देवीदास वर्मा मेरे घनिष्ठ मित्र तो नहीं हैं, मगर कुछ सालों से मैं उनसे परिचित हूं। उस दिन उनके मोहल्ले से गुजरते हुए मुझे ध्यान आया कि वर्माजी का दर्शन करते चलें। उनके ड्राईंग रूम में उनकी पत्नी मुझे ले गई, किंतु वर्माजी किसी दूसरे कमरे में बैठे काम में लगे हुए थे। वे एक मिनट के लिए ड्राईंग रूम में आए और मुझको नमस्कार करने के बाद कहने लगे–“अभी मैं थोड़ा व्यस्त हूं, मगर आप बैठो, बातें करो, पत्नी हंसकर कहने लगी- “हम लोग चार दिन शिमला और मनाली घूमने के लिए जा रहे हैं। इसके लिए वर्माजी ने एक महीना पहले ही प्रोग्राम बना लिया था। पहले कुछ दिन तो उन्होंने बसों के आरक्षण (बुकिंग) और शिमला से मनाली कौन-कौन-सी बसें जाती हैं, इन सबके बारे में जानकारी हासिल की। फिर शिमला के लिए दो दिन पहले बस की रिजर्वेशन भी करवा ली है और पिछले हफ़्तों, इन्होंने शिमला अपने मित्र को पत्र में लिख दिया था कि शिमला से मनाली के लिए भी बस की टिकटें पहले से लेकर रख लें। इन्होंने समय भी बताया था कि वह पच्चीस तारीख को साढ़े ग्यारह बजे शिमला से मनाली के लिए चलेंगे और ठीक इसी तरह से यदि रिजर्वेशन का इंतजाम किया जाए तो ठीक रहेगा।” मैं अपने मन में थोड़ा-सा हैरान हुआ कि आख़िर ये लोग चार दिन के लिए बाहर जा रहे हैं तो बसें तो हर जगह मिल सकती हैं। लेकिन तब मुझे वर्माजी की कुछ पुरानी बातें याद करके ध्यान आया कि ये अपनी किसी भी काम के लिए योजना-बद्ध काम करने की आदत को कभी नहीं भूलते। मुझे वर्माजी का सारा वाकया कुछ अजीब-सा लगा, तो मैंने उनकी पत्नी से कहा- "वर्माजी हर काम बहुत ही अच्छे ढंग से करते हैं और हर काम लिखकर करते हैं, ताकि कहीं भूलने की गुंजाइश न रहे।" तब उन्होंने बताया- “इन्हें बहुत सालों से हर चीज़ के बारे में, जब भी आप पूछना चाहें दो मिनट में बता सकते हैं। जैसे हमारे घर के खर्च के बारे में ये
