचो जरा, यदि जामुन के बजाए तरबूज गिरा होता तो क्या होता ? शायद तुम्हारा सिर फट जाता और शायद फिर बच भी न पाते।’’
‘‘हां, प्रकृति जो भी करती है अच्छा ही करती है।’’ वह लड़का बोला जिसके सिर पर जामुन का गुच्छा गिरा है ।

Two boys were playing in a garden when they noticed a tree full of jamun (black plums). Their mouths watered at the sight. They wanted to eat the fruit, but the tree was very tall. How could they get the jamuns? It was quite a difficult problem.
One boy said, “Sometimes nature is unfair. Just look at this—such a small fruit like jamun grows so high up on such a big tree, while big melons hang from vines close to the ground.”
The other boy agreed. He said, “You are right, your point makes sense. But I don’t understand why nature didn’t maintain a balance between big and small things. It doesn’t seem logical that we have to climb such a tall tree just to pluck such tiny fruits. I think nature is not perfect.”
Just then, suddenly, a bunch of jamuns fell from above and hit one of the boys on the head. He looked up but said nothing.
The other boy then said, “My friend! Just now we were criticizing nature, and nature itself has taught us a lesson. Just think—what if, instead of jamuns, a watermelon had fallen? Your head might have been badly injured, and you might not have even survived.”
“Yes, whatever nature does, it does for the best,” said the boy who had been hit by the bunch of jamuns.
