तुला का अर्थ तराजू है; लेकिन यहां तुला के बारीक अर्थ को समझना बहुत आवश्यक है। भार से लदे हुए भारी ट्रकों के सामान को तोलने के लिए भी धर्मकांटा (तराजू) होता है, और तराजू से कोयले की दुकानों पर कोयले भी तोले जाते हैं तथा फल-सब्जी वालों के पास भी फल तथा सब्जी इसी तराजू से तोली जाती है। वास्तव में, भारत के सर्वश्रेष्ठ ज्योतिषी के संदर्भ में तुला का अर्थ इस प्रकार के तराजुओं से नहीं है। तुला वह तराजू है
