Pitra Paksha, the fortnight dedicated to honoring ancestors, is a significant period in Hindu tradition. It is believed that during this time, our ancestors visit the earth, and performing certain rituals can bring their blessings and peace. Several remedies are suggested to appease ancestors and gain their favor. These include offering tarpan (water and sesame seeds) daily, especially on the Amavasya (new moon) day, which is considered most auspicious. Feeding Brahmins and the needy, particularly during the Pitra Paksha period, is also highly recommended. Preparing and offering food that was dear to the ancestors is a meaningful way to connect with them. Lighting a lamp daily in the south direction, considered the direction of Yama, the god of death, is believed to bring peace to the departed souls. Reciting specific mantras and performing Shraddha rituals with sincerity and devotion are thought to remove ancestral curses and bring prosperity to the family. Observing a simple lifestyle, avoiding auspicious ceremonies, and maintaining a peaceful environment during Pitra Paksha is also considered important.
