हनुमान जी के बचपन की यह घटना जितनी रोमांचक है, उतनी ही सीख देने वाली भी है। यह कहानी हमें बताती है कि अत्यधिक शक्ति और चंचलता कभी-कभी संकट का कारण भी बन सकती है।
हनुमान जी अक्सर ऋषियों के आश्रमों में चले जाते थे। वहाँ ऋषि-मुनि शांति से यज्ञ और तपस्या में लीन रहते थे। नन्हे हनुमान अपनी शक्तियों का प्रयोग करके कभी ऋषियों की दाढ़ी खींच देते, कभी उनके कमंडल का जल उलट देते, तो कभी उनके वल्कल (पेड़ों की छाल के वस्त्र) पेड़ों पर टांग देते।
एक बार हनुमान जी ने एक परम तपस्वी ऋषि के आश्रम में बहुत अधिक उत्पात मचाया। उन्होंने ऋषि के यज्ञ की वेदी को भंग कर दिया और उनके पवित्र कुश-आसन को आकाश में उड़ा दिया।
ऋषि ने देखा कि यह बालक अपनी शक्तियों का सही उपयोग नहीं समझ पा रहा है। उन्हें आभास हुआ कि यदि हनुमान अपनी शक्तियों को इसी तरह अनियंत्रित रखेंगे, तो संसार में व्यवस्था बनाए रखना कठिन हो जाएगा। साथ ही, हनुमान जी का असली उद्देश्य प्रभु श्री राम की सेवा करना था, जिसके लिए उनमें विनम्रता और धैर्य का होना अनिवार्य था।
तब उन तेजस्वी ऋषि ने हनुमान जी को एक 'हितकारी श्राप' दिया:
श्राप मिलते ही हनुमान जी एक साधारण वानर बालक की तरह शांत हो गए। उनके भीतर का सारा कोलाहल थम गया। उन्हें याद ही नहीं रहा कि वह सूर्य को निगल सकते हैं या समुद्र लांघ सकते हैं।
यही कारण था कि जब रावण माता सीता का हरण करके ले गया, तब भी हनुमान जी चुपचाप ऋष्यमूक पर्वत पर सुग्रीव के साथ बैठे रहे। उन्हें नहीं पता था कि वह अकेले ही पूरी लंका को भस्म करने का सामर्थ्य रखते हैं।
"कवन सो काज कठिन जग माहीं, जो नहीं होइ तात तुम्ह पाहीं।"
(हे तात! संसार में ऐसा कौन सा कठिन कार्य है जो आप नहीं कर सकते?)
जैसे ही जामवंत जी ने हनुमान जी को उनके बचपन की कहानियाँ सुनाईं और उनके 'पवनपुत्र' होने की याद दिलाई, ऋषि का श्राप समाप्त हो गया। हनुमान जी का शरीर पर्वत जैसा विशाल होने लगा, उनकी आँखों में तेज आ गया और उन्होंने गर्जना करते हुए समुद्र लांघने की तैयारी की।
यह श्राप वास्तव में एक वरदान साबित हुआ, क्योंकि इसने हनुमान जी को अहंकार से मुक्त कर दिया और उन्हें 'परम भक्त' बनने के योग्य बनाया।

The childhood story of Lord Hanuman is as exciting as it is instructive. This story teaches us that immense power and restlessness can sometimes lead to trouble.
Hanuman often wandered into sages’ ashrams, where the sages were peacefully engaged in yajnas (sacrificial rituals) and meditation. The little Hanuman would sometimes pull the sages’ beards, overturn their water pots, or hang their bark garments (valkal) on trees, using his powers for mischief.
Once, Hanuman created enormous chaos in the ashram of a highly austere sage. He destroyed the yajna altar and sent the sacred kusa-mat (sitting mat) flying into the sky.
The sage realized that the child did not understand how to use his powers properly. He foresaw that if Hanuman continued to act in this uncontrolled manner, maintaining order in the world would become difficult. Moreover, Hanuman’s true purpose was to serve Lord Shri Ram, for which humility and patience were essential.
So, the enlightened sage gave Hanuman a “beneficial curse”:
As soon as the curse was pronounced, Hanuman became calm like an ordinary monkey child. All the chaos within him ceased. He forgot that he could swallow the sun or leap across the ocean.
This is why, when Ravana abducted Mother Sita, Hanuman quietly sat on Rishyamukha Hill with Sugriva, unaware that he alone had the power to burn all of Lanka.
"O son! What task in this world is so difficult that you cannot accomplish it?"
As Jamvant reminded Hanuman of his childhood feats and his identity as the Pavanputra (son of the wind god), the sage’s curse was lifted. Hanuman’s body grew as enormous as a mountain, a fiery energy appeared in his eyes, and he roared in preparation to leap across the ocean.
This curse turned out to be a blessing, as it freed Hanuman from arrogance and made him worthy of becoming the supreme devotee.
