हैं। कुछ का मत है कि यह पहाड़ी बकरा है और कुछ के अनुसार यह समुद्री बकरा है। समुद्री बकरे की धारणा रखने वाले आचार्यों के अनसार इसका सिर तो बकरे का है किंतु नीचे का हिस्सा धीरे-धीरे मछली के आकार की तरह होता जाता है। कुछ और धारणाओं के अनुसार मकर राशि का स्वरूप एक समुद्री मानव का है जिसके शरीर के नीचे का भाग मगरमच्छ से मिलता-जुलता है। यह भी कहा जाता है कि यह समुद्री मानव वरुण देवता की सवारी है यानी यह वरुण देवता का वाहन है। वरुण देवता पानी से संबंधित चीजों के देवता समझे जाते हैं और साथ ही गंगा की देवी के कारक भी माने जाते हैं। लेकिन एक और ग्रंथ 'चतुर्वर्ग चिंतामणि' में कहा गया है कि मकर राशि का स्वरूप वास्तव में ऐसे व्यक्ति का है जिसका सिर्फ धड़ से ऊपर का हिस्सा एक हिरण का है और उसका शरीर गहरे हरे रंग जैसा है। उसने एक हाथ में माला पकड़ी हुई है तथा दूसरे हाथ में एक खाली बर्तन पकड़ा हुआ है। मेरे अपने विचार में 'चतुर्वर्ग चिंतामणि' का यह वर्णन कि इसका ऊपर का धड़ हिरण का है-यह ज्यादा अर्थपूर्ण लगता है क्योंकि एक बकरे में चीजों को देखने-पहचानने की या अपने परिवेश में पूरी तरह सावधान रहने की वो शक्ति नहीं होती जो एक हिरण की आंखों में होती है। हिरण अपने चारों तरफ देखते हुए ध्यान से चलता है और वह अपने से दूर तक दृष्टि डालकर चीजों की बारीकी को समझता है और अपने को किसी भी खतरे से बचाने के लिए वह हमेशा ही पूर्ण रूप से तैयार रहता है। जिन ज्योतिष आचार्यों ने इसके ऊपर के धड़ को बकरे का धड़ कहा है उनकी विचारधारा भी कुछ सीमित हद तक ठीक प्रतीत होती है क्योंकि जैसा कि मैंने ऊपर जिक्र किया है कि मकर लग्न में अपनी जिम्मेदारी को निभाना और दूसरों के काम आने की वृत्ति इतनी ज्यादा होती है कि वह कई दफा अपने जीवन का बहुत सुनहरी समय अपने आपको दूसरों के लिए कुर्बान करने में ही बिता देता है। यानी परिवार पत्नी बच्चों व मां-बाप आदि के लिए। इसीलिए मकर लग्न को कई बार 'कुर्बानी का बकरा' भी कहा जाता है। लेकिन वह लोग जो किसी देवता से अपनी इच्छा की पूर्ति के लिए बकरे की कुर्बानी देते हैं-वह इस बात पर ध्यान नहीं देते कि वह बकरे की कुर्बानी दे रहे हैं तो उस बकरे का भी ध्यान रखा जाए या उसके अहसान का भी ध्यान रखा जाए। इसीलिए मकर लग्न के व्यक्ति जिन लोगों के लिए कुर्बानी देते हैं, उनसे किसी प्रकार की
